Photos from the second roll of film in my Japan trip (the fourth roll since I started learning photography).

The Kurobe Gorge (黒部峡谷, Kurobe Kyōkoku) is a stunning natural wonder located in the Northern Japan Alps. It is known for its dramatic scenery, including towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests. The gorge is also home to the Kurobe Dam, a massive hydroelectric dam that is a marvel of engineering.

And I must emphasize that you must go! Because the real thing is many times more beautiful than the pictures.

The Kurobe Gorge is located in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The easiest way to get there for JR Pass holders is...

  • For those traveling from Toyama Station-

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen Station, then transfer to the Toyama Chiho Railway to Unazuki Onsen Station.

Then transfer to the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

The Kurobe Gorge Railway operates from May 28th to November 30th.

Kurobe Gorge Railway Operating Hours

The Kurobe Gorge Railway operates from Unazuki Station between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The last train departing from Keyakidaira Station is approximately 5:00 PM.

Shin-unazuki Station

A special round-trip ticket is available for passengers traveling between Shin-unazuki and Unazuki stations for 1,100 yen. This offer is valid for passengers who arrive early in the morning.

Passengers can purchase tickets at the Unazuki station exit if there are no staff available at the Shin-unazuki station.

We went in early November 2016. The leaves were starting to change color, but they weren't at their peak yet. If you want to see the leaves at their most beautiful, be sure to check the fall foliage schedule for each year.

We opted to ride the train to the end of the line, as we had limited time and wouldn't be able to explore along the way.

Each station takes about 20-30 minutes. If you sit all the way to the end, it takes 1.30 hours. It seems like a long time, but it's so much fun that you don't want to close your eyes.

Kurobe Dam

The Kurobe Dam is a large arch dam located in the Northern Alps of Japan. It is the tallest dam in Japan and one of the tallest in the world. The dam is a popular tourist destination, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Passengers can choose between two types of train cars: open-air cars (offering panoramic views) and standard closed cars (with an additional 500 yen fare).

If you've ever taken the Romantic Train Line in Kyoto, you'll want to visit this place. The scenery is beautiful all the way, and you can enjoy it to your heart's content.

Along the way, you can stop to take pictures of the natural scenery and soak in the onsen. What a treat!
