With a budget of 4,000 baht, let's explore Koh Samui together! This island offers a perfect blend of beaches, mountains, and waterfalls.
While rain falls across the country, Koh Samui boasts calm seas and minimal rainfall during July and August. This peak season enticed me to pack my bags for a 5-day, 3-night adventure from July 13th to 17th, 2017. The excitement of my first trip to Koh Samui and the southern region filled me with anticipation.
Day 1
We planned our trip by bus with Somboon Tour, Bangkok-Samui route. We called to book and paid at 7-Eleven, very convenient! The price is 590 baht per person. The Somboon Tour bus that will run from Bangkok to Koh Samui does not run every day. It runs only every other day. Some months it will run on even days, some months it will run on odd days. Anyway, please call to check first.
We boarded the bus at the Southern Bus Terminal. Upon arrival, we purchased tickets at the ticket counter and paid an additional 140 baht per person for the ferry crossing. The bus departed at 7:00 PM. The seats were comfortable, and the staff provided excellent service. Snacks, bottled water, fruit juice, and headphones for watching movies and listening to music were available from the individual PTV screens at each seat.

Around 11 pm, the train stopped for dinner. We exchanged our tickets for a delicious and free meal. The spread included rice porridge, salted eggs, stir-fried morning glory, pickled cabbage salad, crispy fish, stir-fried bamboo shoots, and much more. I could only capture a limited selection as other passengers were already enjoying their meals. The atmosphere resembled a Chinese banquet, and we ate until we were completely satisfied.
After a short nap, I woke up groggily to the sound of the bus staff asking if I wanted coffee. I suspected we were nearing our destination. The bus arrived at Don Sak Pier around 5:30 AM. The staff asked us to disembark and informed us to wait for the 6:00 AM ferry. We carried our luggage down as the bus would also board the ferry with us. However, upon reaching Koh Samui, the bus would proceed to the Koh Samui Bus Terminal.
Day 2
At six in the morning, the sky was still pitch black. The sound of a loud horn echoed as we boarded the enormous ferry that would take us to Koh Samui. We arrived early in hopes of witnessing the sunrise over the sea. Would we be fortunate enough to see it?
The boat journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Passengers can choose between air-conditioned or open-air seating. The open-air deck offers a refreshing breeze and stunning views. The boat provides a smooth ride with minimal swaying. Onboard, a shop offers a variety of snacks and drinks, including instant noodles, sausages, dim sum, and other treats.
I dozed off for a while and then rushed out to catch the sunrise. Unfortunately, I couldn't see anything as the clouds were completely blocking the view. The sun had already risen quite high, which was a shame. It was also drizzling lightly, but there were faint rays of sunlight peeking through the fluffy clouds, creating a different kind of beauty.
We arrived at Koh Samui pier around eight o'clock in the morning. Our plan was to rent a motorbike once we got off the boat. As we were walking, we saw a row of motorbike taxis parked by the side of the road, waiting for customers. One of the drivers approached us and said, "Would you like to rent a motorbike? It's only 200 baht per day, and you can return it to the pier on your way back. I'll be here waiting for you." We agreed to rent a motorbike from him, so we wouldn't have to walk around looking for one. We rode the motorbike from the pier to our accommodation, which was located near Lamai. It was quite a distance from the pier, and we were exhausted from riding the motorbike.
We opened Google Maps and continued riding. We started to feel hungry, so we looked for a place to eat. We decided on chicken rice, which came with boiled chicken, roasted chicken, noodles, bak chang, and satay. We ordered "chicken rice without skin, extra chicken, please," and I must say, it was delicious. The rice, the dipping sauce, and the soup were all excellent. I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but it was located near Lamai, next to the large Guan Yu statue. It was truly delicious.
After a satisfying meal, we set off for our accommodation at Apartment Khunpa, which we booked through Facebook for 600 baht per night for two people. We booked for three nights and were impressed by the value for money. The apartment was clean and simply decorated but stylish, offering a minimalist yet sophisticated aesthetic. The owner was very helpful, recommending interesting tourist spots and delicious restaurants. The apartment was well-equipped with a refrigerator, air conditioning, TV, water heater, and Wi-Fi. While breakfast was not included, tea, coffee, candy, and snacks were available free of charge throughout the day and night.
The room key is cute.
The bathroom is located outside on the balcony. There are two free bottles of drinking water, toothpaste, shampoo, and conditioner, but no soap.
