Chicacha, a name unfamiliar to many, holds a rich history rooted in the ancient languages of Pali and Sanskrit. Meaning "to eat and drink," the name aptly reflects the cafe's legacy, spanning three generations and over 80 years.

The cafe's journey began with the founder's grandfather, who sold traditional Thai coffee. His son, adapting to the changing times, shifted the business towards selling electrical appliances. However, the current generation has returned to the cafe's roots, reviving the sale of freshly brewed coffee. This return to tradition marks a significant chapter in the cafe's story, blending the past with the present.


The interior of the shop remains unchanged, with electrical appliances from the father's generation still displayed on the shelves around the store. In addition to freshly brewed coffee, the shop also offers tea, cocoa, and oil-free roti, which is cooked using heat instead of oil on a non-stick pan.

The roti has a crispy exterior and a chewy interior, drizzled with condensed milk.

Choti Jit Phochana, Phraeng Phuthon: This is another long-standing Thai restaurant in the city of Thonburi. The restaurant has been open since the reign of King Rama V, or for over 90 years. It is a small shophouse and is very famous among foreigners. The restaurant has been featured in many magazines and travel guides, such as Lonely Planet and Travel, and has received numerous awards from TripAdvisor. However, if you ask Thai customers, they may take a while to think about where the restaurant is located. When I went to eat there, there were two tables of foreign customers.

Chotijit Restaurant: A Culinary Journey from Humble Beginnings to a Diverse Menu

Chotijit Restaurant, starting with a mere two dishes, has blossomed into a culinary haven boasting over 500 delectable options. Among their most popular creations are the yam thua plu (winged bean salad), yam hua plii (banana blossom salad), and mee krob (crispy noodles).

I had the pleasure of sampling the mee krob (95 baht), a generous portion of crispy noodles adorned with battered and fried shrimp and succulent chicken. The flavor profile was a symphony of sweet, sour, and savory notes, making it an ideal accompaniment to rice. What truly sets this dish apart is the inclusion of fresh kale, a unique and refreshing twist rarely encountered in other mee krob offerings.

Kiew Teow Neua Kim Thong, Phraeng Phuthon: A renowned beef noodle restaurant in the Phraeng Phuthon district, established for over 50 years. It is one of the first restaurants in Thailand to receive the prestigious Shell Chuan Chim award. The restaurant occupies two adjacent shop houses, but one entrance is closed, giving the impression of a small, narrow space from the front. Upon entering, one is greeted by a nostalgic atmosphere with vintage photographs adorning the walls.


This restaurant serves clear beef noodle soup with beef balls, tendon balls, marinated fresh beef, liver, heart, and stewed beef. I ordered dry wide noodles with stewed beef balls (50 baht). The beef balls were chewy and delicious, but the highlight was the stewed beef. It was incredibly flavorful and rich, with both meat and tendon. I especially enjoy stewed beef with this level of richness, so it was a perfect match for my taste.

Praeng Phuthon Noodles (Ancient Cantonese Recipe): A roast pork noodle shop that has been open for over 70 years and has 6 branches under the brands Praeng Phuthon Noodles and Wong Muan. However, the branches under the Wong Muan brand will have a wider variety of menus.


The restaurant makes its own noodles and dumpling wrappers from scratch, without using any preservatives. The char siu is marinated in honey and roasted in a charcoal oven using a traditional wooden barrel, resulting in a subtle smoky aroma.


The "Red Pork Wonton Noodles" (45 baht) was served in a small bowl. The noodles were thin egg noodles, which I prefer. The red pork was a bit tough, but maybe it was just that particular piece.

Nattporn Fresh Coconut Ice Cream: This shop is another old-fashioned shop that has been open for over 70 years. It serves traditional Thai ice cream that still retains its original taste very well. This kind of authentic Thai flavor is hard to find nowadays. The shop offers a limited variety of flavors: fresh coconut, fresh milk, chocolate, coffee, milk tea, coconut, and Mahachanok mango, along with traditional Thai toppings such as red beans, mung beans, peanuts, longan, corn, lotus seeds, and candied sweet potatoes.


The price of ice cream at this shop is 25 baht. However, mango sticky rice is 30 baht, and durian is 50 baht. In the past, a cup would be served with four small scoops, but now it is served with one large scoop. The reason for this change is that the owner of the shop has severe wrist pain and is no longer able to scoop as much ice cream.


This restaurant has a policy of not combining flavors in a single cup, requiring customers to purchase multiple cups if they wish to try different flavors. This strategy is likely intended to increase sales, as most customers would want to sample at least two or three flavors. Additionally, if customers are dining with friends or family, they may be able to try different flavors without having to purchase additional cups. However, for solo diners, this policy could potentially lead to them purchasing two cups of ice cream.


I tried Thai tea for 25 baht, coconut for 25 baht, Mahachanok mango for 30 baht, and durian for 50 baht. It's a bit much, but there were two of us. I like the Thai tea here, it's delicious. The coconut is a bit bland, but the mango tastes good. The flavor is strong.


