The Canadian Rockies: Where Two Seasons Collide

The Canadian Rockies, a majestic mountain range straddling the border between Canada and the United States, offer a breathtaking display of natural beauty where two seasons converge.

⛰️🌟Canadian Rockies, Alberta, Canada🌟⛰️

The Beauty of Two Seasons: Winter-Summer Transition (May 16-27, 2018)

The transition between winter and summer (May 16-27, 2018) is an excellent time to visit the Rocky Mountains. This period falls before the peak tourist season (summer), offering more affordable accommodation and fewer crowds. As winter melts into spring, the snow begins to thaw, and temperatures rise to a comfortable 8-16 degrees Celsius. While the snow has stopped falling, the mountain peaks remain adorned with a picturesque blanket of white. Roads become accessible after months of closure due to snowfall. However, boating activities like canoeing and lake tours may not be available until the end of May, depending on official announcements and the snow conditions on the lakes.

Although Canada has not traditionally been on the top of many travelers' lists, its location on the opposite side of the globe and perceived lack of excitement compared to the United States have contributed to this. Most people only associate Canada with Niagara Falls. However, a closer look reveals numerous world-class tourist destinations, including the renowned Lake Louise. During this trip, we flew from Thailand to Vancouver, British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. Upon arrival, we discovered several other stunning lakes that rivaled Lake Louise in beauty.

All photos were taken with a camera for amateurs like me, the Fuji X-A2 Mirror-less camera + XF 35mm f 1.4 lens. Some photos were taken with an iPhone 6 Plus. Therefore, I must say that the photos are not as beautiful as the real thing that I saw and touched with my own eyes.

🏔️✨ Canadian Rockies, Canada ✨🏔️

(Top image: Moraine Lake, a turquoise lake that I rate as the most beautiful on this trip.)

The first part is a collection of small tips for traveling to Canada (Vancouver side).

1. Obtaining a Canadian visa can be a challenging process. Despite having traveled to over 20 countries worldwide, holding a stable and high-level position, and possessing a strong financial statement, my visa application was rejected twice when submitted through an agency, taking over 20 days each time. However, when I submitted my application directly through the Canadian Immigration website, it was approved within a week. I believe this success was due to the inclusion of a detailed cover letter. This letter outlined my professional background, travel history, and reasons for visiting Canada, emphasizing my intention to return. It is crucial to provide a comprehensive cover letter when applying for a visa, detailing your identity, occupation, travel experiences, and reasons for visiting the country, while assuring your return.

2. Vancouver is a city with a large Asian population, boasting excellent air quality, clean streets, and the modern conveniences expected of a developed nation.

3. The cost of living is relatively high, comparable to Japan. However, restaurants here are obligated to include a service charge, tourist tax, and an additional 10-20% tip. (When paying at a restaurant with a credit card, you are required to press a button to select a tip percentage or dollar amount before completing the transaction. If you don't press it, you won't be able to swipe your card.)

4. The store offers friendly and welcoming service with a smile (because they have already charged a hefty service fee, haha).

5. The price displayed on the tag is not the final price, as taxes and other fees may apply depending on the city.

6. In addition to the 5% GST (Goods and Services Tax) and service charge, some cities impose additional taxes, such as the 4% Tourism Levy and the 2% Tourism Improvement Fee on hotel stays in Banff.

7. Japanese food there is reasonably priced. Tipping starts at 10%.

8. The waffles and hot chocolate at Nero Belgian Waffle Bar on Nelson Street are incredibly delicious.

9. For those who enjoy Bon Chon chicken, Zabu Chicken on Robson Street is a must-try. Its flavors are more intense and arguably superior.

10. The Highway from Vancouver to the Rocky Mountains is toll-free (and not expensive like Japan).

The distance from Vancouver to the Rocky Mountains (Banff) is approximately 800-900 kilometers, similar to driving from Bangkok to Phuket. It is recommended to fly domestically from Vancouver to Calgary, which is a 1-hour drive to the Rockies.

12. Renting a car from Thifty Car Rental:

While the rental rates are very affordable, the insurance charges are significantly higher than the rental cost itself. If you choose not to purchase insurance, be aware that you may be charged for any damage, even minor, upon returning the car unless it is thoroughly inspected. It is recommended to consider renting from other companies that offer inclusive pricing.