The accommodation boasts charming and visually appealing decor, featuring stylish seating areas. Guests can take advantage of motorbike rentals and laundry services for added convenience.
We arrived at the accommodation at almost nine o'clock. We called the accommodation and they told us that we could check in right away, without having to wait until two o'clock. When we arrived at the accommodation, we asked to sleep and rest to prepare for our afternoon plans. We had planned to drive around the island to the main tourist spots. When we woke up, we had to put that plan on hold because it rained all day until dark. We could only drive out to get something to eat and then return to rest at the accommodation.
While we were free, we took some pictures in the accommodation. It gave us a hip-hip, hippo feeling....
Day 3
Yesterday, we booked a tour to Ang Thong National Marine Park with Highsea Tour. We booked it through their Facebook page, where we opted for the option without kayaking for 890 baht. This price includes snorkeling equipment, snacks, lunch, and drinks on the boat. The kayaking option costs around 1200 baht. Today, we're hoping for good weather so we can enjoy our trip.
At 7:30 AM, the van picked us up at our accommodation and gradually picked up other tourists who were also on the tour with us until the van was almost full. The van took us to the pier, where we paid the fee and then prepared to board the boat. This morning, there were snacks of bread, coffee, and bananas available.
The guide informed us that the waves and wind were quite strong, so we had to navigate against the current, causing the boat to sway a bit. However, there was no rain, which was a huge plus. As a result, the tour operator decided to change the plan and visit the inner sea first, instead of the usual starting point at Pha Chan Jaras Viewpoint. During the journey, the boat did indeed sway significantly due to the strong waves. As someone who typically experiences seasickness, I braced myself for the constant rocking. Fortunately, motion sickness medication was available on board, so I quickly took some before things got worse. Some passengers did experience nausea and vomiting, but there were plenty of bags provided.
As we approached the calm sea, the waves were gentle, allowing for a smooth ride. Kayakers prepared for their adventure, equipped with waterproof bags provided by the tour operator. Those who opted out of kayaking waited for the long-tail boat to arrive. Our boat resembled the one pictured above, although it belonged to a different company. We arrived at the same time.
The sky is so clear and bright today.
Those who kayaked continued their journey at sea after finishing their paddle. I felt a pang of regret for not joining them, especially after seeing how much fun they were having.
And then the long-tailed boat took us to the sea in
The guide told us that the climb would be around 70 meters. As soon as we arrived, we started climbing. The stairs were very steep, and we were already tired before we even reached the top. Neither my partner nor I had much stamina, but we had come this far, so we had to keep going. Let's go!
We finally arrived at the beautiful sea. The water was a stunning emerald green, and the cool breeze was refreshing. It was so enjoyable that we didn't want to leave. After admiring the scenery, we walked along the beach and waited for the tour guide to call us back for dinner.
The beach boasts crystal-clear water and an abundance of rocks.
At noon, it was time for lunch. A long-tail boat arrived to take us to a restaurant.
The food was served on a tray, reminiscent of elementary school lunches. We were able to choose our own dishes, which included massaman curry, clear soup, and two other unidentified dishes. There was also a salad, fruit, and drinks available. The food was delicious, especially the clear soup. I don't usually like massaman curry, but I finished it all. We enjoyed the meal while taking in the beautiful scenery.
The boat was anchored, allowing us to enjoy our meal while we waited for the other group who had gone kayaking to return. After filling our bellies, we decided to take some photos on the upper deck of the boat.
The boat then departed for Koh Wua Talap, which is not far away. A long-tailed boat picked us up and took us to the island as before. The guide explained that those who wanted to climb to the Pha Chan Dtra viewpoint had a total distance of 500 meters to cover, with forty minutes to climb up and forty minutes to climb down. Those who did not want to climb could swim, snorkel, or relax on the beach below.
We were very hesitant to climb because our legs were very sore from climbing the sea. The guide kept asking us what we wanted to do, suggesting we try climbing for a hundred meters first and then go swimming or diving if we couldn't make it. After much deliberation, we decided not to climb because my partner's legs were also sore. We felt very disappointed that we had come all this way but had to give up. So, we decided to ask my partner if we should go diving instead. After thinking for a while, my partner decided that it would be better not to swim and just walk around and sit in the area.
The beach boasts crystal-clear water, but swimming is prohibited due to the presence of sharp rocks. Designated areas are available for snorkeling and diving.
