Greetings, backpackers, travelers, solo adventurers, and group explorers! If you've clicked on this article, you're likely a seasoned hitchhiker, a curious novice, or simply someone who stumbled upon this piece. Regardless of your background, welcome!
I'm not a professional hitchhiker or a travel guru. I'm just someone who loves to travel, explore, and capture moments through my camera lens. While my photos may not be perfect, they hold memories that I cherish. But then again, if there's a place that I'm confident will stay etched in my mind and heart forever, I guess photos wouldn't be necessary, haha! Now, let's get to the heart of the matter: hitchhiking.
Pan is a person who travels in many different ways: by bus, train, plane, motorcycle, bicycle, etc. However, there is one method of transportation that she avoids unless absolutely necessary: hitchhiking.
The Allure of Hitchhiking: A Journey Beyond Transportation
This article delves into the world of hitchhiking, inviting readers to share their experiences with this unique mode of travel. While the focus lies on the act of hitching rides by the roadside, the broader theme encompasses all forms of adventurous backpacking journeys. The author poses a series of questions, prompting readers to contemplate the motivations behind hitchhiking. Is it a matter of financial constraints, a desire for self-expression, or simply a yearning for adventure? Ultimately, the article seeks to explore the allure of hitchhiking, delving into the reasons why individuals choose to embark on such journeys and the experiences they encounter along the way.
Pan has limited experience hitchhiking, with only a handful of trips under her belt. Each journey was motivated by a unique set of circumstances, as evidenced by these five reasons.
Reason 1: The tourist destination is not accessible by public transportation, and the individual does not have access to a personal vehicle.
Reason 2 I thought to myself that walking wouldn't be too bad, so I should save my money for the bus fare back to Bangkok. However, I ended up walking until it was almost dark, so I had no choice but to hitch a ride.
Reason 3: Desire to meet new people and exchange perspectives with strangers.
Reason 4: To capture unique perspectives that are inaccessible by car. Have you ever felt the urge to stop and take a picture while driving past a captivating scene? Pan does, which is why she prefers walking along the roadside.
Reason 5: No reason, just wanted to go, so I went. No plans, no reviews, no information at all. If there was a hired car, I would take it. If the car was gone, I would ask for a ride from the villagers. I would do whatever it takes to get to my destination, but I wouldn't cause any trouble to anyone.
Pan mentions the fifth reason, which is not causing trouble to anyone. There was a drama a long time ago when a man hitched a ride to Phu Thap Berk and recorded a video. However, he was criticized more than praised for his inappropriate behavior. I think you guys might remember that. So, Pan will write about the do's and don'ts of hitchhiking. Just in case someone really needs to hitch a ride, they can read it as a guideline.
Before traveling, it is essential to research transportation options. While using taxis or ride-sharing services may be convenient, consider alternative modes of transportation such as buses, trains, or motorbike rentals. This can provide a more immersive and cost-effective travel experience.
The best option is to hitch a ride in the back of a pickup truck. Avoid luxury vehicles and air conditioning. We are simply asking for a ride, so riding in the back of the truck is sufficient.
There was once an incident where a sedan stopped to pick me up. At that time, I was very grateful. They were a foreign family who stopped their car next to me and asked where I was going. They offered to give me a ride. Oh my god, I was so happy at that moment. I had been walking until my legs were about to bleed. When I got in, they quickly put their child in the front seat and cleared the back seat for me. I was so impressed by this. I didn't take a full picture of them, only this one. If they see this, will they remember me? If anyone knows them, please let me know.
3. Avoid making loud noises, whether you are alone or with friends. However, if you are sitting around with nothing to do, it is recommended that you take out your camera and take some pictures.
Pan prefers to travel with friends, usually by carpooling. If not alone, Pan prefers to travel with only two friends to avoid overwhelming the car owner. Pan also suggests that groups of three or more consider splitting the cost of a car rental to avoid inconveniencing others.
Avoid being overly frugal when asking for rides from others, as it can come across as selfish. I once made the mistake of being stingy and hitchhiked for free, even though I had enough money to pay for a ride. It caused inconvenience to others, and I still feel guilty about it.
Thank you very much. The car owner will be very happy to see that we are sincere and truly grateful. Don't forget to take a picture of the car owner and post it on Facebook to let the world know about their great kindness.
The final point is that Pan wants to emphasize that it's not cool or impressive to hitchhike frequently. If you want to travel independently, it's best to try to do it on your own.
That's all I can think of for now. If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to share them.