13. Tourist attractions in the Rocky Mountains are closed during the winter due to snow. Most roads open around the end of May. For example, Moraine Lake opened on May 22, 2018. It is recommended to check the closure schedule from the website https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/insta...

14. The Lake Louise Gondola is half the price of the Banff Gondola (37 CAD per person).

15. The Lake Louise Inn is fantastic. When booking, mention your honeymoon, and they will provide a complimentary bottle of red wine in your room.

1. Hong Kong Airlines round-trip tickets for two people = 37,571 baht. Very cheap!

2. Car rental fee (from May 21-27, 2018) 478 CAD = 12,235 baht (car rental 220 CAD and insurance 258 CAD, which is more expensive than the car rental itself * did not purchase insurance when booking the car).

3. Hotel cost 23,821 baht (from May 21-26, 2018)

4. Fuel cost: 5,372 Baht

5. Jasper & Banff National Park Pass Fee: 1,146 Baht

6. The cost of the 2Fly Sim internet package from AIS is 2x899 = 1,798 baht.

7. GPS rental fee for cars (rented from Thailand) 1,040 baht

8. Travel insurance for 2 persons: 1,204 Baht

9. Food, drinks, wine, snacks, bicycle rental, gondola rides, and other miscellaneous expenses for the entire trip totaled 15,468 baht.

Total expenses: 99,655 baht. Divided by 2, the cost per person is 49,827.5 baht.

Day 1: A Long Journey

Note: The original text includes emojis and HTML formatting. These elements have been preserved in the translation.

My journey began in Phuket, where I boarded Thai Airways flight TG 2284 at 7:40 PM. While waiting for my flight, I enjoyed dinner at the Thai Airways lounge.

Arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 9:05 PM. Pick up your luggage and check in at the Hong Kong Airlines counter around 1:40 AM. Flight HX 762: BKK – HKG: 4:40 AM - 9:00 AM. After clearing immigration (even though we are leaving the country), we stopped by The Wisdom Lounge for Krungsri Wisdom credit card customers, as we always do when traveling abroad. We ate, drank, and relaxed. The lounge is open 24 hours a day.

At approximately 4:00 AM, I proceeded to the departure gate to board my connecting flight to Hong Kong. Arriving in Hong Kong at precisely 9:00 AM, I took advantage of the Plaza Premium Lounge, accessible through my Priority Pass membership provided by Kasikornbank's The Wisdom credit card. Located on the upper floor near Gate 40, the lounge offered a comfortable space to enjoy a meal, relax, and freshen up with a shower before my 11-hour onward journey. To use the shower facilities, I informed the lounge staff and booked a time slot. They provided me with a voucher to present at the shower room, located near the United Club. The shower room allotted 30 minutes for showering.

The fish ball noodle soup in the lounge was delicious. I told the staff that I didn't want noodles, just fish balls. You can refill it as much as you want. There are many snacks and you can drink anything except alcoholic beverages.

Flight HX080 from Hong Kong to Vancouver arrived slightly delayed at 10:10 AM. Passengers cleared immigration through automated kiosks, which resembled questionnaires and were easy to navigate for English speakers. After completing the automated process, passengers were briefly checked by an officer who inquired about their travel plans. Upon exiting immigration, passengers boarded a shuttle to the city.

From the 16th to the 21st, we stayed at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Center Hotel, which is located in the heart of the city on Burrard Street, a main thoroughfare. The hotel is conveniently situated near Robson Street, a popular shopping and dining destination. The weather was pleasantly cool, ranging from 12 to 15 degrees Celsius. The rooms were spacious and offered stunning views of the city.

The sentence is already in English and does not require translation.

The spacious room boasts a modern and stylish design, complete with a Starbucks coffee machine and complimentary cups.

The first day will be a bit tiring because the time difference with Thailand is 14 hours. However, we must resist the urge to sleep, even if we are very sleepy, in order to adjust to the local time. Drink plenty of water.

Wine lovers can find great deals at BC Liquor Stores, easily located using Google Maps. Offering a wide selection of alcoholic beverages at competitive prices, these stores accept all major credit cards.