I'll admire the view from here at the Pha Chan Jaras viewpoint. I'm not able to climb any further.
At three o'clock, we boarded the boat for our return trip. On board, complimentary soft drinks were available. Throughout the trip, we ate and drank non-stop. Upon arrival at the pier, a van transported us directly to our accommodation. I was very impressed with this trip. The tour guide and staff were very attentive and provided excellent guidance to the tour group. However, I regret not visiting the Pha Chan Kras viewpoint. I will not miss it next time.
Day 4
Today, we planned to drive around the island. We woke up at noon and rushed to find a restaurant with a nice atmosphere for lunch. We went to Rai Yai Pan Restaurant, which is quite far from our accommodation. We drove our motorbike there, enjoying the cool breeze. Since arriving in Koh Samui, we have only encountered mild sunshine. The road to the restaurant is uphill, but it is not difficult to drive. Motorbikes can easily climb the concrete road, although it may be a bit steep. Cars can also drive up, and most people do. We were the only ones who rode a motorbike.
We have reached the peak of the mountain, and the view is breathtaking. The air is incredibly fresh and crisp, and the scenery is stunning. From our vantage point, we can see the vast expanse of the ocean and the rolling hills, creating a truly panoramic vista. The wind is strong and invigorating, adding to the overall sensory experience.
The food options include papaya salad, grilled pork neck, spicy soup, single-dish meals, desserts, and fruits. There is a wide variety to choose from, and the food is delicious and affordable.
This is what our food looked like. We forgot to take a picture of the fried chicken wings.
Salted Egg Yolk Corn Salad
Spicy pork bone soup, slurped until the broth is gone.
Sun-dried pork
Rice with Stir-fried Minced Shrimp Omelette
Enjoying the view while eating is truly a delightful experience. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the view is breathtaking. Words cannot fully describe its beauty.
After filling our bellies, we continued our journey, driving to Namtok Na Muang 2. The waterfall is not far from Rai Yai Pan. Upon arrival, we drove inside and paid a parking fee of 20 or 30 baht (I can't remember exactly). The water was abundant, with many foreigners swimming in it. The water was clear and cool, and there was a zone where you could ride an elephant and enjoy the waterfall.
After visiting the waterfall in front of the city, we continued to Hin Ta Hin Yai. We also stopped by Hin Ta Hin Yai to buy some "kalamae" as souvenirs. Hin Ta Hin Yai is not far from our accommodation.
Hin Ta is over there, can you see it?
Foreign tourists are showing interest in Hin Yai.
The water is crystal clear around Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks.
The place is full of rocks.
Kalameh purchased from Hin Ta Hin Yai
After visiting Hin Ta Hin Yai, we stored the purchased "kalamae" (a type of Thai dessert) in our room and headed to Lamai Walking Street at 7 pm. The street was very close to our accommodation and was bustling with food stalls, souvenir shops, and many tourists. We were overwhelmed by the choices and ended up buying two snacks after a long walk.
Before leaving, we stopped for noodles across from the market. The portion was generous, but the taste was average. We ordered jade noodles with red pork wontons for 50 baht per bowl.
Note: The original text is empty, so the translation is also empty.
The street food I bought from the walking street was seaweed salad with grapes for 100 baht and shrimp tempura for 60 baht. There were so many options that I couldn't decide what to eat, haha. So I only got two things. I'm full and ready for a good night's sleep.
Day 5
Prepare to check out of your accommodation. We have booked a VIP bus with บขส. 999 from Koh Samui to Bangkok for 790 baht per seat. We initially tried to book with Sombut Tour, but there were no buses running from Koh Samui on our return date. Their buses run on alternate days, with buses to Bangkok on odd days and buses to Koh Samui on even days. Sombut Tour has daily buses, but we would have to take the bus from Surat Thani Bus Terminal. The bus departs at 3:30 PM and arrives in Bangkok around 4:00 AM. The journey takes longer because the bus needs to cross the ferry, stop at Surat Thani Bus Terminal, and have a meal break. The bus leaves Surat Thani around 8:00 PM.
This concludes my review. During this trip, I didn't get wet at all. I love going to the beach, but I don't like getting wet, so I didn't get wet at all. 5555 This review might be a bit long (maybe not a bit), it's my first time reviewing, so if there are any mistakes, please forgive me. Anyway, you can give me suggestions and feedback. #Koh Samui