The ice cream here is made using traditional methods and ingredients, resulting in a texture with noticeable ice crystals. This can make the flavor seem bland and diluted compared to modern, creamier ice cream options. If you prefer smooth, creamy ice cream, you might be disappointed.

Udom Phochana Phaeng Phutorn: A long-standing restaurant in Phaeng Phutorn, open for 80 years (according to the owner). The recipes have been passed down through generations, with the current generation maintaining the original flavors of the pioneers. The menu features classic dishes such as red pork and crispy pork rice, curry rice, stew rice, wonton noodles, and fresh spring rolls.

I ordered pork curry rice (40 baht) and beef curry rice (50 baht). I had almost forgotten this curry flavor, as it is Chinese-style curry. I have been eating Japanese-style curry all the time, so I can't even remember when I last had this flavor. This menu is a curry that is not very strong, but the smell of curry powder is still clear. It is eaten with potatoes, which go well together.



The roasted pork and crispy pork rice (40 baht) had a rich sauce, but it was a bit too sweet. The crispy pork was delicious, but the roasted pork was a bit tough.


Red pork wonton soup (40 baht) The wontons are tightly packed, although not very large. The clear soup is slightly sweet. The red pork in this menu is softer than the red pork rice, probably because it has been scalded with hot water.

This is a Thai restaurant that serves pork brain soup. It is located in the Phraeng Phuton area.

A Culinary Legacy: 60 Years of Exquisite Flavors

Established in 1957, this renowned restaurant in the historic Phraeng Phuton district boasts a legacy spanning over six decades. Notably, it was the first establishment to receive the prestigious Shell Chuan Chim award in October 1961, solidifying its status as a culinary legend.

The restaurant's signature dish, stewed pig brain, follows a traditional Chinese Hakka recipe. Remarkably, all accompaniments are meticulously prepared in-house, without relying on machinery or external suppliers. This dedication to craftsmanship extends to their extensive selection of meatballs, including crispy meatballs, fish balls, pork and radish meatballs, stuffed tofu, Hakka meatballs, pork and liver sausage, crispy fish skin, and more.

In its early days, the restaurant was affectionately known as the "5-Pot Meatball Shop" due to the five pots used to display and separate the various meatballs and accompaniments. This unique presentation reflects the restaurant's commitment to preserving culinary traditions while offering a diverse and delectable experience.


The price of a Thai-style noodle soup at this restaurant starts at 70 baht for a regular bowl and 100 baht for a special bowl. I ordered a "everything" noodle soup without offal but with pork brain (100 baht) and a side of rice for 5 baht. The bowl was generously filled with ingredients, including 1 pork and radish meatball, 2 small meatballs, 3 fried meatballs, 3 pork meatballs, fried fish skin, and a generous portion of pork brain.


The pork and daikon meatballs are soft and have a strong daikon flavor. The fried meatballs and organic fish skin are delicious. The pork meatballs are not as chewy as those in many other restaurants, but rather soft. The restaurant's soup is a clear broth with an unfamiliar taste, unlike the clear broth in other restaurants.


This was my first time trying pig brain here, and it was a unique experience. The brain was incredibly soft, almost melting on the tongue. Many people say that the pig brain at this restaurant has no odor, but I could still detect an unfamiliar scent. Personally, I found all of the side dishes to be delicious and finished them all. However, I couldn't finish the pig brain, as I was unfamiliar with the taste and had never tried it before. This is something you have to try for yourself to understand, as it's difficult to describe.


This restaurant is located at Phraeng Phuthon. If you come from Atsadang Road, it will be very close. The shop will be on the right-hand side. I went to this shop twice. The first time I went at 1:30 PM, everything was sold out. So I had to go back again to be able to eat.

Pork meatballs at Praeng Nara: When you're in the Praeng Nara area, you shouldn't miss the famous "Beautiful Daughter's Pork Meatballs" shop. It's so popular that it's been featured on social media and numerous TV shows. I've passed by the shop many times, both during the day and at night. Sometimes during the day, I see them selling noodles, while other times they only sell grilled pork. So, it's a bit unpredictable.

Grilled pork skewers, 7 baht each, are small skewers with only 4 pieces. The meatballs are fragrant, chewy, and delicious. The dipping sauce is rich and flavorful.


This shop is located on the corner of Tanao Road and Phraeng Nara. It is very easy to spot, as it is directly opposite the Bangkok Bank.

Renowned Shop at Sam Phraeng 9. Pa Sri's Crispy Crepes at Phraeng Nara

The Praeng Nara Crispy Crepe Shop, also known as Auntie Sri's Ancient Crispy Crepe, is a long-standing establishment serving crispy crepes based on a royal recipe. The shop was originally run by Mae Samun (Mrs. Samun Hirunwatthit), who was the head chef of the palace of His Royal Highness Prince Narathip Prapanpong. Auntie Sri, her daughter-in-law, inherited the recipe and continues to make and sell the crepes herself. She works alone and can be a bit independent, sometimes responding to questions and sometimes not, depending on her mood. This may be due to her hearing difficulties.