City Tour of Vancouver

During my initial days in Vancouver, I explored the city by walking, cycling, and visiting various landmarks, including:

Granville Island Public Market

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/uC5K3a4XeTP2

The bus stop where we were dropped off was a short walk from the market, about 5-10 minutes. We passed by a cement plant with a charmingly decorated silo. There was a glass display case showcasing working machinery, demonstrating the process of ready-mixed concrete production and transportation. It was a cool feature, and many people were taking pictures.

The cement silos look stunning. Thailand should consider implementing similar designs to enhance the aesthetics and livability of its cities.

The Grandville Island Public Market is a curated collection of handcrafted and artistic goods from around the world. From handmade soaps and bath products to fresh pasta, seafood, delectable baked goods, a variety of cheeses, and a quick-service food court, the market offers something for everyone. Spanning over 42,000 square feet (3,900 square meters), locals and tourists alike flock to the market for their shopping needs. If you're looking to prepare a picnic, the nearby park and patio provide a relaxing space to sit, people-watch, and enjoy your delicious finds. Exploring the entirety of the market can take anywhere from 2-3 hours to an entire afternoon. Outside, year-round street performances entertain visitors with everything from open-mic singing and magic shows to balloon animal creations for children.

Lions Gate Bridge Viewpoint

The iconic green bridge, a popular viewpoint in Vancouver, is a must-visit public space for breathtaking views.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/wVpXw6sfyaG2

Stanley Park

Stanley Park is a popular recreational area for Vancouver residents, featuring totem poles that offer excellent photo opportunities.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/DL9vAdYYa162

Totem poles: Symbols of Indigenous culture and history

Totem poles are intricately carved wooden pillars that stand as a testament to the artistic heritage of Indigenous peoples along the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. These monumental sculptures extend from southern Alaska, through British Columbia in Canada, and down to present-day Oregon in the United States.

We rented bicycles near the hotel and rode around the city, stopping here. Across from Stanley Park, you can see Canada Place, which is a white, pointed, canvas dome. There is an Olympic (winter) torch and a viewpoint there.

Queen Elizabeth Park

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/7FL7Ha4x3qG2

Nestled on a hilltop, this renowned urban park boasts meticulously landscaped gardens, elegant glasshouses, and expansive sports fields. Its tranquil ambiance surpasses the bustling atmosphere of Stanley Park, offering a serene escape from the city's clamor.

Science World at TELUS World of Science

This sentence is already in English. Is there anything else you would like me to do with it?

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/KgBQCT2EVZJ2

This is a spherical metal building resembling a globe. It is beautifully lit at night. This photo was taken from Coppers'park, which offers a fantastic atmosphere. It is considered another landmark of this city. Alternatively, you can take a leisurely stroll along the coast, which also provides a pleasant ambiance.

(Image above from the internet)

Grouse Mountain

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/ozhpsDCcsQ22

After reaching the foot of the mountain by bus, we took a gondola ride to the summit, which took approximately 10 minutes. Each gondola can accommodate around 30 people. The upper station offers restaurants, beverages, and hot coffee, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking views while sipping your drink. Although the snowfall had stopped, the temperature was around 8-10 degrees Celsius with strong sunshine. Despite being late in the winter season, the snow had not yet melted, providing opportunities for stunning photos in the snow. Unfortunately, the chairlift to the ski slope was closed during our visit, preventing us from experiencing the panoramic views from the top.

Capilano Suspension Bridge

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/wfgefgUcsL72

The world's longest wooden suspension bridge, hanging above the treetops, is 137 meters long and was built in 1889. It offers stunning views of the forest below. The atmosphere is very shady. At the entrance and exit points, there is a souvenir shop. The staff said it is the largest souvenir shop in Vancouver. If you want souvenirs, you should buy them here. They are not expensive and the items are of good quality and very cute.

At the exit, officials will distribute certificates stating that we have crossed the world's longest suspension bridge.

Bike Tour: Explore the City by Bicycle

This phrase advertises a bike tour, inviting people to rent bicycles and explore the city.

