"Baan Tha Khan Thong Homestay": A Cultural Immersion Experience
Cocial's Journey to Ban Saew Community, Chiang Rai
More than just a homestay, "Baan Tha Khan Thong" offers a profound immersion into the heart of Thai culture and traditions.
A Shift in Perspective
Previously, I viewed community tourism as a mere escape from routine, a way to unwind and experience a different environment. However, my participation in the COCIAL One Night Stay with Locals competition, organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, has completely transformed my perspective.
Beyond the Ordinary
Unlike conventional homestays or hotels, "Baan Tha Khan Thong" provides an authentic glimpse into the local way of life. It's not just about accommodation; it's about connecting with the community, embracing their customs, and gaining a deeper understanding of their rich heritage.
Homestay at Ban Tha Khan Thong, Chiang Rai
Ban Tha Khan Thong in Chiang Rai is a unique community unlike any other. Here, visitors can experience authentic village life, immersing themselves in the local culture. Guests can stay overnight in homestays, participate in daily activities, and share meals with their hosts and fellow villagers. The experience offers a glimpse into the local way of life, showcasing the warmth and hospitality of the community.
The homestay program provides an opportunity to witness the stunning scenery of the Mekong River and the neighboring Laotian landscape. It's a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding environment.
Importantly, I got to know the unique Isan Lanna community, unlike any other. Staying in a homestay felt like sleeping in my own home, like returning home to the countryside. It made me think of my family, my father, and my mother.
For the **Ban Tha Khan Thong community**, it's not just about homestays or enjoying the atmosphere. It's about participating in the daily activities of the community and learning things you've never encountered before.
Come and **visit the community** and you'll discover the **charm of Isan Lanna on the banks of the Mekong**. There's so much to explore, from the sounds of the khaen, the birds, and the water in the Mekong River. It's a truly relaxing experience.
Watch the video to discover how the Ban Tha Khan Thong community is more than just a community in your mind.
Each homestay is unique, and the one I stayed in today is a two-story antique house with a wooden upper floor. It is still a house with the community's unique character. Importantly, the arrangement and decoration are comparable to those of a hotel. I secretly admire the swans made from towels; they are beautiful. Some five-star hotels don't even have them.
A leisurely ride on an e-tuk-tuk through the charming village of Tha Khan Thong, taking in the breathtaking scenery along the Mekong River, is an experience that will leave you feeling utterly blissful. The gentle breeze caressing your face as you listen to the enchanting sounds of the khaen, a traditional Lao instrument, creates a truly harmonious and unforgettable moment.
One-stop shop for everything you need. The community also offers traditional Thai massage and herbal steam rooms. Those who love health can also use the service. The herbal steam room has a very fragrant herbal box.
Enjoy brown rice water and learn the ancient art of rice milling.
Visitors to this area will notice that the locals wear sarongs and that sarongs are used as decorations in various parts of the homestays. This indicates that this is an Isan Lanna community. Initially, I was surprised that the residents of Tha Khan Thong, Chiang Rai, which is located in the north, speak the Isan language. This is because the majority of the residents here originally came from the northeastern region of Thailand, also known as Isan.
Fresh fruits from the garden are available for picking and consumption. The availability of fruits varies depending on the season. Currently, passion fruit, longan, and rambutan are in season. Longan and rambutan are commonly grown in almost every household. The fruits are naturally sweet and chemical-free.
During the lunch break, we enjoyed a traditional Thai meal served on a "khantoke" (a raised platform with small tables). We had the opportunity to eat with local villagers and savor the delicious home-cooked dishes. The experience provided a valuable opportunity to exchange stories and learn about their way of life.
As a child of rice farmers, I have never actually worked in the rice fields. The last time I remember doing so was about 10 years ago. This time, I was very happy to be able to participate in rice planting again. I was able to help the villagers and learn how to plant rice again. Plus, I got to listen to the sound of the "khaen" and "lam" from my parents, which made me very happy. It made me think about the past, about home, and about my childhood when my parents took me to plant rice, even though I cried and didn't want to go at the time. Hehe.
Mud Slide Fun in the Rainy Season
One of the most popular activities during the rainy season is mud sliding. If you're visiting with family or friends, especially those with children, mud sliding is a must-try. It's a guaranteed blast!
As dusk falls, take a boat ride on the Mekong River and watch the sunset. Listen to the sound of the water and the boat, and take in the atmosphere. Learn about the history of the Mekong River and the Ban Tha Khan Thong village.
Taste the grilled pork "Moo Ping Ta Pun" with its spicy dipping sauce and invigorating herbal drinks - the highlight of this trip! The pork is incredibly delicious.
After sunset, enjoy a delicious dinner and a traditional "mat baan" ceremony, followed by fun group activities. Savor the meal while listening to the enchanting sounds of the "khaen" (a traditional Thai instrument) and witness the genuine smiles of the local people.
