"Traveling Trang, Sleeping on Koh Rok: A Budget-Friendly Guide"

February 14-18, 2017

I have had the opportunity to visit many beaches in the south, including several islands. Some islands impressed me, while others were just okay.

Personally, if it's about underwater scenery, Koh Lipe is my all-time favorite.

For pristine white sand and long stretches of beach, Koh Tachai and Koh Mai Thon are the top choices.

However, there is another island that I want to visit the most, which is Koh Rok.

Driven by countless reviews, I embarked on a journey to witness the "real deal" firsthand.

This trip's itinerary was meticulously planned based on extensive review research. Ultimately, we were able to visit our desired destinations within the allotted timeframe. In my opinion, planning is the most challenging aspect of any trip (although finances are arguably more crucial).
Day 1: Don Mueang - Trang (overnight stay in Trang city)
Day 2: Koh Rok (snorkeling, overnight stay on Koh Rok)
Day 3: 4-island snorkeling trip (overnight stay in Trang city)
Day 4: Exploring Trang city
Day 5: Trang - Don Mueang
**Disclaimer: This trip is not recommended for individuals who dislike snorkeling, are prone to seasickness, or experience motion sickness, as nearly half of the itinerary involves snorkeling activities.**

This trip, I came with my girlfriend. However, I must confess that when we booked the flight tickets, we didn't plan to travel on Valentine's Day. We just clicked and booked the tickets on the cheapest day we saw. As I mentioned, I'm a fan of booking tickets a year in advance, or simply put, Nok Air's cheap tickets. So, of course, our round-trip tickets cost less than a thousand baht.

The trip was exciting from the start. My girlfriend forgot both her ID card and driver's license at her friend's place. We had to run around asking the AirAsia counter and AOT for help. Finally, she managed to use her student ID card with a photo as identification. We almost had to take the train instead!

Our journey began with a flight from Don Mueang to Trang province.

After approximately one and a half hours, we arrived at Trang Province. The airport here is quite small, but it was also very crowded.

Upon arrival, the first thing to do is purchase a bus ticket to the city. The ticket counter is located directly at the exit gate. Tickets cost 90 baht per person.

We have arrived at our accommodation for today, "Sri Trang".

The accommodation includes an on-site restaurant, perfect for those who prefer to avoid venturing out for meals. I, for one, appreciate this convenience.

With full bellies and packed bags, Trang was ours to explore. What are we waiting for? Let's go!

After inquiring with locals, I discovered several markets suitable for walking exploration, eliminating the need for motorbike rentals.

My brother told me that there is a small market in front of the hotel. However, if you want to visit a larger market, you will need to walk for about a kilometer. It is called "Talad Sinta" and has a wide variety of food stalls.

We talked and stopped to take pictures, but we still haven't arrived. It's quite a distance.

If you are not a walking enthusiast, please rent a motorbike.

Finally, I arrived at "Shinta Market," a market with an abundance of food options, just as my friend had described. I walked around twice, trying to make a decision, but there were just too many tempting choices.

Let's take a picture.

The market offers a variety of food and small items for sale, along with numerous photo opportunities, making it a delightful and engaging experience.

Did you forget something? We have a plan to go to Koh Rok tomorrow. Koh Rok! Go to sleep early!

The long-awaited day has finally arrived. I eagerly packed my bags and waited for the car to pick me up. Koh Rok, wait for me!

Today, we embarked on our journey by van from our accommodation to Khuan Tung Ku Pier, the main port for crossing to Koh Muk.

This trip was booked with Koh Mook Chaw Lay Tour for the "Camping Koh Rok + Diving 4 Islands Trang" package.

In my personal opinion, it was incredibly worthwhile. Throughout the two days and one night, we had a private tour with a local guide. It was like having our own private long-tail boat taking us on a wonderful adventure.

After a short drive, we arrived at the Khuan Tung Ku pier. It's a small pier, mainly serving a fishing village. The lack of crowds made it feel like we were waiting for a relative to pick us up for a trip to the sea.

We waited for a while, and then a short, dark-skinned man approached us and said, "Your bag, your bag." We were confused, wondering why he was speaking English to us.

In response, we switched to Thai and greeted him with "Hello." He seemed a little embarrassed and replied, "I thought you were a foreigner (in a southern accent)."

This is our tour guide, Bang La, and his assistant. They kept us entertained throughout the journey, but I regret to say that I forgot to ask the assistant's name.