On a leisurely afternoon, I rented a bicycle from a shop near my hotel on Burrard Street. The cost was approximately 1,000 baht for a two-hour rental, which I found a bit pricey. The shop, Cycle City Shop, was recommended by the staff at the Sheraton Hotel, who also provided a 5% discount card. All bicycles were priced the same, regardless of type. I opted for an easy-to-ride model with a front basket. The shop required my passport and a credit card for payment. They informed me that I was the first Thai person to rent a bicycle from their shop. Is that true? The afternoon temperature was around 12 degrees Celsius, slightly chilly, but the cycling warmed me up quickly. I soon found myself removing my jacket.

Cycling through the Gas Town district, we followed a dedicated bike lane along the right side of the road. We stopped at Canada Place, where the Olympic flame (Winter Olympics) stands. The area offers a wide-open space with scenic views, and we observed seaplanes taking off and landing throughout our visit.

There is a killer whale monument where you can take cool photos. Then we cycled along the coast to cross into Stanley Park and under the Lions Gate Bridge, passing English Bay Beach Park and Sunset Beach (we came back here to watch the sunset, the atmosphere was amazing, there were lots of foreigners picnicking on the beach).

Sewell's Marina at Horse Shoe Bay

Location: https://goo.gl/maps/FqJrcsYqneH2

Activities: High-speed boat tours to observe seals in Horse Shoe Bay, West Vancouver. Options include large inflatable boats and speedboats. The larger boats are likely more enjoyable, but they were fully booked during our visit. The bay is surrounded by high mountains with snow-capped peaks, making for a chilly atmosphere. While waiting for our turn, we enjoyed a Starbucks across from the marina to pass the time.

Tourists can wear orange bear suits while cruising during rainy or snowy weather. These suits are windproof, waterproof, and very heavy.

Food and drink

Vancouver's Culinary Delights: A Foodie's Guide

Vancouver boasts a vibrant culinary scene, with a plethora of restaurants lining Robson and Davies streets. While Japanese cuisine reigns supreme in terms of affordability, other options abound. For chicken enthusiasts, Zabu Chicken on Robson Street offers a delectable experience, surpassing the renowned Bon Chon in terms of flavor intensity. Their Soy Wing, a classic preparation, is a must-try. Ramen enthusiasts, however, might find the broth lacking in complexity, resembling instant noodles.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/R8jxUn4YmUE2

The waffles and hot chocolate at Nero Belgian Waffle Bar on Nelson Street are incredibly delicious. The restaurant is renowned for its exceptional chocolate menu.

That's all for downtown Vancouver. Now, we'll embark on a road trip to explore the Rocky Mountains.

🏝️🛥️🌟🌈⚓🛶⛰️🔮🏕️⛵🏖️📸✈️🎉🌤️🏖️🎃🎉🛫🗼🗻😍🏆🏖️🎵💰🛫🗼

Rocky Mountains

The review of Vancouver is complete. Next, we will venture outside the city to encounter stunning natural scenery and magnificent snow-capped mountains, particularly along the route from Jasper National Park to Banff National Park (Highway 93 or Icefields Parkway). If you're not in a hurry, simply driving and admiring the scenery along the way is a treat. The long drive from Vancouver, approximately 900 kilometers, is similar to driving from Bangkok to Phuket, but the scenery along the way is far more breathtaking, especially when you reach the Rocky Mountains.

(Mt. Robson: Photographed while driving from Blue River town before reaching Jasper town)
This is the starting point of the magnificence of the Rocky Mountains on the route we used.

Upon arrival at the airport, proceed to the Parkade car park located opposite the domestic terminal. Take the lift down to the Ground Floor to access the car rental counters. We had booked a car with Thrifty through Carrental.com, opting for separate car insurance due to the significantly lower cost. However, upon reaching the counter, we were informed that the insurance purchased online was not valid for their vehicles. Fortunately, the insurance policy allowed for cancellation. Thrifty provided a phone to contact the insurance company, which promptly cancelled the policy and issued a refund to our credit card. We were then obliged to purchase insurance from Thrifty, which was considerably more expensive than the rental itself. (Note: If you are not satisfied with the insurance options at Thrifty, you can cancel your rental at the counter without penalty and explore other companies such as AVIS, which may offer a more competitive combined rate for car rental and insurance.) Thrifty has received numerous reviews regarding additional charges for customers who decline their insurance. During our return, we encountered this firsthand. However, upon informing them that we had purchased comprehensive insurance, they refrained from pursuing any claims.

