Journey to the Chiew Larn Wildlife Sanctuary

The journey to the Chiew Larn Wildlife Sanctuary in Ban Na Subdistrict, Kaeng Krachan District, began with a van ride. We had contacted the sanctuary in advance to request permission to hike to the waterfall. Upon arrival, we changed into hiking clothes and packed essential items into our backpacks. Be warned, after a short walk, you might feel tempted to throw everything away! At this point, the park rangers distributed lunch packets for our midday meal during the hike.

After a short walk, we arrived at a waterfall with crystal-clear water. The path ahead required us to walk alongside and across the waterfall. Challenges encountered during this section included the sharp and slippery rocks. The rocks were extremely sharp and slippery, so it is highly recommended to exercise extreme caution.

The trail we walked along was accompanied by a refreshing stream of crystal-clear water. The temperature was pleasantly cool, and there was a constant threat of rain, as Ranong is known for its abundant rainfall. During our trek, we encountered a few slips and falls, along with some accidental dips in the water, which added to the overall enjoyment and helped to alleviate the fatigue. After a while, the park ranger instructed us to take a break. We eagerly dropped our heavy backpacks, feeling a sense of relief. After a short rest, the ranger signaled us to continue our journey.

After walking for a while, we checked our watches and it was around noon. The officers allowed us to take a break to eat the lunch that they had given us in the morning. We quickly unwrapped our lunch and ate it quickly because we were hungry. Haha! The best part was that we got to eat lunch in the forest, and we even sat by a beautiful waterfall with crystal-clear water. It was a level ten experience! Haha! Our lunch consisted of sticky rice with fried chicken or pork. After we finished eating, we got ready to continue our journey. The officers told us that we were close to our resting point.

Crossing the waterfall, one must be careful of the strong current and slippery rocks, especially in deep areas. Park rangers will assist you in crossing. After a short walk, you will reach the campsite, which consists of hammocks due to limited space. The park provides sturdy hammock frames, and you are responsible for setting up your hammock and flysheet. The campsite is located next to a waterfall, where you can swim and drink the clean water.

Upon arriving at our camp, the staff instructed us to tie our hammocks and arrange our belongings. We were then led on a hike to the La-ang Daeng Rainbow Waterfall. The trek from the camp to the waterfall takes approximately an hour and involves a steep uphill climb. We arrived at the camp around 1:00 PM, so we had some time to spare before continuing our hike. As we ascended towards the waterfall, it began to rain. We ended up walking in the rain, which was quite an experience!

After a long and arduous trek, we finally arrived at the breathtaking Rainbow Waterfall, aptly named for the shimmering mist that creates a rainbow effect as the water cascades down the rocks. The name change from its original moniker, "Moei Cave Waterfall," reflects the enchanting beauty of this natural wonder. The journey was well worth the effort, as the stunning vista before us compensated for the grueling hike. We learned from the park rangers that the waterfall's name was changed to enhance its allure, as the cascading water creates a mesmerizing spray that refracts sunlight into a vibrant rainbow. After capturing the picturesque scene in our memories and cameras, we contentedly made our way back to camp.

Upon returning to camp, we showered and changed out of our wet clothes, preparing for the dinner that the staff had prepared for us upon our return from the waterfall. The meal consisted of dishes made with local ingredients, including stir-fried bai liang with egg, chili paste with fresh vegetables, fried fish, boiled chicken, chicken curry, and sweet green bean soup with coconut milk. It was a truly delicious meal, offering a genuine taste of southern Thai cuisine.

After dinner, we were all exhausted and tired, so we went to our hammocks to rest. We needed to get a good night's sleep to prepare for our journey back the next day. The park rangers slept around our group, which made us feel very safe.

The morning air was filled with the scent of wood smoke from the campfire lit by the park rangers. I woke up and went outside to capture the stunning views surrounding the camp. I washed my face, brushed my teeth, and enjoyed a hot cup of coffee amidst the lush greenery and the sound of the cascading waterfall.

The aroma of coffee in the fresh morning air is truly delightful. Sometimes, I find myself wishing to pause time and savor these moments forever. The fleeting nature of happiness can be disheartening, but I strive to immerse myself in the beauty of nature as much as possible.

The party must come to an end. The officers asked us to pack our belongings and prepare to leave. We still wanted to stay, but what could we do? The officers were much faster than us. They finished packing a long time ago and sat down to wait for us. Haha, we were the slowest.
