MEMORIES at TRANG | Travel, Explore, and Cruise...Trang
**Embark on a Southern Adventure** This trip, we set our sights on **Trang Province**, a coastal gem on the Andaman Sea renowned for its **captivating charm**. This **spontaneous family road trip** marked our **first visit** to Trang, and it left an **indelible mark** on us.
"Let's get to know Trang Province."
**Trang Province** is renowned as a city of happiness, blessed with abundant natural tourist attractions, both by water and land, as well as delicious food and a culturally rich lifestyle that is the envy of many. Formerly known as **Mueang Thap Thiang**, Trang was once a port city, a center of trade and transportation. It is a coastal city with forests, water, and borders with neighboring provinces such as Krabi, Phatthalung, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Traveling to Trang is convenient, with options including car, plane, and train. It's truly a place where "getting there is easy, and leaving is just as simple."
'That day', when I only heard the name and stories, was not the same as... 'Today', when I finally visited Trang City myself. :)
"Next stop...Kantang"
Our journey began in **Phuket Province**, heading towards **Trang Province** in a leisurely four-hour drive. The route offered a scenic panorama of rolling hills interspersed with lush greenery. Before checking into our accommodation, we made a detour to **Kantang District**. This district is renowned for its historic railway station, the last stop on the southern railway line along the Andaman coast.
The journey from Phuket to Kantang District (~124 kilometers) can be completed by taking Highway 4, Highway 4046, and Highway 4008, followed by Highway 403. This will lead you directly to your destination.
: : Kantang Railway Station is a single-story wooden building with a hip roof, painted in mustard yellow with dark brown accents. It retains its original architectural style from the reign of King Rama VI and has been registered as an ancient monument by the Fine Arts Department.
The station was unusually quiet that day, despite being open as usual. Inside, there were ticket booths, waiting benches, an old train set, and a platform. In a small office, there was a desk and a cabinet displaying historical artifacts, offering a glimpse into the past.
While train travel may not be as popular as it once was due to the emergence of faster and more convenient alternatives, Kantang Railway Station remains a symbol of continuity, coexisting with the modern lives of the people of Kantang district.
**Kantang Railway Station** is located on Na Khai Road, Kantang Subdistrict, Kantang District, Trang Province.
Current Train Services in Thailand: Bangkok-Kantang and Beyond
Currently, there are two daily train services connecting Bangkok and Kantang: one express train and one rapid train, both taking approximately 14 hours. Additionally, passengers can opt for a shorter journey from Muang District to Kantang District, covering a distance of approximately 44 minutes for a mere 5 baht. This local train offers a unique and immersive experience.
"Have you 'fallen in love' at... Love Station?"
… reaching Kantang Station means reaching Love Station Cafe' as well :)
Love Station Cafe: A Mini Oasis at Kantang Railway Station
Love Station Cafe, a miniature haven, instantly catches the eye with its vibrant colors that perfectly complement the Kantang Railway Station. This cozy spot offers a relaxing atmosphere where you can soak in the ambiance of the station and platform at your own pace. Whether you choose to bask in the cool air conditioning indoors or enjoy the fresh air outside, the cafe provides free Wi-Fi for your convenience.
The interior is charmingly decorated with toys, collectibles, and postcards. Drinks are reasonably priced, while the taste is average.
The evening was drawing in as we left Kantang Railway Station in search of a restaurant (our first meal in Trang) that also offered views of the river at dusk. As the sky began to lose its light, we drove to a long bridge overlooking the Trang River, which flowed gently with houses lining both banks. Standing there, breathing in the fresh air and looking out as far as the eye could see, we could see the hazy sky above the distant mountains.
The evening river and the beauty of the setting sun slowly sinking low... It's one of the best atmospheres during dinner. :)
"Delicious… by the Trang River"
**: : "ภู...ตรัง" Kitchen [ Old Breath in a New Home ]** is located right next to the Trang River. It is a fairly spacious open-air restaurant that can accommodate groups. The food ordered will be in large plates, suitable for group dining. Each dish is full of meat and has a slightly sweet taste. As for the seafood, it looks fresh and delicious.
Today, I had the opportunity to sample a variety of dishes. The meal began with fresh, large oysters served with a selection of vegetables, including stir-fried bai miang leaves with eggs. For seafood, I ordered crab meat stir-fried with curry powder, which featured generous portions of crab meat. I also enjoyed stir-fried chewy clams with a spicy kick, a whole sea bass fried with fish sauce, and a sour and spicy curry with fish and young coconut shoots.
The total cost of the meal was approximately 1,400 baht, leaving everyone feeling full and satisfied.
If you find yourself in Kantang District, be sure to try the southern Thai cuisine at "ภู…ตรัง" Kitchen. This restaurant is located in Bang Mak Subdistrict, along the main road leading to Kantang District. It's easy to find!
After driving from Kantang back to Mueang district, a distance of over twenty kilometers, we finally arrived at our accommodation for the night. We had booked the hotel online before our trip, so we didn't have to worry about finding a place to stay.
