A journey through the serene northern province of Thailand, Nan, where the name evokes the beauty of nature, unique temples, and rich culture. Often referred to as the twin city of Luang Prabang, Nan offers a captivating experience that should not be missed.
The weariness of the journey fades away when greeted by such a breathtaking atmosphere, wouldn't you agree?
My four-day journey took me through breathtaking natural landscapes and immersed me in the rich cultural heritage of local communities. This charming town, with its well-preserved traditions, continues to captivate visitors with its slow-paced lifestyle. My adventure began with an eight-hour drive from Bangkok to the province of Nan.
It is often said that life is a journey, but ultimately, what matters is what we learn from our experiences, whether they are happy or sad, fun or tiring. Many people have attempted to define the essence of travel.
This trip was filled with countless stories for me.
...from the once lush forest...to barren mountains as far as the eye can see.
From the bustling capital city...to the tranquility of a small town...to embrace a slower pace of life and embark on a journey of self-discovery.
This city offers many things, but one thing that every visitor is sure to take away is happiness.

Travel Plan
This trip begins in Bangkok and continues to Nan Province, then to Bo Kluea District, then to Pua District, and finally back to Mueang District, Nan Province.
Episode 1: A Long Journey Filled with Stories
I embarked on a long journey from Bangkok early in the morning, traveling for eight hours to Nan Province. I arrived in Mueang District, Nan Province, around 4:30 PM. The weather in Nan on the day of my arrival was rather cloudy and gloomy, with occasional light rain. However, the air was cool and comfortable, not too hot. On the first day of my arrival, I took a walk around the city. As the city is not very large, I was able to explore it on foot comfortably.
The evening view of Nan city in this atmosphere is another impressive angle. The sunlight that shines on this city gradually disappears, turning into light from the lamps that illuminate buildings, houses, and temples. Amidst the cool air, these things become a relaxation from a hard day's journey.
Episode 2: Exploring the Land of Dreams - In Search of World-Famous Love Images
The serene morning atmosphere in Nan. Locals offering alms to monks, the sound of temple bells ringing nearby, and the rooster's crowing serve as a natural alarm clock. "Wake up! You still have a long journey ahead today," it seems to say. If these elements had a voice, they would surely wake me up with such a call.
Within Nan city, there are numerous attractions, including temples, monasteries, and historical sites.
Navigating Nan's city center is relatively straightforward. If physically able, one can comfortably explore the area on foot. Despite its compact size, Nan's city center boasts a diverse range of attractions scattered throughout.
The first place I visited was a landmark that everyone who knows Nan province must know. It is a world-famous image, Wat Phumin. The unique and unparalleled beauty of Wat Phumin is that it is the only one in Thailand. It is a four-sided ordination hall. No matter which direction you walk up the stairs, you will see the face of the Buddha statue on all sides. Inside the ordination hall, there are beautiful murals, namely the murals of Pu Man and Ya Man (the world-famous whispering love).
There are many opportunities
to meet someone we "love"
but there may not be many opportunities
to meet someone who "loves us"
Being single, I have no choice but to continue walking alone. Not far from where I crossed the road, I came across the royal temple of Nan province.
The main temple of Wat Chang Kham Worawihan is a large structure built in the northern architectural style. The interior is spacious and features a pair of lions flanking the stairs on either side. The temple also houses the Chedi Chang Kham, a Sukhothai-era stupa surrounded by half-bodied stucco elephant sculptures.
Riding a motorcycle for sightseeing is another way to relax.
Just a short walk across the street, you will find the Nan National Museum, a perfect place to learn about the history of Nan. Within the museum grounds, there is a long row of frangipani trees that grow alongside the building, forming a magnificent tree tunnel. Tourists visiting Nan often come here to take pictures, as it is considered a symbol of the city.
The building is a magnificent structure, constructed with strong bricks and mortar. The exterior is adorned with intricate lace-like patterns, creating a delicate and elegant aesthetic. The front of the museum houses a monument to Chao Suriya Phong Phirit Dech, the owner of Ho Kham.
I've fallen in love with this city.
From the Nan National Museum, we can see Wat Hua Khuang standing prominently on the left side of the museum building. Wat Hua Khuang exhibits distinctive Lanna-style local art.
A short drive from Nan city center, we arrived at the Nan Identity Hall. This place narrates the history of Nan in detail, making it a must-visit destination.
The Nan Provincial Museum: A Journey Through History and Culture
This museum offers a captivating journey through the history and culture of Nan Province. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing the city's evolution from its early days to its present-day status as a vibrant cultural hub.
