In the era of burgeoning domestic tourism, trends guide the way. Tourists seek experiences that align with their preferences, while businesses adapt to the evolving landscape. A surge of small, affordable hostels has emerged, catering to budget-conscious travelers seeking a laid-back, "slow life" experience. Today, we delve into one such hostel, exploring its unique features and appeal.
Siam PlugIn Gallery Hostel
This newly opened hostel, established in early May 2017, occupies a three-story townhouse that has been renovated and decorated in a trendy industrial loft style with Thai contemporary elements, reflecting the current trend in hostel design.
Floor 1: A Warm Welcome Awaits
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a cozy lobby featuring a bar counter. This lower level houses the Siam Plug In cafe & bistro, serving freshly brewed coffee, delicious food, and refreshing beverages. The warm and inviting ambiance is enhanced by vintage-inspired décor and furnishings, both newly crafted and antique. I particularly appreciate the harmonious blend of playful and decorative elements throughout the space. The exposed brick walls add a touch of raw charm, while polished concrete and repurposed wooden planks create unique partitions for the staircase. The ceiling is cleverly divided, with a section featuring exposed concrete-style gypsum above the industrial loft-style bar counter, while another section showcases a modern take on traditional Thai wooden slatting. The wall dedicated to revered objects is adorned with genuine gold leaf, offering multiple captivating photo opportunities.
Second Floor: This floor houses guest rooms named after various piers along the Chao Phraya River. There are three rooms in total. The wall facing the entrance of the "Tha Taksin" room will be used for displaying photographs/paintings (exhibition starting approximately July).
Rooms:
- Room 1: Tha Taksin (Dormitory 1): This is a shared room for 10 guests, with a capsule-style layout. It features 6 single beds and 2 double beds. Each bed has a personal locker at the head, a reading light, a small clothes rack, a USB charging port, and a small fan for those who prefer extra cooling.
- Room 2: Tha Ratchawong (Private Room 1) is a private room for 3 people. It is decorated in wood tones with a brick headboard wall. There are bedside lamps and a small sink in the room for washing your face and brushing your teeth.
- Room 3: Tha Tien (Private Room 2) is a private room for 3 people, decorated in white tones. All rooms have key card access.
The third floor houses two guest rooms. The wall facing the front of the elephant pier will display photographs/paintings (exhibition starts around July).
- Room 1: Elephant Pier (Dormitory2) is a shared room for 12 people with a Connection Capsule design. It has 8 single beds and 2 double beds (3 single beds on the lower level and 3 single beds on the upper level, with curtains that can be opened for conversation, suitable for groups of friends traveling together).
- Room 2: Tha Maharaj (Dormitory 3), 3rd floor, shared room for 8 people, Bulk Bed type with 8 single beds
Floor 4: Private Room and Rooftop Bar
The fourth floor features a single private room and a future rooftop terrace, envisioned as a small bar for guests to enjoy the atmosphere. This floor is exclusively accessible to hotel guests.
Room 1: Tha Phra Athit (Dormitory 4)
This room is a shared dormitory for 6 guests, featuring 6 single beds in a bulk bed configuration. It is only available for booking as a whole room and is ideal for groups of travelers.
- The rooftop terrace in front of the exit to the rooftop has a wall with a written record of the history of Bangkok for foreign tourists to read. The atmosphere in the early evening, if the weather is not too hot, is perfect for a relaxing drink.
- Shared bathrooms are available on each floor for all guest rooms. The bathrooms on the second floor are separated by gender, while the bathrooms on the third floor are unisex. Guests are required to change into slippers upon entering the guest room area.
After exploring the rooms for a while, let's take a look at the food and beverage menu available. The prices are very reasonable. In addition, there is draft beer available, and if you are interested in Thai craft beer, it is also available. Stop by and enjoy a beer while cheering on your favorite team.
While waiting for the food we ordered, we sipped beer and chatted with B, the owner, who we discovered is also an avid hiker. We also caught up with Pond, the restaurant's PR manager, who we haven't seen in a while. We ended up having several drinks and reminiscing about past hiking adventures.
Let's take a look at some of the dishes offered by the restaurant, prepared by a Thai chef who previously worked in Australia. While the names may seem ordinary, the flavors are truly exceptional.
- Shrimp Cocktail Fritters
- Stir-fried noodles with fresh shrimp
- Stir-fried chicken noodle
- Fish and chips
- Salad roll