**: : Rue Rasada Hotel** or **Rue Hotel** features a unique exterior architecture resembling a cruise ship, offering guests an immersive experience akin to staying aboard a luxurious vessel.
The hotel boasts a spacious and elegant lobby. Guest rooms are decorated in a simple yet luxurious style, featuring comfortable beds, built-in wardrobes, and a vanity set. The bathroom is well-proportioned, with a glass wall and a full range of amenities.
The room rate for tonight is 1,800 baht per night (excluding breakfast), which is considered reasonable.
The Boat Hotel: A Classic Choice in Trang
The Boat Hotel is a well-established and renowned hotel in Trang Province. Situated in Mueang District, it boasts close proximity to Robinson Department Store and a public park. This large-scale hotel offers high standards and a welcoming atmosphere, making it an attractive option for discerning travelers.
From the balcony of the room, you can see the hotel itself, the view of the buildings, the city, and in the distance, the mountain range.
This morning's atmosphere is pleasant, the weather is not too hot. Since we booked the hotel without breakfast included, our group woke up a little early to go out and explore. We'll be sightseeing and enjoying the local food. :)
The city center has a peaceful atmosphere. The number of people and vehicles is moderate, possibly due to the increasing number of tourists attracted by the city's allure.
On our first visit, we drove around to see the shophouses, shops, and streets. We passed the Dugong roundabout and saw buildings that retained their architectural uniqueness as well as others. And, of course, we encountered the iconic frog-headed tuk-tuks that still roam the streets of Trang, picking up and dropping off passengers.
A Taste of Trang: Exploring the Morning Meal Ritual
The allure of Trang extends beyond its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. It's also renowned for its unique culinary traditions, particularly the emphasis placed on breakfast. Locals indulge in 5-6 meals a day, and breakfast holds a special significance as the first and most important meal of the day.
Venturing into the heart of Trang, one can't help but embrace the local customs. Immersing oneself in the rhythm of the city means embracing its culinary delights, starting with the morning feast.
Let's indulge! (I'm totally up for it)
The first restaurant we visited was called Letrang 2, a landmark among breakfast spots in the area. The restaurant features a glass-enclosed interior and an outdoor seating area. The space is decorated with lush greenery and climbing plants, creating a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.
The highlight of breakfast here is undoubtedly the **'dim sum'**. The sight of steaming hot dim sum trays, ready to be picked and served immediately, is a common sight. This staple food of Trang is best enjoyed with the restaurant's special dipping sauce, creating a perfect culinary harmony.
Arriving at Letrang 2 Restaurant, we highly recommend trying their **Hae Cho Poo**, a large crab meat roll packed with fresh crab meat. Additionally, their **Shrimp Noodle Rolls** are served hot and fresh, and their **Grilled Pork** boasts a well-balanced flavor that is a must-try. This restaurant is considered a **'gastronomic haven'** in **Trang City**, and we truly believe it's worth a visit.
A Feast of Dim Sum Delights
This spread boasts an impressive array of dim sum delicacies, including:
- Har gow: Delicate shrimp dumplings, translucent and bursting with flavor.
- Siu mai: Open-faced dumplings filled with savory pork and topped with a vibrant orange roe.
- Nian gao: Sweet and sticky rice cakes, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune.
- Baozi: Fluffy steamed buns, filled with savory meats or sweet fillings.
- Crab and shrimp dumplings: Succulent morsels of seafood encased in delicate wrappers.
- Roasted pork: Tender and flavorful, with a crispy skin.
This impressive selection offers a delightful culinary journey through the world of dim sum, showcasing the diversity and artistry of this beloved Cantonese tradition.
> > **Letrang 2 Restaurant** is located on Sai Ngam Road, Soi Sai Ngam 1 in Mueang District. (The restaurant is located in the alley behind Rajdamnoen Hospital.)
The Enduring Culture of "Kopi" in Trang
The tradition of enjoying breakfast and coffee, known as "kopi", has long been a cornerstone of life in Trang. Locals typically eat several meals a day, often accompanied by coffee. This deep-rooted custom has resulted in a vibrant coffee shop scene throughout the city, offering a place to sip coffee while savoring dim sum, roasted pork, and a variety of other delicacies.
Indeed, Trang is truly blessed with an abundance of delicious food.
:: Ruean Thai Dim Sum: A restaurant specializing in dim sum (20 baht per basket) with authentic flavors and traditional recipes. They offer a wide variety of dim sum, including fried, steamed, and hot dishes like bak kut teh with Chinese herbs. Here, you'll find "youtiao" called "yiu ja gwai" instead of the usual youtiao. It's served with custard instead. Trang-style youtiao, according to the Chinese, has a different appearance. This is quite unique.
> > Thai House Dim Sum is located on Phlenchit Phakdi Road in Mueang Trang district. It's another restaurant that I tried and would like to recommend.