The car we booked is a Toyota Camry with a 2.0 engine. The car is not old, not new, estimated to be about 1-2 years old. The left-hand drive is spacious and comfortable to drive. Usually, when I travel, I rent a small car to save fuel, but this trip requires a long drive, so I would like to choose a car with good performance. It's okay if it's a bit bigger.

Car rental fee (from May 21-27, 2018) 478 CAD = 12,235 THB (car rental fee 220 CAD and insurance fee 258 CAD)

The journey began around 9:00 AM.

During the journey, there is a rest stop approximately 2.5 hours or 220 kilometers away. You can stop for fresh coffee and use the restroom. The coordinates are https://goo.gl/maps/8T9PNCWBUFA2.

From there, head to Kamloops, a 100 km drive that takes about 4.5 hours. Stop for lunch at Aberdeen Mall Kamloops, a mid-sized mall with ample parking, similar in size to a Tesco Lotus in Thailand. The food court offers a variety of cuisines, including Chinese, Western, and fast food. Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/nKWckFKNUtF2

Glacier Mountain Lodge

The first night's accommodation for this trip is in the town of Blue River. We booked the accommodation through Agoda.com and paid on the day of arrival (Operated by Booking.com). Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/zUMczMBkRUU2

The hotel had a rustic motel vibe, reminiscent of those seen in American movies. Situated on the roadside, it served as a convenient stopover for travelers. The breathtaking view of snow-capped mountains surrounded the hotel from both the front and back. The price was reasonable, costing 117.23 CAD, approximately 2,800 Thai baht, including a simple self-service breakfast. The breakfast spread consisted of bread, yogurt, croissants, boiled eggs, sausages, tea, coffee, hot cocoa, cereal, and more. The hotel offered a communal area similar to a hostel, where guests could enjoy their meals. A microwave was available for heating ready-made meals, and hot water, drinking water, cups, plates, bowls, and spoons were provided. After finishing their meals, guests could simply place their used dishes in a designated bin without washing them.

The hotel was located on the roadside, adjacent to a Petro Canada gas station with a convenience store that closed at 9 pm. This was where we had our first refueling experience in Canada. We had to fill the tank ourselves and pay inside the convenience store beforehand. The attendant would then activate the pump for the amount we paid. Some gas stations did not accept foreign credit cards, requiring us to pay at the office inside the convenience store. Other stations allowed us to use our credit cards directly at the pump.

The room comes with a queen-size bed and can accommodate up to four people. The air conditioner and heater are a bit old but still function properly. The room is 32 square meters in size and offers a view of the snow-capped mountains from the window.

This hotel offers a complimentary small jacuzzi located in the central area next to the lobby and lounge area. After a long drive, guests can relax in the warm jacuzzi while enjoying the natural views behind the hotel. It's a truly delightful experience.

A three-minute drive from the hotel across the street, you'll find Eleanor Lake, nestled next to the railroad tracks. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a Western film, with stunning views of snow-capped mountains while swimming. The weather was perfect today, not too cold, and foreigners were jumping into the water, creating a unique atmosphere. Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/xx4BmBPgmr32

Day 1 of the Rocky Mountains (May 22, 2018)

After breakfast, we set off for the town of Jasper. About an hour's drive from our accommodation, we encountered the majestic Mount Robson. Mount Robson (3,954 m above sea level) is the highest peak in the North American Rockies.

The sentence is already in English and does not require translation.

The majestic sight of Mt. Robson was so awe-inspiring that we had to pull over and take a commemorative photo with it.

Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake, pronounced "ma-leen" or "ma-line," is the largest natural lake in Jasper National Park.

Coordinates: Link to Google Maps

Continuing for about another hour, 80 kilometers away, we arrived at the town of Jasper. However, we did not stop in the town center because we intended to head to Maligne Lake. We had to drive for about 50 kilometers, winding through the valleys and lakes along the way (passing Medicine Lake just for a scenic view). It took about an hour to reach our destination. On the day we arrived, the boat service to visit Spirit Island was not yet open, and the inner area was not yet open for walking. The visitor center was also closed (it will open on May 24th, we went 2 days before it opened, but the good thing is that there were fewer tourists). The indoor restrooms were also closed. Parking was free. When we entered the restroom at this parking lot, there was only one room, which was a pit toilet (I thought I was in China). There was only one room, but just being able to visit the front of the lake, right at the pavilion by the water, was already a thrill with the beautiful blue lake. At first, I thought this was the most beautiful place.

