First Road Trip: Two Girls, a Bit Clumsy, and a Touch Lost
Our first road trip, just the two of us girls, a bit clumsy and prone to getting lost.
Amidst the rain and a hint of winter chill, we embarked on a nearly 3-hour journey from Bangkok to Rayong. One of us braved the rain behind the wheel, while the other navigated using Google Maps.
It wouldn't have been a long drive if not for the heavy downpour. But then again, every journey throws unexpected curveballs.
This trip was no different.
After the rain subsided, we were greeted by a magnificent rainbow, a full arc spanning the sea. It was an extraordinary start to our rainy season trip to Rayong.
Rayong: Beyond the Beaches
While Rayong's stunning coastline is undeniably captivating, this charming seaside town nestled amidst mountains holds hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
This itinerary is perfect for a leisurely road trip with friends, offering a delightful escape without the stress of long drives or exhausting activities.
Prepare to embark on a journey filled with scenic beauty, delightful experiences, and unforgettable memories.
Sure! The most important tool is a mobile phone.
Because without Google Maps and GPS signals, we would definitely get lost.
We planned the coordinates last night to save as much time as possible.
Our first destination is "Phu Nang Yong Cafe".
A coffee shop in Ban Chang that the locals say is a must-visit.
Set the Google Maps coordinates.
And then follow the GPS all the way.
The road to the shop runs parallel to the mountain, which is very beautiful.
Unable to resist the allure of the empty road, we pulled over to capture the moment.
01 - Phunang Yong Cafe
A cafe nestled in the mountains of Rayong province.
Tambon Samnak Thon, Ban Chang District, Rayong

Arriving at the restaurant, we were famished and ready to indulge in their signature dishes. We ordered the smoked duck pizza, battered hearts of palm, and green curry spaghetti.
The highlight of this place is the panoramic mountain view, perfect for a relaxing meal with a view. However, we visited during the midday sun, forcing us to seek refuge from the heat inside the cafe. We missed out on the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor seating with a view, but we'll definitely be back for another visit.
From Phunang Yong at Ban Chang, we continued into the city to the next coordinates:
Phra Samut Chedi and Raiyong Restaurant on Yomjinda Road, which are not far apart.
02 Phra Samut Chedi Shrine in the Middle of the Water
Pak Nam Subdistrict, Mueang Rayong District, Rayong

The Phra Samut Chedi, a bell-shaped stupa standing approximately 10 meters tall, is situated on an island in the middle of the Rayong River. Surrounded by a vast mangrove forest and embraced by the river's waters, the stupa stands as a serene landmark amidst the natural beauty.
03 ร้าน ราย็อง
Address: ถนนยมจินดา, ตำบลท่าประดู่ อำเภอเมืองระยอง จังหวัดระยอง

#Raiyong is a long-standing milk and roti shop on Yomchinda Road, having been open for decades.
From a humble pushcart, it has expanded to two adjoining shops.
The original wooden shop is a particular favorite, as it still displays the original roti cart and other pioneering equipment, creating a classic atmosphere.

The new shop across the street in the same alley is also beautiful and retains its classic style.
After eating, they went out to play in the dirt on Yomjinda Road.

Our next stop is the final destination for today:

"Thung Prong Thong": An Unforgettable Ecotourism Destination
"Thung Prong Thong" stands as a remarkable ecotourism destination, captivating visitors with its breathtaking beauty. A must-visit for anyone exploring Rayong Province, this natural wonder promises an unforgettable experience.
I confess that I got lost at this location. 555
When we arrived at Pak Nam Prasae, we drove around in circles in the community. We asked for directions from the locals, and they told us that the coordinates for #Thung Prong Thong in Google Maps had led many people astray. (Oh no! What a shame!)
In the end, a kind uncle took us to the parking lot and acted as our guide throughout the trip.
I recommend that you drive to this location, park your car in the parking lot, and then hire a sidecar from the uncles and aunts of Ban Prasae to take you around. It's the most convenient way to get around.
After finishing at Thung Prong Thong, the uncle took us to the scenic viewpoint at Prasae Sin Bridge.
06 Saphan Prasaesin Bridge
This bridge offers stunning views of the Prasaesin River, from the bridge itself to the surrounding landscapes on both sides. The long bridge is a popular spot for photographers, who capture the scenic beauty along the way.
On one side, you'll find lush mangrove forests and the charming riverside community of Ban Prasaes. The other side boasts the bustling fishing port of Tha Ruea and the mouth of the Prasaes River.
07 Old Town Communities Along the Prasae River
The Old Village of Prasae Riverbank: A Historical Fishing Community
The Old Village of Prasae Riverbank is a historical community dating back to the Ayutthaya period. It boasts a large fishing port where locals practice traditional fishing methods, raising grouper and fish in cages. The village is now evolving into a community-based tourist destination. Its centuries-old wooden houses have been transformed into homestays, offering visitors an immersive experience in the local way of life at the mouth of the Prasae River.
HTMS Prasae, a decommissioned warship, at Black Sand Beach
The decommissioned warship was requested by the villagers from the authorities to be placed as a historical landmark and a tourist attraction for the community.
Here, we can walk up to the warship to see the details of the ship itself.
09 Shrine of Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak
A sacred landmark of Prachuap Khiri Khan, revered by the local community. Located on the banks of the Prachuap River.
The shrine houses a life-size bronze statue of His Royal Highness Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse, the Father of the Royal Thai Navy.
It is open to the public for paying respects from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
10 Sunthorn Phu Monument
A symbol of Klaeng District and Rayong Province.

The trip is over, and it's time to drive back to Bangkok. It was a relaxing road trip, and I got a lot of great photos. I also have many good memories of Rayong. Rayong is not just beautiful beaches.
