Mount Moiwa, a small mountain located southwest of Sapporo, offers stunning views of the city, especially during sunset. To reach the summit, take a cable car that ascends to three-quarters of the mountain's height, followed by a mini-cable car to the peak. The summit features "The Jewel" restaurant with a rooftop observation deck, a planetarium, and a theater. To get there, take the Namboku Line (green line) from Sapporo Station (N06) to Susukino Station (N08). The platform for boarding the train can be identified by the timetables at the station. Once on the platform, follow the arrows indicating the direction of travel. The image shows the direction as N07 Odori, which aligns with our destination.
At Susukino Station (N08), exit the station and cross the street to board the streetcar. You can board from either side, as it runs in a loop.
We boarded the tram at Susukino Station (SC23) and rode it in the opposite direction to Ropeway Iriguchi Station (SC10).
Get off the tram and cross the street to wait for the free bus at this stop: Mt. Moiwa Shuttle Bus Stop
The free bus service operates from 10:20 AM to 9:20 PM every 20 minutes. We waited about 10 minutes before the bus arrived.
The snow in Sapporo has melted significantly, but there is still some snow remaining on the sides of the road. There should be some snow on the mountain, so I'm going to go for a snowmobile ride.
After about 10 minutes, the train arrived at Sanroku Station. We got off the train and took the lift to buy tickets.
From Sanroku Station, we need to take a cable car to Middle Station and then transfer to a mini-cable car to the top of the mountain at Summit Station, which is a viewpoint and nature trail. However, during the winter season, the nature trail at the top is closed.
The cable car and mini cable car ride costs 1,700 yen per person, and the ticket includes two pictures of the cable car and mini cable car at the bottom. When you use the cable car or mini cable car, a hole will be punched in the corresponding picture. However, we also wanted to ride the Snow Cruising, which costs 800 yen. But if you buy a Set Ticket that includes all three items, it only costs 2,000 yen. So we went for it.
The cable car began its first service at 11:00 AM, with departures every 15 minutes until 10:00 PM. However, during our visit, the schedule was adjusted to departures every 20 minutes. While waiting for the cable car, we noticed signs indicating the temperature at each station and the visibility of the view from the mountaintop.
View of the parking lot and city from the cable car waiting point at Summit Station.
It's time to get on the cable car. When we got there, we chose to stand at the front. As soon as the cable car started moving, I realized I had made a mistake. I should have stood at the back to get a better view. There was nothing I could do about it, though, as the car was full of people taking pictures on the way up. I'll just have to stand on the other side on the way down.
The sky is clear today, the weather is very good, and the view is clear.
There is only one point where the cable cars pass each other, so aim carefully. If you miss it, you'll have to wait for the next round.
We boarded the gondola at the Middle Station. There was a souvenir shop at this point, but we decided to queue for the mini cable car to the top first. We would come back down later to explore the shop, as we had to take a snowmobile ride from here anyway. On the day we visited, the mini cable car from the Middle Station to the Summit Station had changed from running every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes, starting from 11:15 am. We didn't have to wait long before boarding, and this time we chose to sit on the lower level so we could take some beautiful photos of the view.
At Summit Station, follow the signs to the second floor, where you will find a cinema and restaurants. The rooftop offers panoramic views.
We haven't had lunch yet, so we went to a restaurant to eat and enjoy the view.
The most appealing dish ordered today was the shrimp, followed by the chicken curry. The other curry dishes were not as well-received by Thai customers.
Ordering an ice cream set with juice or tea today will be cheaper than ordering them separately.
The price of this meal does not include 8% tax, which will be added to the bill. This may result in a slight increase in the final price.
After a satisfying meal, let's head up to the rooftop. Since we're here, we should definitely ring the bell. Luckily, there's no one else up here yet.
Enjoy the panoramic view today! The weather is perfect, offering a clear and expansive vista.
This angle near the radio and television station's pillar offers a unique perspective for taking photos.
There is a path leading down. Let's go down and explore.
As you walk down the ramp, you will find a large open space on the first floor. There is a door that leads outside. You can bring your children here to play in the snow.
Upon returning to the Middle Station, present your Snow Cruising ticket. Before boarding, you will be provided with a thermal suit. It is highly recommended to wear it, as the wind can be quite chilly during the ride. The suits are very effective in keeping you warm.
Today, only our group of five played. We rented a car and had fun taking photos and videos. But sitting outside was really cool. Let's enjoy the photos!
When sitting in the front, snow from the wheels can splash onto you when the car accelerates, turns, or goes uphill.
After snow cruising, we browsed the souvenir shops. However, we quickly descended as we wanted to spend the afternoon shopping for souvenirs. We wouldn't have time to buy them on other days. The remaining program includes visiting Kiroro and Tomamu before heading back to the airport.
We chose to stand in front of the slope, taking some beautiful pictures with the scenery and capturing a long shot.
Mount Moiwa Review
We took the cable car, then the bus, and finally the tram to Susukino Station. We shopped until it got dark, then walked back to our hotel through the underground passage. Before heading back, we stopped to take some photos at the Sapporo TV Tower.
This concludes our review of Mount Moiwa. Thank you!