The sentence is already in English and does not require translation.

After driving back to Jasper town, we stopped by Maligne Canyon. Admission and parking are free. Park in front and walk in, following the signs to the viewpoints. If you don't want to walk too far, you don't have to. When we went, it wasn't very beautiful, and it was hot despite the cool weather.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/qkb5kNcHAdK2

Best Western Jasper Inn and Suites

The hotel we stayed at tonight (May 22, 2018) is a two-story building with a parking lot in the center, directly in front of the entrance to each room. We parked our car right in front of our room. The room was very spacious, with a living room featuring a large sofa, a fireplace, a kitchen equipped with cooking utensils, and a bedroom with a king-size bed. The sliding glass door at the back opens onto a lawn with a view of the mountains. The atmosphere was excellent, and the price was reasonable for this type of room. We paid 6,581 baht, not including breakfast. I believe the hotel's name has since changed to Jasper Inn and Suites By Sunrise. This hotel is also pet-friendly.

Since our hotel room has a kitchen, we decided to buy fresh ingredients and cook our own meals to save money. There is a supermarket not far from the hotel, about a 10-minute walk away. It was a good opportunity to explore the city while walking. The city center is quiet, with a pleasant atmosphere, clean, beautiful views, and a very livable environment.

Athabasca Falls

On the second day of our Rocky Mountain trip (May 23, 2018), we woke up early to pack our bags and check out around 8 am to avoid the crowds. We wanted to reach the Columbia Icefields before noon. During the 30-minute drive (33 km), we stopped to admire Athabasca Falls, a powerful waterfall with an immense volume of water. It was thrilling to walk to the point where the water was at its most turbulent. It was a bit scary! Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/G1XCiMUKzqQ2

Columbia Icefield

The Columbia Icefield, spanning 365 square kilometers, is the largest icefield in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, feeding six outlet glaciers. Situated at an elevation of 3,000 meters, the icefield experiences year-round snowfall.

The wind was very strong. We were able to walk around for about 20 minutes each before we had to get back on the bus to the bus stop. The bus ride back to the Glacier Skywalk took about 15 minutes. The coupon we bought was a package for two places: the glacier and the skywalk. However, if you only want to buy the glacier, you can do that too. The Skywalk is not very exciting. It's just a glass walkway on a cliff. I think the glass walkway in China is more scary and exciting.

Glacier Skywalk

The 280-meter-high glass walkway offers a breathtaking view of the valley below, with the stream and ground clearly visible. The atmosphere of the canyon resembles that of the Grand Canyon, and it was quite thrilling, although I didn't feel particularly excited.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/77bsmS66Gvz

Peyto Lake

Peyto Lake is one of the most impressive lakes on this trip. Located between the Columbia Ice Field and Lake Louise, it is about 85 kilometers from the entrance to Bow Lake and takes about an hour to drive (about half an hour before reaching Lake Louise). When you reach the parking lot of Bow Summit, the viewpoint of Peyto Lake, you will be amazed by its stunning turquoise color. Even with the melting ice, the lake still retains its vibrant blue hue. In the summer, the lake is even more breathtaking. The shape of the lake resembles a coyote's head, and some say it was used as the wallpaper for Huawei phones. After parking, you will need to walk through the snow, which is still quite deep (2-3 feet). It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach the viewpoint, which can be a bit time-consuming. Fortunately, someone had already cleared a path before us, making the walk a bit easier. The path was likely only recently opened to the public, as the snow was several meters deep just a week or two ago.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/Qdi2iS6Asut

(Image from the internet showing the entire lake covered in sky)

Bow Lake

Bow Lake is located between Peyto Lake and Lake Louise, our final destination for the night (and the trip). It's a 5-kilometer drive, taking about 10 minutes from the Peyto Lake parking lot (Bow Summit). The lake offers panoramic views, almost like being by the ocean, as we could take pictures right at the edge. The scenery was stunning, so we took many photos from this angle. The ice was already starting to melt at that time.