I waited for him since he started setting up the stove. He slowly did his thing, not paying attention to anything. From spreading the charcoal, setting up the stove, burning the stove, preparing all the side dishes, he did it meticulously, bit by bit, until he was ready. He started by sprinkling coconut on the stove and leaving it there until it smoked, then he wiped it off. The aunt said it was to wipe the dust off the stove.


The aunt will then gradually spread the flour onto the stove.

When the desired consistency is reached, add the egg yolk and stir continuously. Once the egg yolk is almost cooked, add the sugar mixed with sesame seeds, grated coconut, shredded winter melon, and dried persimmon.

The savory filling is also delicious. The shrimp, coconut, and makrut lime leaves used in the filling are not too salty and have a unique fragrance. Those who prefer egg white meringue-based fillings may not enjoy this traditional recipe. However, I personally prefer this traditional recipe over the egg white cream version.


The price is 20 baht with an egg and 10 baht without an egg. It took almost an hour to wait since the shop opened. Was it worth the wait? You have to try it yourself. The shop says it opens early in the morning, but it's best to go around 1 pm to be safe.

Sweet Treats at Klong Daeng, Phraeng Nara: This shop has been around for a long time, but many people simply call it "Sweet Treats Phraeng Nara," "Uncle Daeng's Shop," or "Klong Daeng's Sweet Treats." It's a traditional Thai dessert shop with a long history, and it has even received the "Pep Pisadarn" award from Mae Choy Nang Ram.


This sweet shop sells approximately 12 pots of sweets per day.

I ordered pumpkin curry (15 baht) and black sticky rice (15 baht), both cups without too much sweetness. The taste was well-balanced and just right. The price was also very cheap, only 15 baht each. This shop is located on Thanon Tanao. If you walk into Thanon Phraeng Nara for ten to twenty meters, you will find the shop.

Masiya Thick Rice Noodles, Phraeng Nara: Another long-standing eatery in this area. According to Masiya, the owner, the shop was originally a beauty salon, but it didn't do very well, so she switched to selling rice noodles. When I asked her how long she had been selling them, she said she couldn't remember, but she started when she was young, so I'd say it's been 30-40 years.

This restaurant specializes in thick rice noodle soup with crispy pork. I only tried the thick rice noodle soup (40 baht). The broth was a bit weak in flavor, not very concentrated, and a bit bland. However, the crispy pork was a bit salty, so eating them together helped to enhance the flavor a bit.

Yod Pak Restaurant (40-Year Recipe): Another popular restaurant that people talk about a lot. This restaurant mainly sells Rad Na, Pad See Ew, grilled meatballs, pork satay, and fresh spring rolls. Rad Na and Pad See Ew are available with a choice of rice noodles, wide rice noodles, crispy rice noodles, and crispy egg noodles.


- Stir-fried rice noodles with soy sauce and pork 45 baht

- Wide rice noodles with marinated pork gravy 40 baht

- Crispy noodles stir-fried with soy sauce 50 baht

  • 10 skewers of satay for 70 baht. The skewers were very small and the meat was bland and lacked flavor. The dipping sauce was also very watery.



The marinated pork at this restaurant is tender and delicious. The Chinese broccoli is also crispy. The gravy is fragrant and slightly sweet. Overall, it's a delicious dish. The crispy noodles stir-fried with soy sauce are also unique. I've never had anything like this before. The stir-fried soy sauce and gravy dishes are delicious, but I think the pork satay is still a long way off.



This restaurant has three branches in total: at the Tiger God Shrine, Taling Pling, and Bang Khun Phrom. The location of this restaurant is on the same side as the Tiger God Shrine. It is very easy to spot, as it is a four-unit shophouse.

Famous Shops at Samphraeng 14: Auntie Nee's Snow Taro


**Snow taro: A renowned snow taro shop in the Tiger God Shrine area has been open for over 10 years. This shop is considered one of the most famous in the area. The shop uses fragrant taro from Nakhon Pathom, cuts it into pieces, and fries it with pandan leaves for about 10 minutes. The shop's syrup also includes pandan leaves and spring onions. Once the taro is cooked and has a light yellow color, it is coated in the syrup, ensuring it is evenly covered until dry. The sugar adheres to the taro, making it incredibly delicious when eaten fresh. However, if left overnight, the crispness will diminish.**


"Jea Ni" taro snow, 60 baht per box, available in multiple pieces. The sweetness is just right due to the large taro pieces and the subtle aroma of shallots. The shop also offers taro chips for 60 baht.

This is a long-standing eatery in the Sam Phraeng area, serving a variety of dishes including fish balls, pork balls, fish maw, white fish maw, shrimp balls, and braised duck. The eatery's meatballs are freshly made and do not contain any preservatives.


The thick rice noodles and cold yentafo soup cost 40 baht and are generously filled with ingredients, including large shrimp balls. The soup is predominantly sour with a hint of sweetness and a rich flavor. Notably, it includes ba-teng, which I initially mistook for regular red pork.


The shop is located in Trok Nawa. If you come from the Tiger God Shrine, turn left into Trok Nawa. Continue straight until you reach the middle of the alley. You will see the shop on your left.