Although we have satisfied our hunger, the journey for souvenirs continues. Trang offers a diverse selection of local delicacies, including the renowned grilled pork, best purchased early in the morning to avoid disappointment. Additionally, the iconic Trang cake, with its distinctive holes, is a must-try and available in various flavors to suit your preferences.
We stopped by this shop first. They say... they have delicious coconut cake :)
Richy Bakery & Restaurant is a charming establishment offering a delightful selection of food, cakes, coffee, and souvenirs. The cozy interior boasts a sweet and inviting ambiance. We indulged in a freshly baked 'young coconut cake,' which was incredibly soft and melted in our mouths. It was a truly delicious experience that exceeded our expectations.
Before leaving, I bought some large mooncakes with overflowing taro filling. They were as delicious as everyone said.
Richy Restaurant is located on Ratsada Road in Mueang Trang District, near Trang Stadium. If you're in the area, be sure to stop by and try it for yourself!
Next Station | Phatthalung
From Trang City, we headed towards Phatthalung Province, another province I had never visited before (a distance of approximately 60 kilometers).
The Andaman Gateway: Khao Phap Pha
While traveling to Phatthalung Province, you will pass "Trang…Gateway to the Andaman," located on Khao Phap Pha Road, Trang-Phatthalung. This rest stop features a sculpture of an elephant herd as its symbol. This is likely due to the historical significance of elephants as essential tools for hauling, transporting materials, pulling carts, and dragging stones for construction, ultimately contributing to the success of various projects. As a tribute, the 'elephant' sculpture was erected as a monument at Khao Phap Pha.
> > **Andaman Gateway** is located on Highway 4, Moo 7, Khao Chong Subdistrict, Na Yong District, Trang Province.
...to Phatthalung Province, a city that evokes a sense of tranquility, simplicity, and escape from the chaos. It is a perfect destination to seek refuge from the hustle and bustle, offering a true...retreat for relaxation.
This time, I had the opportunity to visit Chalermprakiet Road, built to commemorate the 80th birthday anniversary of His Majesty the King on December 5, 2007. It is a long road that separates Talenoy from Taleluang of Songkhla Lake. It is also the longest bridge over a lake in Thailand.
The Chalermprakiet Bridge serves not only as a transportation route but also as a scenic viewpoint where various animals, such as buffaloes and different bird species, reside. Take a leisurely drive and stop by the tranquil lakeside to experience the serenity of nature. You'll find yourself thinking, "Life is good!"
The 80th Anniversary of His Majesty the King's Coronation Road (December 5)
This road, originally known as Baan Sai Kling Road, connects Khuan Khanun District in Phatthalung Province to Ban Hua Pa District in Songkhla Province. It offers stunning views, opportunities for nature study, and wildlife sightings.
"Don't know me (yet), don't know you"
Phatthalung may not be the first choice for many travelers. It is a quiet and peaceful city, and we ourselves did not know what hidden gems it held. Due to our limited time, we were unable to discover everything, but what we did experience was a simple way of life, free from the hustle and bustle of other tourist destinations.
Phatthalung Province remains perfectly preserved, offering ample opportunities for future exploration.
That evening, we were still in Phatthalung and checked into The Centris Hotel. We had booked a room for three people (breakfast not included).
The room was adequately sized, not cramped, and clean. The overall condition was new. There was a coffee shop on the first floor of the hotel and a dedicated parking lot in front of the hotel. If you walk out a bit, you will find a street and shophouses. The shops were convenient for first-time visitors like us.
The Centris Hotel is conveniently located on Phothisat Road in Ku Hasawan Subdistrict, Mueang District. It is situated in an alley next to the Top Charoen store, with clear signage for easy identification.
Coffee: A Journey Through Time
Before heading back, grab a cup of coffee at a shop located along the way in Phanom Wang Subdistrict, Khuan Khanun District, Phatthalung Province.
ROUTE 41: Cowboy Town Phatthalung
This roadside rest stop immediately catches the eye, inviting travelers to pull over and explore. The design evokes a cowboy town, transporting visitors to a unique atmosphere. The complex boasts a coffee shop, a steakhouse, and clean restrooms, offering a convenient and enjoyable break for weary travelers.
Whether hot or cold, the coffee here boasts a rich flavor, perfect for those on long drives. If you're craving a strong cup of coffee, this is the place to stop.
...No matter how many times I have traveled, no matter when the trip ends, the 'feeling' I get when I return is never the same.
Some places...captivate with their beauty, clear skies, beautiful fog, and high mountains. Some places...have such delicious food that you have to give them a thumbs up.
In some places, the people are kind and welcoming. In others, the experiences are unique and unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression that we often find ourselves reminiscing about.
Despite the differences in destinations, there is a commonality in travel experiences. These places often transform from **"novel experiences"** into **"old friends"** who beckon us to return for **"intimate reunions."**
A Journey Through the South: Trang and Phatthalung
This trip, like many others, took us to a seemingly ordinary town, devoid of ostentatious attractions. Yet, it was brimming with a charm that compels us to return… again and again.

As "the journey never ends," please stay tuned for our next adventure. See you soon! :)