Lake Louise

Lake Louise: A Tale of Two Visits

As dusk approached, casting long shadows across the valley, we checked into the Lake Louise Inn. Eager to explore the famed turquoise waters, we hopped back into the car and drove the short distance to the lakeshore.

The late afternoon sun cast a golden glow on the surrounding peaks, painting the scene with a touch of magic. The air was crisp, with a gentle breeze carrying the scent of pine. Though the ice hadn't fully melted, revealing patches of the vibrant blue water beneath, the sight was breathtaking.

Despite the lingering chill (a brisk 5-6 degrees Celsius), we were captivated by the fairytale-like atmosphere. The lack of a jacket, a consequence of the day's warmth, only added to the experience, allowing us to truly feel the invigorating bite of the mountain air.

Our visit to Lake Louise was a two-part affair. The first, in the fading light of the evening, offered a serene and intimate encounter with the lake. The second, the following morning, presented a starkly different scene.

Arriving just before 8:30 am, we were greeted by the gentle caress of the rising sun and a near-empty lakeshore. However, the tranquility was short-lived. By 9:00 am, a swarm of 300 Japanese students and other tour groups descended upon the area, transforming the atmosphere.

Fortunately, our early arrival allowed us to capture the beauty of the lake in relative solitude. This, we realized, was a significant advantage of staying at the nearby Lake Louise Inn. While the luxurious Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise offered stunning lake views from its rooms, its hefty price tag (around 20,000 baht per night) and the potential for crowds made our choice all the more appealing.

As dusk approached, the atmosphere grew dim, and we donned dark clothing to blend in with the fading light.

The morning at Lake Louise is a spectacle of yellow and orange hues, a vibrant display that commands attention. The early hours reveal a sky painted in shades of blue, creating a breathtaking contrast against the vibrant colors below.

We stayed at the Lake Louise Inn for 201 CAD per night, booked through Agoda with prepayment. We had to pay an additional 19.34 CAD in taxes and 8.40 CAD in service charges (including internet access) upon check-in. This was mentioned during the booking process. The hotel is an old establishment with a very warm atmosphere. The parking lot is spacious, but when unloading luggage from the car, you need to lift it up the stairs as there is no ramp from the parking lot. However, this was not a problem for us as we are strong. There is an indoor swimming pool and a hot jacuzzi located behind the reception. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to relax in them. Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/ZUXuCQxqBEF2

Moraine Lake

This is the most beautiful lake I've ever seen on this trip. I never thought it would be this beautiful.

This emerald-green lake, untouched by any filters, is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and flanked by rows of pine trees, creating a breathtakingly beautiful atmosphere.

Coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/1UBf1fzVzFs

After taking pictures at Lake Louise in the morning (May 24, 2018), we drove out and turned right onto Moraine Lake Road. We drove to the end of the road, about 15 minutes, and reached the parking lot. We then walked down to the lake or up to the top of the cliff opposite the parking lot (there is a good walking path) to take beautiful pictures. The wind was very strong and the air was cold, but it was amazing. We traveled on May 24, 2018, which was very good timing because the road had just been opened to traffic on May 22, 2018 (open for 2 days). You should check the closing schedule from the website https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/insta... There was still some snow on both sides of the road, and there were not many tourist cars. A senior friend of mine had traveled there a week before us and could not enter because the road was closed during the winter season when there was snow covering the entire road. The hotels in the area were also closed. After we returned, about two weeks later, a junior friend of mine went there too. It turned out that they were not allowed to drive their own cars to the lake because there were too many tourist cars and there was no parking space. They had to park their cars at the outside parking lot and queue up for the shuttle bus, which probably cost money. They had to wait a long time before they could see the lake, but it was worth it to see one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, which is just as beautiful as Lake Louise. Therefore, the best time to visit the lake is when the road has just been opened. We were really lucky to be there at the right time. We enjoyed the atmosphere for about 2-3 hours and it was almost noon, so we came down from the viewpoint and drove to the town of Banff.

