Hida Furukawa: A Charming Town Between Toyama and Takayama
Hida Furukawa is a small town nestled between Toyama and Takayama. We decided to stop by for a stroll, and were immediately captivated by its charm. The town's highlight is the release of colorful koi fish into a small canal in the heart of the city. These vibrant fish are contained within a designated area, allowing visitors to leisurely admire their beauty.
Our journey began in the city of Toyama.
We visited Toyama Castle in the morning and arrived at Toyama Station at 10:00 AM. We checked the train schedule on Hyperdia and found a train leaving at 10:32 AM, but we had to transfer to another train.
We asked the station staff and found out that we could transfer to the smaller train at the same station (the next train was at 13:02 PM, so we had to wait a long time).
The journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Take your time to enjoy the scenery along the way.
Arriving at Hidafurukawa Station around 12:10 PM, we couldn't find a locker to store our luggage. We went to the Hida City Tourist Information to inquire.
As soon as you exit the gate, turn right and walk a short distance to find the Hida City Tourist Information Center. We left our bags and asked the staff for a city map.
Let's take a look at the city map first. It seems like it will take a long time to walk.
From the map, we plan to walk straight from the train station until we reach a three-way intersection. Turn right and you will find a four-way intersection. Then turn left to go to Enkoji Temple.
From the temple, walk to the Koi Canal (Canal Area) to walk along the canal to Festival Hall and then walk back to Takumikan Craft Museum.
Walk through Old Town and turn right to Shinshuji Temple, which is located at the red bridge. Walk to explore the Miyugawa River.
Walk towards Honkoji Temple and then to the Canal Area. Follow the Koi Canal until you reach Enkoji Temple and then walk straight back to the train station.
We have the route, let's start walking. I see a rice shop on the right corner of the street. Let's check the menu in front of the shop first. It's noon, so we can find something to eat before we continue.
The food at this restaurant looks so delicious, we decided to go in and eat right away.
We continued our exploration under the alternating sun and clouds, seeking shade and taking photos along the way.
We walked to the three-way intersection, turned right, then turned left. We saw a fruit shop and our friends stopped by to take a look.
I walked ahead of them. This picture was taken on the way back.)
My friends stopped by and brought me some strawberries to try. They were so sweet and delicious! On my way back, I'm going to buy some more. (450 yen per pack)
Arriving at Enkoji Temple, let's take a picture of the entrance first.
Let's go inside the temple and take some pictures.
Next to the bell, there is a cherry blossom tree with some remaining flowers. My boyfriend took a picture of it. It looks beautiful up close.
Across from the temple is a small flower shop, beautifully decorated.
Just a short walk from the flower shop, you'll find the Canal Area, home to a vibrant koi fish market.
Let's go take pictures of the fish on the wall of Enkoji Temple first.
Walking along the temple wall, watching the koi fish.
We reached the intersection. There are a lot of koi fish here.
Walk straight to Festival Hall
Take a photo at the Matsuri Festival Square first.

The Hida Crafts Culture Museum is located across the street.
After exiting from the back of the Hida Crafts Culture Museum, there is a shop selling sweets. You can go in and take a break.
Let's take a look at the sign. Where to next?
This shop is so inviting.
The tulips are so beautiful.
We just walked through the old town area. Turn right and walk straight to the red bridge. You can see it in the distance.
Taking pictures along the way
We have arrived at Shinshuji Temple.

Let's walk back to the fruit shop and buy some strawberries to eat. They're 450 yen a pack.
Other fruits look delicious too. I bought them back to eat at Takayama. Hehe (The size is compared to the 5 baht coin placed next to it.)
At the intersection, walk straight towards the station. There is also a cooperative store there. The prices are about the same.
I walked back to the train station at 3:10 PM. It took me exactly three hours.
Let's buy tickets at the coin machine to Takayama for 240 yen each.
It takes less than 20 minutes by train to reach Takayama. For those interested in tourist information, you can visit the Hida Takayama Tourist Information Office at the station exit.
Tonight we are staying at a Country-hotel. This evening we will go cycling around town and then go sightseeing together again.
Thank you for following me to the end.
