Phra Sukhothai Traimit
The most important feature of the temple is the Phra Sukhothai Trimitr, a golden Buddha statue that is the largest in the world and is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. The golden Buddha statue is 3.01 meters wide and 3.91 meters tall. The statue can be disassembled into 9 sections. From the base of the statue upwards, the gold content is 40%. The face of the statue is 80% gold, while the hair weighs 45 kilograms and is 99.99% pure gold.
It is believed that the statue was created during the Sukhothai period in the Mara-Vijaya posture. It is understood that it was originally enshrined at Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai province. Later, during the reign of King Rama I, the Department of the Royal Palace was ordered to invite the Buddha statue from the north to be enshrined in important temples. There were a large number of Buddha statues invited, making it difficult to take care of them all. A nobleman secretly covered the golden Buddha statue with plaster and brought it to the temple he built. It was then invited to Wat Phraya Krai (Wat Chotikaram). Later, the East Asiatic Company requested to rent the temple (which was then abandoned) as a sawmill. The statue was then invited to be placed next to the pagoda and a zinc shed was built as a roof to protect it roughly. After almost 20 years, when the new ubosot and wihan were completed, the statue was invited to be enshrined. However, during the relocation, the plaster covering the statue chipped off, revealing the golden statue inside on May 25, 1955.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as Kalawar Church, is a Roman Catholic church built in the Gothic style. It is located on Wanit 2 Alley, Talat Noi Subdistrict, Samphanthawong District, Bangkok.
This is not the first church on this site. It is the third church built to replace the original one, which was abandoned after a major fire in 1864. The current church was built by Father Desalles, a Frenchman, in 1891. Today, the church is 124 years old and is considered one of the oldest churches in the Rattanakosin period.
The church underwent a major renovation in 1957 during the time of Father Amestoy as rector, marking the 60th anniversary of the Kalawar Church. The most recent renovation took place between 1983 and 1989 under the leadership of Father Prawit Phongwirachchai. Currently, the Kalawar Church has been officially registered as an ancient monument by the Fine Arts Department.