It's time for the small boats to leave the shore and head towards Koh Rok!

The boat sailed past the fishing village and through the mangrove forest for a while, then the vast blue sea came into view.

Incredibly, the weather cooperated with us. When we got off the plane yesterday, the sky was overcast, the clouds were thick, and the wind was strong.

I secretly hoped that the sun would come out tomorrow, and it did.

The scenery along the way seemed ordinary, something you could find anywhere. However, strangely enough, I couldn't put my camera down.

The shutters clicked rapidly, as if it were the first time they had been to the southern sea.

We departed from Khuan Tung Ku pier around 10:00 AM and arrived at Koh Rok around noon, taking exactly 2 hours.

Despite warnings about seasickness, the trip was worth the risk. Stay tuned for the next image to see why.

I have finally arrived at Koh Rok, an island I have long dreamed of visiting.

The sight of the pristine white sand beach against the azure waters of the sea is simply breathtaking. The soft sand yields to the touch, inviting one to sink their feet and revel in its embrace. The turquoise hues of the ocean shimmer and dance in the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that captivates the senses. The sheer beauty of this natural wonder leaves one in awe, surrendering to its allure.

The truth is that Bang Lae was going to take us diving around Koh Rok, but I begged him to let me eat first. I was starving!

As mentioned, this boat is ours, and we can change plans throughout the trip. This is the advantage of chartering a boat.

While enjoying a peaceful meal, we were occasionally greeted by small creatures.

This indicates the abundance of Koh Rok. As Koh Rok is located within the Mu Ko Lanta National Park, there are strict regulations regarding accommodation. The rule is that all garbage must be taken back to the mainland and not left on Koh Rok, even a single piece. This is ensured by the park rangers.

After lunch, it was time to hunt for Nemo. We continued diving at four different points around Koh Rok. Let the pictures tell the story. All underwater images were taken with my trusty SJ Wifi4000 camera.

Before entering the water, raise two fingers in a gesture of determination.

The aftermath was predictably exhausting. I was utterly drained. 55555

The first dive site was quite deep, so we couldn't take many photos.

However, the remaining areas are shallow, so you can take pictures comfortably.

Nemo was present at every dive site we visited, but unfortunately, our camera battery died.

At the final dive spot, Bang La informed us that the waves were strong, making diving inadvisable.

Indeed, even if you hadn't told me, I would have requested to return to shore. The previously still boat began to rock violently, nearly causing my lunch to make an unwelcome appearance. As a result, we arrived back on land approximately one hour earlier than usual.

Upon reaching the shore, my enthusiastic partner wasted no time in showering and changing clothes before anyone else. The island, which had been bustling with tourists at noon due to several tour groups stopping for lunch, was now peaceful, with only a few foreign groups staying overnight like us.

For those concerned about the accommodation, the tour company has already booked tents for us. The tents are in good condition and come equipped with pillows, blankets, and bedsheets. The bathrooms are separated for men and women, with multiple stalls available. They are also quite clean.

The beauty is beyond description.

Koh Rok is an island that I think is very complete. In the evening, you can watch the sunset, and in the morning, you can watch the sunrise on the other side. It's worth it. You don't have to walk far or take a boat to wait for the sunrise or sunset. We just walk around taking pictures, and time will take us to see these things ourselves.

The Sichuan hairy crab greeted me again.

It's clear that my girlfriend enjoys taking photos.

This island is yours.

It's incredible how quickly the 2-3 hours we spent taking photos flew by.

I strolled along the sandy beach on the right, following the sunlight. No matter how many times I pressed the shutter, it was never enough. I never felt bored, no matter how many times I pressed the shutter.

Singles step aside, couples make some noise!

The sun gradually rose, growing larger and larger, before slowly sinking below the horizon of the sea.

I never tire of watching the sun set over the horizon.

The island also offers a viewpoint for panoramic views of Koh Rok. The park ranger informed us that the path is quite steep but there are steps to facilitate the climb. More importantly, it provides a unique perspective for sunset viewing. However, I was unable to visit the viewpoint as I realized the need to climb after the sunset.

My stomach seems to know the time. As soon as the sun sets, my stomach starts to growl.

The park has a convenience store, so you don't have to worry about going hungry. However, it has opening and closing times, so it is not open all the time.

