Into The Wild × Khiri Wong Kot (Khiri Maze)

Ride an oxcart through the stream at Khiri Wong Kot.

Continuing from our previous article, our next destination is not far from Loei province. This community is...Khiriwongkot Village in Udon Thani Province, another village in the 1nightstaywithlocals project that we would like to recommend today.

Khiriwongkot is a village located in the northernmost part of Udon Thani province, bordering Loei and Nong Khai provinces. This community is surrounded by mountains and its residents live in harmony with nature. A small stream flows through the village, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Before arriving, we contacted Mr. Aoi, the village elder, a week in advance (due to the village's popularity). Mr. Aoi would be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of our trip.

We met at the Ban Kiriwongkot Tourist Center to prepare for the first activity of the day: riding an e-taek through the Huay Nam Huay stream to reach the Huay Chang Phluai waterfall. The atmosphere and journey were as enjoyable and beautiful as this.

Along the way, we stopped to soak our feet in the water, a refreshing change of pace. The water here is crystal clear, with fish swimming everywhere. The bumpy and jarring path is perfect for blasting music and dancing along to the beat. After a short journey down the stream, we arrived at our destination: Huai Chang Phluai Waterfall. This lush forest, reminiscent of a blue lagoon, offers endless opportunities for stunning photos.

Amidst the hazy atmosphere, a tantalizing aroma wafted through the air. Curiosity piqued, we followed the scent to discover Chef Aoy, the culinary maestro of Kiree Wongkot, meticulously grilling legendary chicken wings. Chef Aoy's meticulous approach involves starting the grilling process only upon our arrival, ensuring we savor the delectable flavors of freshly cooked, piping-hot food. This dedication results in a culinary masterpiece that tantalizes the taste buds.

A feast of grilled chicken, spicy papaya salad, grilled fish, sticky rice, and banana stem curry awaited us, served in traditional local containers. Within 30 minutes, the food vanished, a testament to our ravenous hunger. The delicious meal left us completely satisfied, and those who desired could indulge in unlimited refills. As the afternoon wore on, drowsiness set in after our hearty lunch. On our return journey, we admired the lush rubber plantations and verdant surroundings.

After finishing dinner, we have an early appointment tomorrow to climb the mountain and enjoy the view of Kiree Wongkot village. Waking up, we will prepare to ride the E-Taek again. The morning air is very cool, with a little smoke coming out of our mouths.

The panoramic view from the top encompasses the entire village. This might be the origin of the village's name, "Khiriwongkot," which translates to "mountain labyrinth." The village is indeed surrounded by mountains. After enjoying the breathtaking view, it was time for breakfast. The morning menu consisted of fried rice and rice porridge. Following the concept of Mr. Aoy, the food was served hot and freshly cooked for maximum enjoyment.

After finishing our meal, it was time to head back. Before we said our goodbyes, Aoi gave us a small gift, a lovely white scarf. She also shared many positive thoughts with us. We look forward to seeing you again soon. 1900Miles invites everyone who has never experienced a 1-night stay with locals to give it a try.