The museum features a video room dedicated to Nan, showcasing its rich heritage and natural beauty. Other exhibits delve into the fascinating relationships between Nan and neighboring regions, including Chiang Rai, Phrae, and Phayao. Visitors can also learn about the diverse ethnic groups that call Nan home, including the Mhong, Mien, Khon Muang, and Tai Lue.
The museum also explores Nan's unique architecture, natural heritage, and various national parks. A dedicated souvenir shop allows visitors to take home a piece of Nan's charm.
Through its innovative use of technology, the Nan Provincial Museum brings history and culture to life, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to understand the essence of this remarkable province.
Returning to the city once again, this time we refueled with desserts at Auntie Nim's dessert shop. Nan is another city that can be called a paradise for food lovers.
Aun Nim's dessert shop offers a wide variety of sweet treats, with the most famous being their **bua loy**. The name of the dessert even brings to mind a popular song: "Bua loy, my fickle friend, why did you leave me so soon? Where did you go? Do you even know?" But wait, that's a different bua loy!
I then traveled to Wat Phra Borommathat Chae Haeng, where the Luang Wihan and the Chedi of Wat Phra Borommathat Chae Haeng are located. The Chedi of Wat Phra Borommathat Chae Haeng is a dazzling yellow color, as it is covered with brass sheets. The chedi is bell-shaped.
The journey to Bo Kluea district is mainly uphill. However, the newly constructed and widened road makes for a comfortable drive. The surrounding landscape features barren mountains with cornfields stretching as far as the eye can see.
After a two-hour journey, I arrived at Bo Kluea District. Nestled amidst picturesque mountains, Bo Kluea boasts two salt mountains that preserve the ancient tradition of salt boiling.
Traveling may reveal that the beauty of a destination does not always lie in the final stop. Of course, in every journey, including the journey of life, having a destination is like having a dream that inspires us to embark on the path. The surroundings encountered along the way are different, but ultimately, the valuable takeaways from a journey may not only be the arrival at a specific location but also the experiences gained during the process.
Dinner tonight at the restaurant in Bor Klua View Resort with a view of the Maeng River below was a feast for both the body and soul.
Episode 3: An Unforgettable Impression
Today, I woke up early and rushed to Pua District. This time, I took the route through Doi Phu Kha National Park. During the journey, the fog covered the area, making the atmosphere cool and comfortable even though it is not yet winter. It was the first day of my trip to Nan Province, and the sun came out after two days of absence.
I arrived in Pua in the late morning. Pua is a district in Nan province, about a two-hour drive away. The road through the park has many sharp curves, making for a somewhat thrilling journey. For those who enjoy a bit of excitement, this route is highly recommended.
To get what you want, you often have to make some sacrifices. The same goes for beautiful views.
Within Amphoe Pua, there are many tourist attractions. The first place I visited was Wat Phukiet. Wait! Why is a temple named Wat Phukiet located in Nan? In fact, Wat Phukiet is named after a village called Ban Get. The temple is located on a hill, hence the name "Wat Phukiet".
The reason I came here is because it has the most beautiful viewpoint in Pua District. The viewing balcony behind the temple is adjacent to a vast rice field with the Doi Phu Kha National Park mountains as a backdrop, creating a breathtaking and unforgettable scene.
Nestled amidst serene surroundings, Farm Mushroom House Restaurant offers a tranquil ambiance perfect for relaxation. The culinary delights here are crafted using a variety of mushrooms, ensuring a delectable experience with every bite.
Affordable food with million-dollar views
From Wat Phra That Khao Noi, which offers panoramic views of Nan city, I continued my journey to Wat Khao Noi. The journey from Pua district takes approximately one hour. Currently, the scenic viewpoint features the Phra Buddha Maha Udom Mongkol Nanaburi Si Nan statue.
Wow! This sound echoed in my head with the beautiful scene before me on a clear day with a vast view.
As the sun sets, I find myself at the bustling night market near Wat Phumin. Here, a vibrant array of food, souvenirs, and local crafts awaits eager customers. The open space in front of the temple is filled with people enjoying live music and delicious meals. In moments like these, I realize that life's simple pleasures are often the most fulfilling.
How long, how long
Before traveling far to meet
A city with a misty haze and drizzle
Remember the distant path through the forest
Across the mountains, across the sky to meet
Oh, swallow, you know
So you fly from where
To find a place to rest your heart
So far away, not discouraged
How many people have come
Knowing that there is this city
Beautiful and just right
To come and rest
Nan, Nan
No matter how many times I come, I want to stay for a long time
Despite being a small city, Nan boasts a rich tapestry of arts and culture. Its friendly and welcoming residents embrace a laid-back lifestyle, fostering a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. Nan undoubtedly merits a return visit for those seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
