A Stroll Through Golden Mile Complex: A Little Thailand in Singapore

This review takes you on a walk through Golden Mile Complex, also known as Little Thai, Little Thailand, or Little Bangkok. This vibrant community hub serves as a testament to the Thai diaspora in Singapore. Despite facing demolition in the near future, Golden Mile Complex remains a significant landmark, offering a glimpse into Singapore's history.

To reach this cultural gem, simply hop on the yellow Circle Line and alight at Nicoll Highway Station (CC5), taking Exit A.

As you ascend the escalator to street level, continue onto the pedestrian bridge and follow the path. Looking back, you'll see the grassy area surrounding Nicoll Highway station, which often serves as a venue for events organized by the Thai community.

Look to your right and you will see the Golden Mile Tower, our destination is located there. Continue walking down the sky bridge and keep walking straight until you reach the intersection ahead, which is Beach Road. Turn right (approximately 150 meters from the station to Beach Road).

Turning the corner, we encountered a Duck Tours vehicle driving by. This activity, which allows you to explore Singapore both on land and in Marina Bay, has been awarded the Singapore Tourism Award. If you are interested, you can board at Suntec City, Esplanade Station (CC), Exit A. The price is around SG$43.

Golden Mile Complex: A Pioneering Mixed-Use Development in Singapore

The Golden Mile Complex, a 16-story mixed-use development, stands as a testament to Singapore's early urban renewal efforts. Completed in 1973 with a budget of approximately 18 million dollars, it was one of the first buildings in Singapore to integrate commercial, office, and residential spaces.

This innovative approach earned the Golden Mile Complex numerous accolades and recognition for its design. Today, it remains a popular destination for architecture students and enthusiasts seeking to learn from its unique blend of functionality and aesthetics.

The current atmosphere in the shops is still lively, even though they are not operating at full capacity. Overall, it feels like walking through a Thai town, with familiar Thai products, Thai signage, and Thai music playing. However, I've heard that many people are looking for new locations and others are deciding to return to Thailand permanently. While this is disheartening, it's also a natural part of life.

The second floor houses a supermarket selling Thai and Vietnamese products. For dining options, there are numerous Thai restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, including à la carte, buffet, and even Thai-style barbecue.

For lunch, I enjoyed a meal at **Beer Thai House**, located on the second floor of the mall. The restaurant offers a self-service food court-style atmosphere, with a table of condiments and fresh vegetables available for unlimited refills.

The single-dish meals come with local-style desserts and beverages.

Big noodles with pork waterfall, everything.

Tender and flavorful pork, clean and fresh-looking offal, delicious meatballs, crispy and fragrant pork skin, chewy and thick large noodles. The highlight is the fragrant and well-seasoned broth, which is delicious and highly recommended.

Thin rice noodles with stewed beef and fresh sliced beef

Explanation:

  • เส้นเล็ก (sen lek) - thin rice noodles
  • แห้ง (haeng) - dry (as opposed to soup)
  • เนื้อเปื่อย (neua peuay) - stewed beef
  • ชิ้นสด (chin sot) - fresh sliced beef

The large, fresh meat looked good but was tough and chewy. The stewed meat was tender and flavorful, well-prepared. The meatballs were good. The thin noodles were firm and chewy, up to standard. The seasoning was too salty due to the excessive use of dark soy sauce. Even the addition of fresh vegetables did not reduce the saltiness. Not recommended.

Waterfall noodles are a better choice than dry noodles.

Golden Mile Complex: A Slice of Thai History in Singapore

The Golden Mile Complex, a vibrant community hub for Thais in Singapore for nearly 50 years, is poised to become another chapter in the nation's history. This iconic landmark offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience history firsthand, rather than relying solely on written accounts or hearsay. Stepping into the complex evokes a sense of familiarity, inevitably reminding one of Thailand.

For those seeking a taste of Thai culture and heritage, the Golden Mile Complex presents an immersive experience. The sights, sounds, and aromas transport visitors to the heart of Thailand, offering a glimpse into the lives and traditions of the Thai community in Singapore.

However, the complex's future remains uncertain. With redevelopment plans looming, the Golden Mile Complex stands at a crossroads, its fate hanging in the balance. Whether it will be preserved as a historical landmark or transformed into something new remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: the Golden Mile Complex has played a significant role in shaping the Thai community in Singapore. It has served as a gathering place, a cultural center, and a home away from home for countless individuals. As the complex faces an uncertain future, it is crucial to reflect on its legacy and consider its potential impact on the Thai community and Singapore's cultural landscape.

Note: The original text mentions a bus service to Hatyai, which has been omitted from the translation as it is not directly related to the Golden Mile Complex.

Thank you very much.
