Day 1: Allied War Cemetery (Don Rak) - Bridge over the River Kwai - Maida Resort, Kanchanaburi

After making arrangements with my family, the day of our trip arrived. We opted to take a van from Mo Chit, while my family drove from Ratchaburi and stopped to take photos at the "Allied War Cemetery (Don Rak)" while waiting for us.

The Allied War Cemetery, also known as the United Nations War Cemetery or the "English Cemetery" by the locals of Kanchanaburi, is a large cemetery covering an area of 17 acres. It contains the graves of 6,982 prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Death Railway. Of these, 300 prisoners of war died of cholera and were buried at the Nikkei Camp (approximately 15 kilometers before the Three Pagodas Pass). The remaining graves were relocated from various camps where prisoners of war were buried. The Thai government and the Allied forces agreed on August 24, 1954, to build these two cemeteries. The atmosphere in the cemetery is peaceful and serene, and the grounds are beautifully maintained. Each grave is marked with a brass plate bearing the name, age, and nationality of the deceased. The last line is a sorrowful inscription of mourning.

When we met at two o'clock in the afternoon, we contacted the resort and found out that the raft trip was cancelled because the water level was too low. So we decided to postpone the raft trip. Since we were not in a hurry, we took our parents and sister to visit the Bridge over the River Kwai. There were quite a lot of tourists on this holiday, but we still managed to find some good spots for photos.

"The Bridge on the River Kwai" is a significant historical site, serving as the most crucial bridge on the Death Railway. Constructed during World War II, the bridge was built by the Japanese army using approximately 61,700 Allied prisoners of war, including British, American, Australian, Dutch, and New Zealand soldiers. They were joined by a large number of Chinese, Vietnamese, Javanese, Malay, Thai, Burmese, and Indian laborers to construct the strategic railway line, which would provide a passage to Burma. As part of the route, a bridge was required to cross the River Kwai. The construction of the bridge and railway was fraught with hardship, wartime atrocities, and disease, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of prisoners of war.

The Bridge over the River Kwai was constructed in just one month using steel from Malaya. The bridge was built in sections, with an iron bridge in the middle and wooden ends and frames. The official opening ceremony took place on December 25, 1943. In November 1944, the bridge was bombed several times, causing it to break in the middle. After the war ended, the Thai government repaired the bridge with angle iron in 1946, making it usable again. Today, the bridge is recognized as a symbol of peace.

Then head to "Mida Resort Kanchanaburi" using Saeng Chuto Road (No. 323) and drive up to Lad Ya Road (No. 3199). The distance from the bridge over the River Kwai is approximately 33 kilometers. You will find the resort sign on the left-hand side of the road. If you are using Google Maps for navigation, please search for it in English for accuracy.

From this checkpoint, you need to travel another 1 kilometer to reach the resort entrance.

After parking the car, we walked to the lobby, which was truly magnificent.

Upon check-in, guests are greeted with a refreshing welcome drink of sweet chrysanthemum tea and a cool towel. The spacious lobby features comfortable sofa seating areas for relaxation.

Upon arrival, a bellboy will greet you with a golf cart to transport you and your luggage to your accommodation. For the first night, you will be staying in a spacious tent designed for two guests. These are not your ordinary tents; they are equipped with modern amenities such as a television, air conditioning, electricity, a refrigerator, a hairdryer, and comfortable beds. Additionally, a large beanbag chair is placed in the center of the tent, exceeding expectations. You have a variety of tents to choose from, all situated in a zone adjacent to the River Kwai. The tents are arranged in rows, starting from the grassy field and extending down to the riverbank.

To be honest, we have slept in tents many times, both with our own tents and with rentals. However, they were always small tents, just big enough to move around in while sitting or lying down. When we encountered this magnificent large tent, we were completely stunned and speechless. Another thing I want to mention is that the inside of the tent always has a fresh camphor scent. Camphor has many benefits, most notably preventing insects and reptiles from inhabiting the tent. It also helps prevent colds.

