From January 15-17, 2017, I had the opportunity to visit Chiang Khan, a district in Loei Province. With the goal of visiting mountains and hills during the winter, my friends and I decided on Chiang Khan, Loei Province, located in the northeastern region of Thailand, or upper Isan. Therefore, the weather and culture will be a mix of northern Isan and Laos, making Chiang Khan a good choice for those who want to experience cold weather without going to the north.
Now, let's take a look at the journey.
There are many ways to get to Loei.
- Private car
- Air-conditioned bus
- Airplane
For this trip, we chose to fly. We booked our flights less than a month in advance through the Traveloka website, which was easy and convenient.
We flew Airasia on the way there and Nok Air on the way back, with an average round-trip fare of 1,700 baht. Not too cheap, not too expensive.
For this trip, there were three of us, one male and two females, so we chose two rooms and booked our accommodation through Agoda.
We booked Fair Fair Resort at 700 baht per night with hot water and a private bathroom.
https://www.facebook.com/fairfairresortatchiangkhan/ You can check out the resort's Facebook page.
The resort is located on the main road from Loei to Chiang Khan, about 1 km from Chiang Khan town.
But it is close to the Nakhonchai Air bus terminal.
Let's start our trip.
Day 1
We left Don Mueang Airport around 10 am and arrived around 11 am.
Then, as we walked out of Loei Airport, there was a booth at the exit with car rentals, Skylabs (three-wheeled vehicles), taxis, and Air Asia vans to Chiang Khan.
Let me break down the travel options here:
- Car rentals start at 800 baht. If you want to rent a car, you should prepare a deposit in advance.
- Skylabs are three-wheeled vehicles that take you to the bus terminal in Loei, which will cost 100 baht, and then the bus fare from the bus terminal to Chiang Khan is another 34 baht.
- The Loei-Chiang Khan bus costs 35 baht and is like a larger Skylab. It takes a little longer because it makes frequent stops to pick up passengers.
- Taxis have a fixed price starting at 600 baht, negotiable.
- Air Asia vans cost 250 baht per trip and can drop you off at your accommodation.
We chose to go by van for 250 baht. It took a little over an hour to reach our accommodation. After settling in, we asked the resort staff how to get to town. They suggested calling a Skylab, which would cost 20 baht per person. We agreed and called ourselves. For the next three days, we used the services of Skylab driver, Brother Kao, who was very friendly and accommodating.
Upon arriving in Chiang Khan, the weather was cool and breezy, but the sun was hot. We decided to find a restaurant for lunch, as nothing was open yet. The walking street market typically opens around 6 pm. We arrived at 1 pm and had lunch at Liaw Lae Restaurant, which was recommended by our accommodation host. The food was delicious and flavorful, especially the catfish tom yum.
After finishing your meal, the accommodation recommends visiting Baan Supichanya coffee shop, which is located by the Mekong River.
The lonely dog is sleeping.
After finishing eating around 4 pm, I started looking for something to do. I went to pray at a temple nearby.

This is a coffee shop and a guesthouse. The defendant loves it.

Accommodation on Walking Street
After finishing, I went for a walk along the Mekong River to watch the sunset.
The scenery is breathtaking. You must see it for yourself. The atmosphere is cool, with a beautiful river and sky. As we walked, it started to get dark. Let's take a look at the atmosphere of the night market. On Sundays, there are quite a few people, but not too crowded.

We had dinner at Sup Juckraporn Restaurant in Chiang Khan.

The Emperor's Soup tastes like a light version of "Ploh" (a Thai stew), and there is a wide variety of dim sum to choose from.
After a satisfying meal, we went to find a place to drink beer. We came across the "Mae Nam Mee Kaeng" restaurant, which also serves as a guesthouse. It's located around Soi 17. I didn't take any pictures of the restaurant, only of the beer. 5555
The image depicts a group of people gathered around a table, engaged in a lively discussion. The table is covered with papers and books, suggesting that they are working on a project or task together. The people appear to be from diverse backgrounds, with different ages and ethnicities represented. The overall atmosphere is one of collaboration and intellectual engagement.
The image depicts a young woman with long, flowing hair, wearing a white dress and standing in a field of sunflowers. The sunflowers are in full bloom, and the woman is smiling brightly. The image is likely from a professional photoshoot, as the lighting and composition are well-done. The woman's pose and expression convey a sense of joy and happiness.
We took a boat ride until 9 pm and then called our friend Kao to pick us up because we had to wake up early the next morning to go to Phu Tok.
(I must say that I didn't prepare for the cold weather. On the way back, the wind was very cold, around 19 degrees Celsius. Our lips were trembling while we were on the Skylab. If you are returning late, please bring a jacket.)
Day 2
We woke up at 5 am and called our friend Kao to pick us up at 6 am.
(For the Skylab to Phu Tok, the usual price is 100 baht per person for a round trip. When you arrive at Phu Tok, you will have to pay another 25 baht for a pickup truck ride to the top of the mountain.)
The sun was rising, and it was so beautiful.
Note: I am a large language model and do not have access to the internet. Therefore, I cannot translate text from other languages.
We were very lucky to see the fog, as some people who went did not see it. Some people saw a lot of fog and could not see the mountains. This trip was definitely worth it.

