Trip 2/2018

Nan, Thailand

"Nan…or not?" This question popped into my head several months ago, and it was these two words that led us back to Nan once again. This was our second trip to Nan.

We opted for an off-season trip, as Nan Province typically experiences a surge in tourist arrivals during the rice-growing season (approximately August-September). However, our visit confirmed that "Nan is truly a year-round destination."

"Mushroom Farm Baan Huanaam" (Baan Pha Ko, Nam Koon)

This restaurant, located in Baan Pha Ko, Nam Koon, served as our lunch destination. Their menu features a variety of delectable dishes made with premium mushrooms as the star ingredient. Some highlights include:

  • Spicy Isaan Mushroom Salad: A flavorful and refreshing salad featuring a medley of mushrooms tossed in a tangy Isaan dressing.
  • Fried Mushroom Som Tum: A twist on the classic papaya salad, featuring crispy fried mushrooms adding a delightful textural contrast.
  • Mushroom and Glass Noodle Casserole: A comforting and savory dish with tender mushrooms and glass noodles baked in a rich sauce.
  • Vegetable Salad with Wild Betel Leaves: A refreshing and healthy salad with a unique twist, featuring the aromatic wild betel leaves.
  • Rice with Three Mushroom Chili Paste: A flavorful and aromatic rice dish served with a spicy chili paste made with three different types of mushrooms.
  • Mushroom Tom Yum Soup: A classic Thai soup with a rich and flavorful broth, featuring a variety of mushrooms for added depth and texture.

This restaurant offers a unique and delicious dining experience for those seeking to explore the culinary possibilities of mushrooms.

Baan Hua Nam Mushroom Farm offers a restaurant and beverage service, with most menus featuring mushrooms in their preparation. The most popular menu item, which almost every table orders, is "mushroom pizza." However, this time we didn't order it because we were overwhelmed by the many other dishes we ordered (we were afraid we wouldn't be able to finish everything!).

This restaurant is located in Pua District, Nan Province. In addition to being a restaurant, it also offers private accommodation with views of the rice fields. If you come to Pua, be sure to try the food or stay at this mushroom farm.

Our accommodation for the night, "Tub Na Homestay," is a homestay by the rice field. The front view is a mountain view, which is quite beautiful. If it were during the rice-growing season, the atmosphere would be even better. The interior of the room offers a clear view of the outside.

The period during which we stayed (May) was not yet the rice-growing season, so there weren't many green views to see. As I mentioned earlier, we were traveling during the off-season. However, the atmosphere at this time made us feel very relaxed and happy.

With nothing to do, I wandered around the homestay, where bamboo bridges connected everything. I found many spots to take photos as I pleased.

We booked a room with a "Khantoke" dinner. The "Nam Prik Num" was incredibly spicy! It was served with sticky rice, omelets, grilled fish wrapped in banana leaves, and fresh vegetables. We enjoyed the meal while watching the sunset.

Full and happy - Bathe - Sleep ^ ^ The outside temperature should be 30 degrees, but we sleep comfortably with the air conditioner on. Late at night, I woke up to go to the bathroom and opened the curtain to see that it was very quiet outside.

We woke up early to breathe in the fresh air. There were no other guests awake yet. The morning air was very good.

This corner is our favorite because the view behind it is of mountains and cornfields, which brings us closer to nature.

During the off-season, Tub Na Homestay cultivates beautiful flowers, transforming the landscape into a vibrant oasis. This ensures that the homestay remains aesthetically pleasing regardless of the season.

The room we stayed in was called "Chom Doi Room" and cost 1,600 baht (for 2 people). We added a Khantoke dinner for 200 baht per person (as we do not eat land animals, we only ordered fish, eggs, and vegetables. The regular Khantoke set includes Hang Lay Curry, Kua Laab, Sai Oua, etc.).

Before leaving Pua, we stopped by "Baan Tai Lue Coffee Shop" at Lamduan Weaving Shop for some Khao Soi - Khao Soi Nam Ngiao. We also quenched our thirst with some lime soda before returning our rented motorbike in Pua district.

We returned the rental motorbike and took a shared taxi from Pua to Nan city (approximately 2 hours). It rained lightly along the way.

"Phumin Temple," located near the Nan National Museum, attracts a large number of tourists who come to pay their respects.

This corner, "Whispering Love to the World," is truly a must-capture spot. Everyone takes photos here.

This evening, we tried the "Huen Hom Restaurant" and the food was delicious. We ordered 2-3 dishes, including a set of northern Thai chili dip, mushroom curry, and herb-marinated fish salad (the latter was truly delicious).

On our second night in Nan, we stayed at "Baan Baan Nan Nan Library and Guesthouse". We booked it on Facebook for 1,000 baht per night (Room 1 G. with private bathroom/fan).

The tie-dye cotton curtains by the window create a nostalgic atmosphere.

We slept soundly last night despite the heavy rain (a bit disappointed that we couldn't visit the walking street because of the rain T T). The atmosphere inside the room felt like we were transported back in time. The wooden house and the antique furniture perfectly complement each other.

"Baan Baan Nan Nan Library & Guesthouse": A Home Away from Home

This charming two-story wooden house serves as a guesthouse, café, bookstore, and library, offering a unique and immersive experience for visitors. Staying at "Baan Baan Nan Nan" feels like visiting the home of a beloved relative, as guests share the same space as the owners. For those seeking an authentic homestay experience, this guesthouse provides a warm and welcoming environment.

Early Morning Visit to Wat Phra That Khao Noi and Nine Temples in Nan City

Waking up early, we headed to Wat Phra That Khao Noi to enjoy the view of Nan city. The morning crowd was thin, allowing us to take photos at our leisure. Afterwards, we embarked on a pilgrimage to nine temples within Nan city, successfully completing our goal of visiting all nine.

We then found accommodation near the Nan Provincial Transport Station, "Nan Sabai Dee," for 500 baht per night (only). It included air conditioning, a water heater, and breakfast. However, we did not stay overnight because we only wanted a room near the transport station and to take a shower before boarding the bus back this evening.

This trip allowed us to experience nature, with breathtaking mountain views stretching as far as the eye can see. We stayed in a homestay, rode the bus, and savored delicious local dishes, such as "khao soi" and "khanom jeen nam ngiao" at the Tai Lue village. Mushroom lovers should not miss the delectable mushroom dishes at the Baan Huay Nam mushroom farm.

As mentioned earlier, we opted for a budget-friendly travel experience. We took a bus to Pua District and rented a motorbike to explore the area. The next day, we took a shared taxi from Pua to the city center.

((( See? Traveling in Nan is easy, even without a car. )))

Thank you for following the "NAN...สบายดีนะแกร" review. There are many more places to explore, so stay tuned for more reviews.

#ดีต่อใจ Thank you.