Additionally, each room will be equipped with a flashlight and slippers for your convenience.

The shared bathroom facilities for tent campers are exceptionally well-maintained. Separate sections are provided for men and women, with designated areas for toilets and showers. The shower stalls feature a coconut shell dipper and a water container, along with a hand-held showerhead and an overhead shower. Additionally, wall-mounted dispensers provide soap and shampoo for convenience.

The Allure of the River Kwai: Navigating the Waters of Adventure

The allure of the River Kwai lies not only in its scenic beauty but also in the unique experience of navigating its waters. However, understanding the river's flow is crucial for a safe and enjoyable journey.

Behind the resort, the mighty River Kwai flows, drawing its waters from the Srinakarin Dam. The dam releases water from morning until approximately 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM. Following the dam's closure, the water level in the River Kwai recedes significantly, exposing numerous rocks and creating treacherous conditions for rafting.

Venturing onto the river during low water levels poses significant risks. The shallow waters increase the likelihood of collisions with submerged rocks, potentially damaging the raft and endangering passengers. Moreover, sections of the riverbed may become completely dry, revealing sandbanks and piles of rocks, effectively halting further progress.

Therefore, it is essential to plan rafting excursions within the designated timeframe when the dam releases water, ensuring a safe and exhilarating experience on the River Kwai.

From the resort, you can see the mountain peaks in the distance. During the rainy and winter seasons, you can see clouds and mist floating around the mountain peaks. However, if you come during the winter, you will see the mist floating close to the water's surface.

This evening, we will be dining by the river. "River Romance" is a highlight of the resort, offering two distinct dining areas. The first is a spacious wooden platform on the lawn, featuring a central dining table surrounded by plush cushions and illuminated by a string of white lanterns. As the sun sets, the lanterns cast a romantic glow. The second area is a wooden deck extending over the river, offering a different ambiance with comfortable seating and dining tables illuminated by large spotlights. For an extra touch of romance, you can request a candlelit table setting.

Reservations can be made in advance. Please inform us the day before your arrival or let us know at the front desk before your meal time. Our staff will be available nearby to assist you. If you need any assistance or have any additional requests, rest assured that you will not have to wait long.

The ambiance was truly enchanting, immersing us in the pristine embrace of nature. Soothing melodies serenaded us, harmonizing with the soft, orange glow of the lamps, creating a dreamlike and romantic atmosphere.

The food was incredibly delicious, with every bite bursting with flavor. The ambiance was perfect, enhancing the dining experience. Sharing a meal with my family, surrounded by laughter and smiles, filled me with immense joy. As someone working far from home, this moment brought me immense happiness and a deep sense of gratitude.

Each table will be served with complimentary bottled water, which is provided by the resort itself.

The most popular drink on the menu is the Red Soda with Mixed Ingredients. It's packed with ingredients and has the perfect balance of sweetness and fizz. It's simply amazing! This drink can actually be mixed with alcohol, but if you're not a fan like me, you can order it without alcohol.

The family's dinner tonight consisted of jungle curry with catfish, herb-fried chicken, minced pork omelet, deep-fried sea bass with spicy sauce, and fried banana blossom. It's worth mentioning that everyone in our family knows how to cook, a tradition passed down from our uncles, aunts, grandparents, and great-grandparents. During this meal, the four of us, parents and children, unanimously agreed: "Delicious!" Even the minced pork omelet was extraordinary, with a perfectly crispy exterior, fluffy interior, and tender, flavorful minced pork. It was served with chili sauce, but we preferred it with fish sauce and chili, which we felt complemented it better.

Jungle curry with catfish, a rich and flavorful dish featuring aromatic curry paste, fresh vegetables, and tender, bite-sized pieces of catfish.

Crispy fried chicken wings with aromatic herbs. The wings are perfectly fried, achieving a crispy exterior and tender, juicy interior. The accompanying herbs, including lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves, add a fragrant and flavorful touch. The dish can be enjoyed with either a traditional Thai dipping sauce or a spicy chili sauce.