After breakfast, we called our driver, Mr. Kao, again. This time, we were heading to Wat Phra Bat Phu Khao Ngam and Kaeng Kut Ku in the morning.
Mr. Kao charged 200 baht per person, including Phu Tok (Most tours around Chiang Khan use skylabs, rental cars, and rental motorbikes).
On the way to Wat Phra Bat Phu Khao Ngam, which was about 17 km away, it was very cold. It was around 7 am at that time.
The temperature was around 18 degrees Celsius. There was fog and strong wind along the way. It's a good idea to bring a woolen hat because when the fog clears, it will turn into water and your head might get wet. 55555
The wind blows in your face throughout the journey.
Wat Phra Bat Phu Khao Ngon is about 15 minutes from Phu Tok.
It is a temple with a footprint of the Buddha. There is a turtle garden and a turtle pond. It is very shady. When I went, the fog was still thick. The weather was cool.
After visiting Wat Phra Bat Phu Khao Ngon, we headed to Kaeng Kut Ku.
To see the rapids at Kaeng Kut Ku, it's best to visit during the dry season (winter). During the rainy season (summer), the water level is high, making the rapids invisible.
Boat tours are available for 400 baht for 30 minutes and 800 baht for 1 hour.
After finishing whitewater rafting, we asked P' Kao to take us to Wat Phu Chang Noi, another temple located opposite our accommodation. P' Kao kindly agreed and took us there.
The climb was very steep, but the view from the top was worth it. We could see the whole of Chiang Khan.
After visiting Wat Phu Chang Noi, we returned to our accommodation and slept until the afternoon. We then went out for lunch, calling our driver, P' Kao, as before.
We ate at Heuan Fai Kham, which is a typical restaurant with reasonable prices.
We tried the Tam Tong Tang, which is a Lao-style papaya salad with glass noodles. It was like colorless cendol, which was interesting.
After lunch, we snuck away to a nearby hair salon to wash our hair because my hair was soaking wet this morning. 555555555
Meanwhile, two friends went to have coffee at With a good view, a cafe and guesthouse with a beautiful view. However, we couldn't sit there until sunset because it was already dark when we finished washing our hair. So we went for another walk around the walking street.
This is With a good view.

Strolling along the Mekong River, I stumbled upon a taproom. What else could I do but indulge? 5555
The image depicts a group of people gathered around a table, engaged in a lively discussion. The table is covered with papers and books, suggesting that they are working on a project or task together. The people are dressed in casual clothing, and the atmosphere appears to be relaxed and informal. The image is likely from a meeting or workshop, where people are collaborating on a shared goal.

The owner is from Bangkok. They also brew their own beer. Come and support them!
After chilling out for a while, enjoying the cool breeze and sipping beer by the Mekong River, I continued walking along the walking street. Today, there were very few people because it was Monday.
While walking, I came across a gallery showcasing photographs. The owner, a graduate of Rangsit University, had taken the photos. I sat and talked with them for a while, just sitting and observing things I had never seen before. It was a small pleasure in life.

We finished and returned to our accommodation. Day 2 is over.
Day 3
We woke up at 5 am again today to wait for the sticky rice alms offering, a traditional activity in Chiang Khan. If you come to Chiang Khan and don't do this, it's like you haven't been here.
A set costs 50 baht. We arrived and sat down, and the food was already prepared and waiting for us.
The monks walked by continuously from 5 am to around 7 am.
After offering alms, we took a morning stroll along the Mekong River while waiting for the restaurants to open around 7 am.

Grilled Mekong River prawns, salty and sweet, crispy and delicious.
We had breakfast at Mae Arun, where we enjoyed deep-fried dough sticks stuffed with sweet and savory fillings. If you're visiting Chiang Khan, be sure to try this local delicacy.

After a satisfying meal, we returned to our room for a nap before checking out. In the afternoon, we planned to go bamboo rafting.
We checked out at 11:00 AM and walked to the Thanakornchai Air bus stop, which was less than 500 meters away.
The next bus was scheduled for 11:30 AM, with the following one departing in the afternoon. We boarded the bus from Nakhon Ratchasima to Loei, with our destination being Loei Airport.
The fare was 59 baht. If we had chosen to go to the Loei Bus Terminal, the fare would have been 34 baht.
Image of a woman in a white dress standing in front of a waterfall.
We arrived around noon and called a taxi to take us to the Huay Krathing Reservoir. The round trip cost 600 baht, which was the best we could do.
After about half an hour, we arrived and arranged for the taxi to pick us up at 5 pm, as our flight was at 6 pm.
The atmosphere at Huay Krathing was amazing. We ordered food to eat on the boat. The rafts ranged in size, and we rented the smallest one for 200 baht. The food was not expensive. They have a boat that ties our raft and releases it into the middle of the water, leaving us there. If we want to return, we call them.
After we finished eating, we sat, lay down, and took pictures for about 3 hours. Time seemed to fly by.
We fell in love with this place.

We arrived at the airport at almost six o'clock. Three days in Chiang Khan passed by so quickly. I feel like I'm in love with this place.
It's a city that hasn't been embellished much. The people are lovely. I promised myself that I would definitely come back here again.
Thank you for reading to the end. Please follow Tal's next trip. ^^
