Chiang Rai: A Destination Worth Visiting Even When It's Not Cold

Most people visit Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai during the winter season to escape the scorching summer heat. However, we decided to embark on a trip to Chiang Rai even though it wasn't cold. Our primary focus was exploring the city center and indulging in delicious local cuisine.

Let's begin with transportation in Chiang Rai.

We booked our roundtrip flights with Airasia for approximately 1700 baht, which was neither cheap nor expensive.

We arrived in Chiang Rai around noon and hailed a taxi using the Grab app. Fortunately, Grab was offering a promotion at the time, so we got a good deal.

Taxis in Chiang Rai are readily available and are typically yellow and red.

(Taxi fares within the Chiang Rai city area: The first 2 kilometers cost 30 baht, and each subsequent kilometer costs 4 baht, increasing by 2 baht every 500 meters. For example, a taxi ride from the Bus Terminal to Wat Phra Kaew, a distance of 3 kilometers, would cost 34 baht.)

We primarily relied on taxis during our trip, which was a bit pricey for two people but convenient.

Day 1

We took a taxi to our accommodation, Happynest Hostel, which offers both dormitory and private rooms. We opted for a private room.

The atmosphere is very lovely.

This is our room.
After we finished unpacking, we rented bicycles from the hotel for 50 baht for half a day to go find some food. The first restaurant we tried was Khao Soi Podojai (you can find it on Google Maps).

After finishing the meal, we continued to laan-tim's cafe' &gallery, following Google Maps as before.

After finishing our meal, we realized we couldn't continue cycling due to the intense heat. We returned our bicycles to the hotel and took a taxi to Wat Rong Khun.

Chiang Rai Signature 555 But it's really beautiful when you come here.

(We came in the afternoon at 3 pm, it was very hot, we couldn't walk, so we sat and waited for the sun to set before walking.)

After our walk, we called a taxi as usual to go to the Salungkum restaurant for dinner.

After lunch, we returned to our accommodation.

In the late afternoon, we walked to the Night Plaza, which was not far from our accommodation. It took us about 2 kilometers to walk there.

We stopped by a famous street vendor selling "bua loy" (sweet dumplings in coconut milk). It was delicious, but they sold out by 8 pm, so we had to hurry.

After that, we returned to our accommodation to rest.

Day 2

On our second day, we woke up to a delicious breakfast included in the room rate. It was a great deal!

We will be storing our luggage at the hotel before heading out to collect data in the city in the morning.

The first temple, Wat Phra That Doi Jom Thong

City Pillar Shrine

Then walk, walk, walk. The destination is Wat Phra Kaew

I'll pass on this temple. The stairs are too daunting. 5555

We have arrived at Wat Phra Kaew.

Exhausted from walking, we set out in search of a dessert shop.

We found Polar, a shop recommended by Wongnai.

Following Google Maps, we arrived at the shop.

The cake is plentiful.

After finishing our meal, we returned to our accommodation and changed hotels. Tonight, we will be sleeping at Eat and Sleep cafe & Bed.

The atmosphere is like a Japanese-style house, located by the river. The atmosphere is very good.

Our room cost 1,400 baht with breakfast included, which was a great deal.

However, when we arrived, it was raining heavily, so we spent our time relaxing and taking photos.

Let's have dinner at Luu Lam Restaurant this evening.

The atmosphere is excellent, with a riverside location on the Kok River.

After lunch, we walked back to our accommodation, which was just a short distance away.

That concludes Day 2.

Day 3

We woke up to a breakfast buffet where we could serve ourselves.

There was rice porridge, grilled pork, cereal, tea, coffee, and bread.

After breakfast, we went back to our room to relax until check-out time.

There was a cafe next to the accommodation, so we stopped by for a coffee before leaving.

After chilling out, we stopped by the signature shop, Ordinary Life, before heading back.

The name of the restaurant is ordinary, but the restaurant is not ordinary at all. There are a lot of people, but the food is delicious, the restaurant is beautiful, don't miss it.

From our ordinary life shop, we called a taxi to the airport.

The cost of this trip for 2 people was not very economical because we spent a lot on transportation.

However, the price of accommodation was very cheap and good for both places. If you are coming with 2 or 3 people or more, I recommend it. If you are coming with a large group, taking a taxi might be worth it. But if you are coming with 2 people and don't want to pay for expensive transportation, you can rent a motorbike or a tricycle.

End of Chiang Rai trip.

For those who have never been to Chiang Rai or have been but never explored the city, I highly recommend it.

Find cheap tickets and come during the weekdays for a different experience. Take your time and enjoy the slow pace.
