Explore Prathong Island on the ‘Tak’ Truck

Hearing the word savanna, an image of mellow golden African grassland is most likely to pop up in one’s mind. But today, we will take our readers to Thailand’s very own savanna on Prathong Island, not far from Phuket.

From Bangdad Pier in A. Kuraburi, Phang-Nga Province, it takes just 40 minutes via long-tail boat to reach Paehyoi Pier on Pratong Island. “Go Noon”, our driver/ guide was waiting by his truck, eager and ready to take us on a tour of the island.

We hopped on the vehicle and rode along the narrow concrete road. After we put away the luggage in our homestay accommodation called “Sammao”, the host had just finished preparing a simple but quite tasty lunch for us.

 After a great meal, we hopped back on the truck which took us along a white sandy road. Soon, we reached Thung Samed Kraeh, an open field covered with small white flowers called the Staghorn Club Moss.

Go Noon, the guide, took us a bit further to see the Drosera, a type of insect eating plant that were basking in the sunlight. Next we saw the Dischidia Major, a type of herb that look like greenish-yellow lamps. These grow in bunches on the Staghorn Club Mosses and was very interesting to see.

The next stop was Koh Prathong’s highlight, the famous savanna of Thailand. As sunlight hits the vast field, everything turns a shimmering gold color. This beautiful spot is a part of the Unseen Thailand project, a collection of all the rare places throughout Thailand.

When the wind blows, the golden stalks would sway to the rhythm back and forth. And on a sunny day like this, the clear blue sky set as backdrop made everything even more soothing and joyful.

As the day progressed, we headed to Sood Kob Fah Beach, reputedly the best spot to see the sunset on Koh Prathong. An alternative spot to be is at Poh Tah Hin Gong View Point.

The round, blazing sun began to descend further and its color turned bright orange. Even after it has gone, the romantic trail of light still lingered behind. The brief moment was so amazing that we could not even take our eyes away for a second.

One whole day passed by too quickly, but we will certainly be back for a second and third visit very soon.
