Phuket in 2 Days and 1 Night: Discovering Street Art in the Old Town
Phuket, known as the "Pearl of the Andaman," is a top destination for international tourists visiting Thailand. While its beaches and seas are renowned for their beauty, Phuket also boasts stunning Sino-Portuguese architecture in its Old Town. This architectural style, influenced by the colonial era, blends Chinese and Portuguese elements. The Chinese influence stems from the Chinese traders who settled in the area, while the Portuguese influence dates back to the 16th century when Portuguese explorers arrived in Southeast Asia for trade and colonization. As a result, many cities in the region, including Penang and Malacca in Malaysia and Singapore, feature Sino-Portuguese architecture.

On On Hotel
To fully immerse yourself in the architectural charm of Phuket's Old Town, consider staying at the On On Hotel. Established in 1927, it is the island's first hotel and has been in operation ever since. In its early days, room rates started at 80 satang. The two-story building boasts Sino-Portuguese architecture. The ground floor houses a small gallery showcasing historical artifacts and photographs, while guest rooms are located on the second floor. Notably, the On On Hotel served as a filming location for the movie "The Beach," starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The room we stayed in was on the second floor and had a single bed. It was decorated with wooden furniture that matched the hotel's style. The windows could be opened to let in fresh air, but there was also air conditioning in the room.
The open-air common area on the 2nd floor provides a refreshing breeze and excellent ventilation. It features several seating areas where residents can enjoy a cup of coffee and the morning air.

Explore Sino-Portuguese architecture and Street Art
Sino-Portuguese architecture and street art coexist in Phuket's Old Town. Street art is integrated into the walls of buildings, offering a fun scavenger hunt while admiring the classic Sino-Portuguese architecture. Explore the streets of Phang Nga, Thalang, Dibuk, and Rommanee. Renting a motorbike, bicycle, or walking is feasible due to the short distances. Thalang Road is particularly stunning at night when illuminated. On Sunday evenings, a vibrant market attracts both Thai and international tourists.
The street art of King Rama IX in Phuket is a collaborative work of art created by the people of Phuket to express their condolences to the late King. There are also many other street art pieces in the area, created by artists, waiting for tourists to hunt for and take pictures of in Phuket's Old Town.
Food
Phuket's Old Town boasts a plethora of delectable culinary delights. However, there are certain signature dishes that are a must-try for any visitor. Missing out on these would be akin to not experiencing the true essence of Phuket's culinary scene.
Mi Ton Pho Mi Clock Tower: Hokkien fried noodles with egg is the signature dish of the restaurant, but there are many other dishes to try.
Ko Benz Khao Tom Haeng Phuket: The highlight is the dry rice porridge, with steamed rice topped with crispy pork, offal, and fried garlic, served with a flavorful broth.
Seafood: When visiting a coastal city, indulging in fresh and delicious seafood is a must. "Rawai Beach" is our top recommendation, where you'll find stalls selling fresh seafood at affordable prices. Simply choose your desired seafood and have it cooked to your liking by restaurants across the street for as low as ten baht per dish.
Macchiato House and Cakebox: Escape the heat and sip on a refreshing iced coffee on Thalang Road at this cafe adorned with dozens of portraits of world-renowned figures.

Phuket remains a popular tourist destination for both Thais and foreigners. If you're looking for beautiful beaches and the historic Phuket Old Town, it's a great option. For those visiting Phuket and wanting to experience something new besides the sea, one day is enough. However, for a more immersive experience, two days and one night are recommended to fully appreciate the blend of historical charm and modern art.