Deep-fried sea bass with spicy sauce. The sea bass is cut into pieces and coated in batter before being fried until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. There is no fishy smell at all. The spicy sauce is served separately in a cup and has a well-balanced flavor.

Another must-try dish is the shredded banana blossom fritters. This seemingly simple dish is surprisingly delicious. Before I could even take a picture, it was gone in a flash. The banana blossom is shredded into thick strips, coated in a light batter, and fried until the exterior is crispy. Inside, the banana blossom retains its soft texture. Paired with the sweet and savory dipping sauce, it's a flavor explosion. The meal concluded with fresh fruit. Why describe each dish in such detail? Because they were truly delicious. You can tell that the chef poured their heart into each dish, and they definitely won ours over.

Day 2:

  • Morning: M Café - Enjoy the resort's ambiance.
  • Lunch: Set lunch at Pin To.
  • Afternoon: Bamboo rafting.
  • Evening: Thai massage.
  • Dinner: The Terrace Restaurant.

Waking up at 6:00 am to the sound of my phone alarm, I thought I might see some low-lying fog this morning, as it had rained heavily the previous night. However, there was no fog to be seen, only the brown water of the Kwae Yai River. The dam must have recently released water, a mixture of rainwater and sediment that flowed down with the water, giving it a brown-orange color like sweet and creamy iced tea. So, I went back to sleep. When I woke up again at 7:30 am, I washed my face, brushed my teeth, and admired the morning view.

Join us for breakfast at "M Café Restaurant", a spacious venue accommodating up to 200 guests. Breakfast is served from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Breakfast Buffet Delights

The breakfast buffet here is extensive and offers a variety of options to satisfy every appetite. Guests can enjoy a selection of Thai and Western dishes, including:

  • Rice dishes: Congee, fried rice, and steamed rice.
  • Thai entrees: Two stir-fried dishes, one with vegetables and the other with chicken and ginger.
  • Western options: Spaghetti with tomato sauce, ham, sausages, grilled tomatoes, and a salad bar.
  • Fruits, breads, and cereals: A selection of fresh fruits, toasted bread, various jams, cereals, and Cocoa Krispies.
  • Beverages: Water, orange juice, bael fruit juice, and milk.

Additionally, an outdoor station offers a variety of egg dishes, including fried eggs and omelets. Freshly fried Chinese crullers (youtiao) are served with fragrant pandan custard and sweetened condensed milk. Guests can also enjoy traditional Thai beverages such as iced tea, coffee, and cocoa.

With such a wide array of choices, it's nearly impossible to sample everything the breakfast buffet has to offer.

Just this small portion has filled our bellies to the point where we need help finishing it! ^^”

My sister and I continued our walk around the resort, giving our parents some time alone. We peeked at the nearby swimming pool, watching others enjoy the water. We couldn't join them as we didn't bring our swimsuits. Oh well, just watching them brought us joy.

In the late morning, we moved to the Deluxe rooms in the M2 building. The rooms were spacious and well-appointed, each accommodating two guests. The king-size beds (6 feet) offered medium-firm comfort, and there was a sofa bed that could be converted into an extra bed. Amenities included a TV, refrigerator, hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers, and a full range of other essentials.

A Picnic-Style Lunch Option at Maida Resort Kanchanaburi

Maida Resort Kanchanaburi is introducing a new "Pin-to Set" lunch option, offering guests a convenient and scenic way to enjoy their midday meal. This picnic-style lunch allows guests to choose their preferred location within the resort, whether it be the lawn, by the river, or in a pavilion, creating a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience.

Initially, guests can select dishes from the existing menu at regular prices. However, in the near future, the resort plans to offer 3-4 pre-set Pin-to Sets with dedicated prices for added convenience. These sets will be available on the resort's website for easy ordering.