Another thing I wouldn't recommend is bringing your own food, as the ants here are very fast. I left my empty milk carton in the tent for only 10-15 minutes, and the black ants invaded my tent. Another thing to watch out for is the monitor lizards. They walk around and greet the camera without fear. Well, we are sleeping in their territory, so we have to give in to them. 55555

The camping trip to Koh Rok Island ended with a picture of sunbathing. Every time I see it, I still can't get used to it. It's not anything, it's just hot!

Tomorrow, we have an appointment with Bang La to explore the four islands of Trang and go snorkeling.

This morning, I set my alarm for 6:30 AM to wake up and watch the sunrise. I had heard that it was one of the highlights of Koh Rok. However, laziness overcame me, and I ended up sleeping in. My girlfriend, on the other hand, didn't care whether I woke up or not. She grabbed her camera and left the tent to wait for the sunrise. I closed my eyes and went back to sleep.

In addition to not waking up this morning, I have also done things that have made my ears ring until now.

I accidentally formatted my camera because I thought I had already downloaded all the photos. However, I forgot to consider how excited and eager my girlfriend was this morning when she was waiting to take pictures of the sunrise. There are no photos on her phone either. I made a mistake.

This morning, as usual, my boyfriend showered and got dressed, waiting for me to capture our last memorable moments on Koh Rok.

At eight o'clock in the morning, we will be picked up at the front of the island by Bang La to head to Koh Kradan, a beautiful island in Trang province.

What could possibly bring such joy? The grumpy person from this morning who was upset that I deleted the sunrise picture is nowhere to be found. 55555

The morning sun shines beautifully, reflecting off the seawater with an unyielding splendor that rivals the evening sun.

Promptly at eight o'clock in the morning, Bang La arrived at the island's front to pick us up and assist us with loading our luggage onto the boat.

Until next time, Koh Rok. I promise there will definitely be a second visit.

The return trip took about an hour to reach Koh Kradan, our first diving spot.

The wind was significantly stronger today than on the way here, causing rough waves, although not excessively so. The sensation on the boat was akin to riding an amusement park ride, which was thrilling.

We have arrived at our first dive site, located in front of Koh Kradan.

I was quite impressed with this dive site. There were many fish that I had never seen before.

Nemo lives in the deep sea, where it is impossible for an amateur swimmer like me to dive and take pictures. 5555

I have found red galingale. There is not just one plant, but many.

Schools of fish swam towards us, seemingly excited to welcome us as guests to their home.

Another common find is brain coral, which truly resembles a brain.

After a long swim, Bangla called us over and led us to the beach of Koh Muk for lunch.

The morning rush hour has begun, and the number of tourists has increased significantly. The once sparse boats have multiplied, crisscrossing the waters in a bustling display.

Our next stop is the Emerald Cave, a highlight of Trang province and one of Thailand's hidden gems.

Regrettably, I did not bring my camera, so I was unable to capture any images to share.

I hope you have the opportunity to experience it yourself. Floating through the cave was exhilarating and exciting, especially in the darkness. Despite the darkness, the atmosphere was lively with tourists cheering and shouting in excitement.

We spent about half an hour in the Emerald Cave, and our stomachs were already growling with hunger. It was time for lunch. For this meal, Bang drove us to Happy Beach, a small beach near Koh Mook, for lunch.

The next dive site was located near Koh Muk. However, my physical condition was deteriorating. I was severely seasick, and the waves were getting stronger as the evening approached. Let's just say that two bags weren't enough. 5555555

However, my girlfriend is like a black hole, diving and surfacing as if the waves of the sea could not touch her.

My paradise, it's time to go back. It took Bangla half an hour to safely bring us back to the Khuan Tung Ku pier. There is a freshwater shower room available at the pier for 15 Thai baht, just drop it in the box.

After a quick wash, the van arrived to take us to Trang city center.

I am not sleeping in my usual place tonight. I have switched to the Hop Inn Hotel. I don't know why, but I really like this hotel. If there is a Hop Inn Hotel in any province, I will always choose it as my first option.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we showered, changed, and ventured out to find something to eat in the vicinity.

At this point, I'm not picky anymore. I'll eat at any restaurant I come across because all I can think about is getting back to my bed. 55555

Let's move on to the next day.

February 17, 2017

I have booked a taxi to pick us up at the hotel and take us to the airport at 8:30 AM. Our flight back to Don Mueang is at 9:50 AM.

This trip seemed to be going well, but the climax is here.

"I remembered the wrong flight date." Yes, I remembered the wrong flight date. I didn't realize it until I was tagging my luggage and saw that my boarding pass was for the 18th, not the 17th.

