Nakhon Si Thammarat: A Must-Visit City
Nakhon Si Thammarat is a city that should not be missed. It boasts a wealth of attractions, from delicious food to stunning natural landscapes, ancient temples, and historical sites. Join us on a journey through this captivating city, guided by a local.
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan
This magnificent temple is a must-see in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Its towering chedi, intricate carvings, and serene atmosphere offer a glimpse into the city's rich cultural heritage.
The Twin Temples: A Must-See for Nakhon Si Thammarat Residents
The Twin Temples, a landmark of Nakhon Si Thammarat, are a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. While undergoing renovations during our visit, their beauty remained undiminished.
The interior offers a designated space for devotees to light incense, candles, and place flowers in reverence of the sacred relic. Encircling the main stupa are numerous smaller stupas, while rows of resplendent golden Buddha statues adorn the surroundings.
I remember when I was a child, I used to go to the temple and climb to the top. I used this beautiful staircase to go up (I hope we can climb it again after the renovation).
The Residence of Khun Ratchawut Wichan
This phrase translates to "The Residence of Khun Ratchawut Wichan" in English.
Note:
- "Khun" is a Thai honorific title, similar to "Mr." or "Ms."
- "Ratchawut Wichan" is likely the name of the individual associated with the residence.
- Without further context, it is difficult to determine the exact nature or significance of this residence.
This house is a hip-roofed house of Khun Ratchawut Wicharn, the district officer of Klai during the reign of King Rama VI. It is still in very good condition and is very beautiful. Inside, there is a display of the history of Khun Ratchawut for us to read.
The Khun's house is located near Wat Phra That. Just cross the road and walk a little to the right, and you will arrive.
City Pillar Shrine
Located near the front field of the city (when I was a child, I had to pass it every day on my way to school), the city pillar shrine is another place that is the heart of the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Sri Dharmaraj Public Park
This area was previously a prison. When the provincial government relocated the prison to another location, the area was developed into the public park that it is today.
Old City Wall
Adjacent to Sri Dharmarajasoke Public Park is the double-layered ancient city wall of Nakhon Si Thammarat, dating back to the era of warfare. While the city boasts several sections of the old city wall, the most well-preserved portion is located at Sri Dharmarajasoke Public Park.
Ratchadamnoen Road
The main roads of Nakhon Si Thammarat city feature streetlights designed in the shape of the 12 zodiac animals, which are the symbol of the province. Additionally, major intersections boast pedestrian bridges adorned with decorations that reflect the unique characteristics of the surrounding communities.
Phutthamonthon Road
A popular gathering spot for fitness enthusiasts, this road offers stunning views and proximity to a public park, attracting a multitude of runners and cyclists.
This road runs alongside the railway tracks, offering stunning views of the sunset as trains pass by.
Phra That Market
Every Saturday evening, a market is held in front of the Phra That temple, showcasing the food, art, and performances of the local people. The market offers a wide variety of dishes, from rare ancient recipes to popular local favorites. There are also performances by students and members of various organizations, providing a diverse and entertaining experience. Additionally, the market features traditional southern arts and crafts, such as shadow puppetry, batik fabric, tie-dye fabric, and nielloware, which visitors can admire and purchase. (Apologies for the lack of food photos, as I devoured everything before I could take any!)
Pak Phanang District
Another coastal district with beautiful windmills. The market is full of delicious food (but as always, the delicious food disappears quickly, so there are no pictures, haha).