This innovative lunch option provides guests with greater flexibility and a unique dining experience, allowing them to savor their meal amidst the resort's beautiful surroundings.

Our lunch today was prepared by the resort and consisted of tofu and minced pork soup, stir-fried minced pork with wild pepper leaves, and a small portion of chili paste. The food was delicious as always, but unfortunately, we had eaten too much breakfast and were still full by lunchtime, so we couldn't finish our lunch. It was a shame because we wanted to eat everything and even take some home, but we forgot that we were staying another night, so we had to leave some out of courtesy. We chose to sit on the lawn under a large tree by the river, which was incredibly relaxing.

14:00 p.m. Embark on a bamboo raft adventure! Bamboo rafting is only possible when the water level in the river is at a medium level, not too high to cause flooding or too low to get stuck on rocks. Therefore, the rafting time is around 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. daily, before the upstream dam closes its water release. Life jackets are provided for your safety. Feel free to jump into the water and let the current carry you away. Boats or rafts will follow to pick you up. You can hop back on the raft whenever you wish. The rafting distance is approximately 3 kilometers, taking about 40-45 minutes. The journey ends at the bridge in Ban Tha Manao, where a songthaew (shared taxi) will be waiting to take you back to the resort. The bamboo rafting service costs only 200 baht per person.

In shallow sections where rocks protrude from the water, the boatman will wade and pull the raft instead of paddling.

We continued to enjoy the scenery, watching the birds and trees. The riverside view was filled with various species of trees on both sides. There were mountains to admire, and if we were lucky, we might see elephants and cows coming down to drink water. A water monitor lizard appeared not far away, showing off its beauty. The staff told us that there were pufferfish living in the water. Foreigners had been bitten before, but they were not common and not dangerous. They might just come up to tease and startle you. ^^

Upon reaching the Tha Manao Bridge, our journey will conclude, where a songthaew will be waiting to transport us.

Suddenly, heavy rain poured down. Fortunately, we reached our destination just in time, getting about 60% soaked. The downpour added to our joy, leaving us with smiles and laughter.

Today, it rained heavily, but fortunately, it started raining when we were about to reach the shore. We came back to take a shower and change clothes, and then took my mother for a massage. The resort has a spa area that offers Thai massage, foot massage, and a sauna room. If you want to use the service, you can contact the reception counter. The service fee is 500 baht/person for Thai massage and foot massage for 1 hour, and 200 baht/person for the sauna room for 1 hour. My mother said that the massage was very good. At first, the massage therapist massaged gently because she was afraid that my mother would be hurt. My mother told the massage therapist not to be afraid of hurting her. This time, the massage therapist really hit the right spots. After the massage for more than an hour, my father said that he wanted his legs to be massaged too. The massage therapist followed his request, but it didn't take long because my father wasn't seriously injured.

On the second evening of our trip, we had dinner at The Terrace restaurant, which can accommodate up to 200 guests. Due to heavy rain in the afternoon that continued into the evening, the riverside area was too wet to sit in, so we had the opportunity to dine here instead.

Today's Menu: A Culinary Journey

The day's culinary journey began with a delightful stir-fried minced pork omelet, a repeat from the previous day's menu that proved irresistible. The broccoli and shrimp stir-fry offered a harmonious blend of flavors, with perfectly cooked, crisp vegetables and succulent, bouncy shrimp.

The highlight of the meal, however, was the wild boar panaeng curry. The wild boar's distinctive characteristic, its slightly crispier fat compared to regular pork, was evident in this dish. While wild boar typically has slightly tougher skin, this preparation boasted a remarkably tender texture. The rich, well-balanced flavors, with a subtle hint of spice, perfectly complemented our preference for spicy dishes. Overall, this dish was a resounding success.

To satisfy our sweet cravings, we indulged in two desserts: a classic banana split and a fried banana with vanilla ice cream. Both options provided a delightful end to a satisfying meal.

The original text is empty. Please provide the text you want me to translate.

