Free Train Travel: Ubon Ratchathani - Bangkok - Chiang Mai - Doi Inthanon - Ayutthaya

This sentence advertises a free train journey through several popular destinations in Thailand, including Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon, and Ayutthaya.

Duration: 6 days and 6 nights (November 24-29, 2014)

This trip started when I saw a review post about a free train trip to Doi Inthanon. I posted the link on Facebook to find people to join me, but I didn't expect anyone to be interested. However, my friends were very enthusiastic about it. In the end, four of us went on the trip together. (It was a good time to go because the first-year students were taking their final exams and there were no classes for the other years.)

Day 1: Embark on a 12-hour journey from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok!

We arrived in Bangkok around 9:30 PM and looked for a place to stay near the train station so we could catch the free train to Chiang Mai the next day. We found a room at The Train Guesthouse near Hua Lamphong Railway Station. The room was actually for three people, but we asked to stay with four people and added an extra bed. The room cost 450 baht and the extra bed cost 150 baht (air-conditioned room).

The next day, the journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai took only 16 hours!

Day 3, arrived in Chiang Mai around 4 am. Then, I went to find a motorbike rental shop to travel to Doi Inthanon.

For motorbike rentals, I highly recommend Bikky due to their exceptional service.

The motorbike rental fee is 200 baht per day, so for 2 days it's 400 baht. We each filled up with 100 baht of gas, so it cost 300 baht per person.

Riding a motorbike to Doi Inthanon is not recommended. 555

The ascent to Doi Lam is extremely challenging due to its steepness. In some sections, only first gear can provide sufficient power for vehicles to climb.

The journey begins with a motorbike ride from Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon, covering a distance of approximately 100 kilometers.

We stopped by Mae Ya Waterfall first, which is about 13 kilometers away. It was definitely worth the trip, the waterfall was stunning!

Then drive up the mountain to the Kiw Mae Pan viewpoint.

We arrived at the summit of Doi Inthanon around three in the afternoon, where the temperature was a cool 15 degrees Celsius.

We then took a 30-minute walk along the Ang Ka Nature Study Trail.

After that, we descended from the mountain to the Doi Inthanon National Park headquarters to rent a tent to sleep in the park.

The tent costs 225 baht per night and can accommodate 3 people. However, we ended up sleeping 4 people in it. We also rented sleeping bags for 30 baht each.

We spent one night at the park. It was very cold at night and in the morning. We wanted to wake up to watch the sunrise, but it was too cold, so we couldn't.

Four days later, we drove about 10 kilometers from the park headquarters up the mountain to see the Kew Mae Pan Nature Study Trail.

The guide fee is 200 baht per group, with a maximum of 10 people per group.

From here, we will present a series of images from the nature study trail at Kew Mae Pan.

Panoramic view. ^^

Sirithan Waterfall, Doi Inthanon National Park, stop by on the way back.

The strawberries on the mountain are very delicious. ^^

After that, I traveled to Chiang Mai city and stayed there for one night to wait for the free train back to Ayutthaya.

The buffet at Kabuki Grill on Nimmanhaemin Road is very affordable at only 120 baht per person.

Today, we are staying at the Supanich Guesthouse in Chiang Mai. The room rate is 250 baht per night (fan room) and it is located near the Chiang Mai Railway Station.

On the 5th, I woke up early to catch the free train from Chiang Mai to Ayutthaya.

Five baht ice cream cups at Pachi Junction Station.

Arrive in Ayutthaya around 7 pm and stay overnight.

We stayed at the สายฝน Guesthouse, which cost 350 baht per room. We slept four people in one room, which was a great way to save money. (The room had air conditioning.)

Waiting for the free train back in the evening of the next day.

On the morning of the 6th, I rented a bicycle for 30 baht and cycled to the Ayutthaya Floating Market.

Translation:

Then cycle to Wat Yai Chaimongkol.

Then cycle to Wat Phra Si Sanphet.

The total cycling distance was approximately 16 kilometers. I'm exhausted! 555

It's time to go home! Leaving Ayutthaya around 5:30 PM and arriving in Ubon Ratchathani around 4:00 AM.

Summary of Expenses in 6 Days

  • Food cost 1,034.-
  • Travel expenses: 470 THB.
  • Accommodation fee 449.-
  • Other fees 270.-
