Established in 1993, the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden spans approximately 6,500 rai on the edge of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province. It serves as a repository for Thai plant species, promoting conservation, propagation, research, and knowledge dissemination on environmental conservation and the nation's rich biodiversity. Additionally, the garden functions as an educational and ecotourism hub.
In 1994, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit graciously granted permission for the first international botanical garden in Thailand to be named "Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden".
Canopy Walk: A Thrilling Experience Above the Trees
The first stop on our journey was the Canopy Walk, a nature trail suspended high above the forest floor. This sturdy steel structure, painted in a muted green that blends seamlessly with the surrounding foliage, provided a thrilling experience for even the most height-averse among us. Secured by waist-high railings along its entire 500-meter length, the walkway offered breathtaking panoramic views of the mountain range from 20 meters above the ground. During the winter months, a mesmerizing sea of fog would often envelop the treetops, creating a truly magical spectacle.
Enjoy a series of stunning portraits of Nunu, who takes us on a nature walk through the Canopy Walk. Thank you to our model.
From a distance, at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level, the mountain range offers a panoramic view. A 1.5-meter-high guardrail runs along the entire walkway.
Rare forest tree species that are difficult to find in their natural habitat, at the general ground level.
The wooden building, which serves as the starting point of the walkway and must be accessed from the back, houses a souvenir shop. Images of the shop will be provided later.
The building houses a wide selection of souvenirs for purchase.
This botanical garden houses the largest glasshouse complex in Thailand, showcasing a diverse collection of rare and endangered plants from various ecosystems. The complex features greenhouses that mimic the natural habitats of the plants, allowing visitors to experience them year-round. The first set of greenhouses focuses on arid plants, including cacti.
This building houses a diverse collection of cacti from around the world, including unusual specimens like the large, round cactus pictured above, known as "Thang Thong" or, humorously, "Mother-in-law's Chair," which originates from the Americas.
The next building is the Water Plants Pavilion, which showcases aquatic plants from both Thailand and abroad. Of particular interest is the giant water lily, which has the largest leaves in the world and can even support the weight of a person.
The Maidenhair Fern, with its delicate fronds resembling tiny children clinging to their mother at the tips of the leaves, is aptly named for this characteristic.
The next group is an orchid and fern house, which blooms beautifully throughout the year. The landscape is designed to mimic nature, allowing tourists to stroll through the cool atmosphere inside the greenhouse.
The Last Greenhouse: A Tropical Paradise
This final greenhouse is the largest of the complex, showcasing endemic and rare plant species from the southern region. The environment is meticulously designed to mimic a humid rainforest, with an automated misting system maintaining high humidity throughout. The landscape features a stunning waterfall and elevated walkways, allowing visitors to admire the diverse plant life from a unique perspective, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience.
The Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden also features several other exhibition buildings. The images I have shared here represent only half of what the garden has to offer. On future visits, I hope to present more interesting stories from this remarkable place.