On the way back to our room, we took a detour to take some photos at the Mida Ballroom. It's the largest banquet and conference hall in the resort, with a capacity of 500-1,000 people. The exterior is beautifully decorated and looks incredibly spacious. We had a lot of fun taking photos together.

Day 3: Breakfast at M Café - Giant Rain Tree - Return Trip

Waking up to the view from the room, I saw a green lawn, trees, a river, and a mountain peak with a light mist. It was beautiful. The atmosphere was great, and it was very refreshing.

Breakfast was served at the "M Café" as usual. Some of the menu items were slightly different, but it was still a large buffet. We tried a little bit of everything to sample as many dishes as possible. Before we could try everything, we were already full. We wanted to eat more, but we couldn't. Our stomachs were full.

We took a walk to aid digestion, enjoying the lush and refreshing atmosphere of the resort. The air was clean and invigorating, allowing us to breathe deeply without needing to travel far or embark on a challenging trek. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery, we savored delicious meals and spent quality time together as a family. Witnessing the frequent smiles on my parents' faces brought immense joy and contentment.

After returning to the room to rest, we prepared to check out and head back home. I was worried about the dogs at home because my mother had told me to feed them well before we left and to leave out a full bowl of dry food and water. She said they would have to manage on their own for three days. At first, I laughed, but then I couldn't help but feel sorry for them. Our dogs are fierce and mixed-breed, so they are quite large. We couldn't leave them with a pet sitter, and no one could go in to check on them. They could only be watched from a distance.

After checking out, we continued our journey to the "Giant Rain Tree". We had heard and seen news about it for a long time, but we had never been there to see it for ourselves. So this time, we decided to go together. On the way, my father said, "How big can it be? Is it as big as the tree at our temple?" ... Ah.... When we finally saw the actual tree, it was huge! It was truly as big as its reputation! So I tried to find some information about it and learned that "It is more than 100 years old, 10 people can hug its circumference, the average radius of its crown is 25.87 meters, the diameter of its shade is about 51.75 meters, its height from the ground to the top is 20 meters, and the area of its crown is about 1 rai, 2 ngan, 4 wa." Just reading this, you might not be able to imagine how big and magnificent the actual tree is. Why is it that just one tree can become a tourist attraction that everyone wants to see? You have to see it with your own eyes, like us, to understand the question. The more I look at it, the more I am fascinated by the charm of nature. It makes me want to take care of many trees so that they can grow and thrive for hundreds of years like this. I will go back and buy some trees to plant at home so that they can become big trees like this for my children and grandchildren. I will teach my children and grandchildren to love trees and nature, not to destroy them, but to help create and preserve them.

However, in addition to returning to plant trees and caring for existing ones, I must first find a soulmate before having children and grandchildren to teach. Haha.

Everyone was reluctant to leave, with a shared desire to stay at Maida Resort. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful, with large trees scattered throughout the property and the resort nestled alongside the River Kwai. Maida Resort truly embodies a harmonious coexistence with nature. Everywhere you look, you're surrounded by the lush greenery of trees and foliage.

Let's explore the various aspects of Maida Resort Kanchanaburi, delving into the reasons why it has captivated our hearts and ignited our desire to prolong our stay. We will embark on a journey to uncover the resort's exceptional qualities, painting a vivid picture of its allure.

Maida Resort Kanchanaburi covers an area of 50 rai and is located next to the Kwai Yai River. The current owner of the resort purchased part of the land from the previous owner approximately 11 years ago. This is evident from the resort entrance on Lad Ya Road. Upon turning into the entrance, one encounters the area of the previous owner, which is filled with various large trees and several townhouses. The actual resort entrance is located halfway through this area. For the first three years, the property operated as the original accommodation, "Baan Rom Mai," before transitioning to Maida Resort Kanchanaburi eight years ago.

This is a simple HTML code snippet containing a line break (<br />) and a horizontal rule (<hr />).

Here's the breakdown:

  • <br />: This tag inserts a line break, forcing the text to start on a new line.