My partner and I could only look at each other and think to ourselves, "We're screwed."

There was nothing I could do, so I called to clear my work and continued my trip in Trang. As a result, our 4-day, 3-night trip turned into a 5-day, 4-night trip by default.

The same as before, please. The fare is 90 baht per person, and we will drop you off at your destination.

I will be staying at "Maitree House" tonight. It is located near the train station and Trang city center. The reason I chose this place is because I will be renting a motorbike to explore Trang city all day today.

The second floor of this place has a living room for relaxation, and there is a balcony in front that extends out for sitting and enjoying the breeze, watching the local people's way of life. It's another way to enjoy a day without rushing.

Waking up early and missing my flight, I decided to store my luggage in my room and rent a motorbike to explore the city.
My plan was to find a cool café with a nice atmosphere to have some food and relax for a bit. Then, I would head to the botanical garden, as it was too hot to go anywhere else during the day. Plus, I heard that there was a very high canopy walkway there.

I rode my motorbike around, looking for a café without consulting Google for recommendations.
I kept circling around and ended up back at the same spot several times. Finally, I found the café I was looking for. As soon as I saw it, I parked my motorbike and went inside.

This restaurant is called "Old Town" and is located near the old buildings in Trang city.

This establishment offers a single menu item: Khao Soi. I couldn't resist trying it, and it was delicious! I give it a solid three out of five stars.

The interior design of the shop is stunning, making it a perfect spot for taking photos.

The price was quite reasonable. I ordered a glass of water, a cup of khao soi, and a piece of Trang cake. I only paid with one red banknote.

As mentioned, this restaurant is located near the old buildings in Trang city. Therefore, the atmosphere outside the restaurant truly reflects the old town vibe.

There is hidden street art.

After the army has been energized, it's time to ride out of town.

The next station is the Botanical Garden, which is about 13 kilometers from the city. There are nature trails for exploring the area, including the Treetop Canopy Walkway, which is said to be the first and only one of its kind in Thailand. The walkway is 175 meters long and has three levels, ranging from 10 to 18 meters in height. I'm definitely going to check it out and see what it's like.

After walking a few hundred meters, I came across the bridge. It was a steel bridge, and every step I took produced a clanging sound. I couldn't help but feel a little nervous.

This bridge was built for the purpose of nature study. As you walk across it, you will encounter a diverse array of tree species and be serenaded by the harmonious chorus of birdsong.

The sound transported me to the depths of a forest. However, I couldn't take in the scenery because I was too focused on the path ahead. It was incredibly high.

My throat is getting dry, and my stomach is starting to growl again. I think I'll head back to the city and grab something to eat.

Fortunately for us, there is a walking street today, right in front of the hotel. The hotel staff told us that the walking street is usually open every Thursday to Sunday. There are a lot of food stalls, I can't believe it! I have to see it with my own eyes. 55555

It's less than a fifty-step walk to get there. I don't want to say how many times I've swallowed my saliva.

There is an abundance of delicious food available, and most importantly, it is incredibly affordable.

Another popular souvenir from Trang, besides Trang cake, is "Khanom Pia", a traditional Chinese pastry.

A wide variety of flavors are available, and they are freshly fried on the spot. May I try three pieces, please?

My digestive juices seem to be working, everything looks delicious.

Big crabs are coming!

The squid is not to be outdone, and it comes with the same.

In addition to the abundance of food, there is also a wide variety of goods for sale. It is no wonder that this market is bustling with activity.

With food in both hands, I munched as I walked, allowing the food to settle before taking a motorbike ride to enjoy the city breeze. One thing I've noticed since arriving here is how clean the city is, despite the scarcity of trash cans. This is one of the things I admire most about this place.

Incredibly, my luck with missing my flight wasn't over yet. I got to see a Nora dance performance, which is quite rare to find. And to see it in the actual location was amazing.

The young dancers displayed exceptional talent, showcasing impressive coordination and synchronization in their performance. Their graceful movements and synchronized steps were reminiscent of seasoned professionals.

It's time to go to sleep. We have to fly back early tomorrow morning.

The car picked us up early in the morning to take us to the airport. It's time to go home.

Our five-day stay here was truly worthwhile. We visited every landmark and destination on our list, and each one left a lasting impression on us.

No matter how vast the sky may seem, it is never too wide for us, as small as we are, to embark on our journeys.

We shall meet again, "Trang City".
