**Lake Phayao** was formed approximately 70 million years ago when the Earth's crust subsided, creating a basin that collects water from various streams. The word "bึง" (lake) in the local language is called "กว๊าน" (gwan). Lake Phayao is the most important water source in Phayao Province, serving as both a major freshwater fishery in the upper northern region and a popular tourist destination. It covers an area of approximately 12,831 rai (5,132 acres), making it quite expansive.
During the rainy season, the reservoir is full and picturesque.
Historically, there was no bamboo bridge to cross to the temple in the middle of the water, which is Wat Tiloakararam, one of the Unseen Thailand. It is the only temple in the middle of the water in Thailand. You have to take a boat. There are local boats available for 20 baht per person round trip.
Wat Tilok Aram is a temple built by King Tilokaraj of the Lanna Kingdom of Chiang Mai. It was constructed around 1476-1486 AD by Phraya Yutthitthira, the ruler of Phayao. During significant Buddhist holidays like Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Asalha Bucha, visitors can witness a unique water-based candlelight procession around the temple's main stupa in the middle of Kwan Phayao Lake. This is considered the only water-based candlelight procession in the world.
The houses surrounding the lake include accommodations, restaurants, and souvenir shops.
The panoramic viewpoint in Phayao Province offers a breathtaking view of the vast expanse of Kwan Phayao Lake. Easily accessible from the main road, this scenic spot is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Phayao.