Lake Louise Gondola

Google search results indicate that Lake Louise Ski Resort is located at the lower station, with restaurants and resorts along the way to Banff. After passing the Lake Louise exit and crossing the highway, we decided to stop by the gondola to enjoy the view of Lake Louise. We initially planned to just take a look and possibly come back the next day, but we realized we still had time as it was only a little past noon. After walking around and inquiring about the price, we decided to take the gondola ride. We were not disappointed! The view from above was breathtaking. We opted for the open-air gondola, also known as the chairlift, which skiers use to access the slopes. Notably, the gondola here is half the price of the Banff Gondola, and there were significantly fewer tourists. There weren't many reviews either. From the top, we could see Lake Louise in the distance. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

Johnston Canyon

Before entering the town of Banff, there is another attraction worth visiting: Johnston Canyon. This canyon features a scenic trail that winds along the edge of a cascading stream, offering a refreshing and immersive experience. While the hike may be somewhat strenuous and lengthy, the reward is well worth the effort. The waterfalls along the trail are particularly impressive, with powerful cascades that showcase the natural beauty of the area.

Banff Town

We arrived in Banff (pronounced "bamf") around 4-5 pm, driving 72 kilometers from Moraine Lake, which took about an hour. The original plan was to take the Banff Gondola, but since we had just had an amazing gondola ride, we decided to skip the Banff Upper Hotspring as well. Instead, we opted to walk around Banff town. It's a charming town, similar to Jasper but not as quiet. It's a lively town with many tourists, a wide variety of restaurants, and numerous souvenir shops. There's plenty to keep you entertained and avoid feeling lonely. However, goods here are more expensive than in other cities due to an added tourism tax. We stayed at the Bow View Lodge for the night, which cost CAD 114.35 without breakfast or wifi. We ended up using our 4G mobile data instead.

Upon arriving in Vancouver, we checked into our hotel, the Ramada Limited Vancouver Airport, which is conveniently located near Richmond Park.

Breakfast and Parking at the Hotel

The breakfast buffet cost 4,192 baht. There is free underground parking available. We had to park our car next to the hotel and check in first. Then, the staff gave us a card or code to access the underground parking lot behind the hotel. This was very convenient.

Richmond Park and Richmond Centre

After checking in, we went for a walk in Richmond Park and then had lunch at Richmond Centre. Most of the people we saw in the mall were Asian residents of Canada. We stayed at the hotel for one night.

Returning the Rental Car

The next morning, after checking out, we returned the rental car at the airport. We followed the signs for rental car returns and parked the car in the designated area for our rental company. We then went to the rental car counter to clear the paperwork. There were some scratches on the car that were already there before we picked it up. The staff tried to charge us extra for these, even though the scratches were documented on the paperwork. However, when we mentioned that we had purchased full insurance, their attitude changed and they let us return the car without any problems. It was interesting to note that the staff at the rental car company were mostly Indian.

Airport Lounge Access

When it was time to check in for our flight, we used our Priority Pass, which we got with our Krungsri Wisdom credit card, to access the airport lounge. We had two options: SKYTEAM LOUNGE (Gate 53) or PLAZA PREMIUM LOUNGE (Level 3).

Upon boarding the aircraft, passengers were provided with meals and tablets for entertainment, as the Vancouver-Hong Kong flight lacked individual television screens. This was surprising, considering the 11-hour flight duration. Notably, this absence of screens was consistent on both outbound and return journeys. In contrast, the Hong Kong-Bangkok route, with a flight time of only 3 hours, offered individual screens at every seat.

As before, upon arriving in Hong Kong during our layover, we headed to the lounge at Gate 40 to freshen up and use the shower facilities.

The cost of using the shower room, without any special privileges, is 900 baht per use (200 HKD).

Journey's End: A Return to Phuket

After a relaxing stay, we boarded our flight back to Suvarnabhumi Airport, arriving just after midnight. Upon arrival, we returned the GPS navigator used for our rental car at the airport post office, located on the 4th floor near Gate W. Please note that the post office is closed between 00:00 and 00:30.

While waiting for our connecting flight, we rested in the Bangkok Airways lounge, which opens at 4:00 AM. Until then, we patiently waited near the check-in counters. Our early morning flight to Phuket finally arrived at 6:00 AM.

Due to jet lag, it took a few days to fully recover and resume our usual activities.

The adventure concludes here. Where to next? #SavingUp
