Vang Vieng Accommodation: A Review
Vang Vieng, a charming town in Laos, offers a plethora of accommodation options to suit diverse lifestyles. During my recent trip in September 2016, I had the opportunity to stay at a hotel in Vang Vieng, which I would like to review to assist fellow travelers in their decision-making process.
This review focuses on the hotel I stayed at on the second day of my trip.
The first night's accommodation is at The Mountain View Riverside Boutique Hotel.
The last night's accommodation is at The Elephant Crossing Hotel.

This hotel or resort is my top choice, and I believe everyone has seen pictures of rice fields, mountains, and thatched bungalow rooms with wooden walkways leading to small huts. I did too, and after setting a date and time with my friends, I booked the accommodation through agoda.com. The price of the accommodation was quite high at the time of booking. In a rush, I thought that this hotel was in high demand, so I booked it in advance. It was a non-refundable credit card booking. I booked a superior room with a large bed, garden view, and breakfast included for 2,878 per room/night, plus an extra bed for a total of 3 rooms for 7 people, which was 1,334 per person, which is not too expensive. My advice for booking through agoda is to keep checking the hotel you want. Sometimes they release special deals without having to book months in advance. My friends followed me later and booked 4 rooms at a special price with a rice field view for only 2,130, and the regular room like mine was only 1,800 baht.
Upon arrival at the resort, it was already dark as we had been engaged in activities throughout the day. The reason why we rarely see reviews of accommodations in Vang Vieng is partly because we have no opportunity to stay at the resort during the day due to our busy schedules. Some people purchase one-day tours, while others rent motorbikes to explore the area. By the time we return to the resort, it is already late in the evening. In the morning, we check out after a short stay. We were able to check in with the staff until late at night, as the staff were sleeping in front of the counter. After receiving the room keys, we went our separate ways to our respective rooms.
A tranquil scene unfolds as night descends upon the wooden walkway and balcony outside the superior garden-view room.
The interior of the room is decorated with wooden panels, both on the walls and floors, as well as the furniture. The cream-colored walls and tiled floors soften the overall wooden aesthetic. The doors and walls in front of the bathroom resemble those of an ancient Thai house, while the dressing table is designed simply like a shelf, creating a harmonious atmosphere. The room is fully equipped with amenities and has a balcony overlooking a lotus pond.
After exploring my own room, I took a walk to explore my friend's villa, which had a beautiful view of the rice fields. As I walked along the path through the rice fields at dusk, the scenery was truly breathtaking. The full moon shone brightly in the sky, and lights lined the wooden bridge that stretched out to the villa on the edge of the rice fields. Occasionally, I saw flickering lights in the rice fields as villagers went out to catch frogs, toads, and fish at night. The villa had two floors. The upper floor was the bedroom, decorated like a superior room but slightly larger. The lower floor had hammocks for relaxing or enjoying local beer while admiring the view from the balcony overlooking the rice fields. It was a truly delightful experience.
...I woke up early in the morning and washed my face and eyes. I prepared my camera equipment to capture the morning light. After exploring the area around my accommodation the previous night, I found out that there was another zone by the river. This area was on the east side, so I decided to take some pictures of the morning atmosphere by the Song River. The rooms on this side were villas with a view of the river. I think this side of the resort is not often seen on social media. The morning view in this area is just as beautiful as the rice fields. Although we couldn't see the sun rising above the horizon because it was blocked by buildings and mountains, it was still a beautiful sight. It was a pity that the sky was rather cloudy in the morning because it had been raining lightly all night. On the right side was the wooden bridge that we used to cross back and forth. On the left side, I could see new hotels being built, competing for good locations along the Song River. This is normal for popular tourist destinations. Soon, it will probably be like our home...
Next, we headed to the popular meadow view area. The unobstructed view allowed us to capture stunning photos from any angle. According to Feng Shui principles, this location boasts excellent energy, with mountains in the back and water in the front, creating a harmonious balance of yin and yang. The breathtaking scenery left us speechless for a moment. As it was early morning, there were few other guests around, giving our group the perfect opportunity to take photos without interruption. As the sun rose, the beauty of the scene intensified, with mist gently rolling over the mountain peaks.
Let's take a look at the breakfast prepared by the resort. Instead of a buffet, the resort offers a set breakfast menu with options such as rice porridge, fried egg, or American breakfast. The sets are served with delicious tea and coffee, especially the Lao coffee, which is strong and flavorful.
Overall Impression of Vieng Tara Villa
In my opinion, Vieng Tara Villa offers good value for the price, considering the rooms, scenic views, food, and service. The only regret is that I didn't have enough time to fully enjoy the resort's atmosphere. If you plan to stay here, I recommend making it the last stop on your trip so you can relax and unwind. Due to the tour schedule, you'll likely return late in the evening after your activities.
Pros:
- Good value for the price
- Beautiful rooms and scenic views
- Delicious food
- Friendly and helpful service
Cons:
- No Wi-Fi in the rooms, only at the check-in counter
- No luggage storage room, despite being advertised on the website. Our luggage was placed in a corner of the lobby near the walkway, which felt risky and prone to theft, even though it was close to the check-in counter.
- The extra bed I slept on broke in the middle of the night, requiring me to fix it before continuing my sleep.
Overall Satisfaction:
Considering all aspects, I would rate my experience at Vieng Tara Villa 8 out of 10, taking into account the hotel's level and the price of accommodation.
