Chiang Mai, a province that captivates our hearts with every visit. From its friendly people and charming houses to its diverse tourist attractions, Chiang Mai never fails to impress. However, this trip was unique as we ventured beyond the city limits, exploring a hidden gem just a 30-minute drive away. Join us on this exciting journey!

When it comes to strawberries, Mae Rim is the place to be. For tigers, many people think of Khun Wang. For a sea of mist, you might think of climbing various distant mountains. For adventure activities, you might not be able to think of any because there are so many to choose from. But there is one place in Chiang Mai where you can experience everything mentioned above without having to travel to multiple locations, and it's conveniently located near Mae Rim.

Ban Pong Krai: A Nature Lover's Paradise in Northern Thailand

Nestled in the lush mountains of Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai, Ban Pong Krai is a charming village dedicated to nature conservation. This hidden gem offers a plethora of activities, making a 2-day, 1-night trip feel insufficient.

The village boasts a cool climate year-round, with temperatures dipping to a chilly 10 degrees Celsius during our visit in early February. We found ourselves huddled around a crackling bonfire to ward off the evening chill.

After settling into our accommodation, we embarked on our first activity: an ATV ride up the mountain.

The trail was relatively easy, offering a relaxing ride with stunning views and a refreshing breeze.

It was an incredibly enjoyable experience.

After driving uphill for a while, you will come across Wat Pong Krai and Phra That Si Chol Korn, an incredibly beautiful temple. Please note that construction is still ongoing.

The Phra That Si Chom Thong is a beautiful temple located on a hill. The temple is illuminated at night, making it a stunning sight. The temple is visible from our accommodation.

After that, we continued driving the ATV to the viewpoint. We were then greeted by a breathtaking sight of pink trumpet trees in full bloom, blanketing the landscape in a sea of vibrant color.

This place is stunning! I just found out about it, and I didn't know it existed. Usually, you have to drive up to Khun Wang or Khun Chang Kian, but now I know a new spot. It's truly unseen!

After the viewpoint, we went back down to the village and met a group of aunts who were making clay flowers, a local OTOP product.

Since we were already there, we asked the aunts to try making orchids.

Examples of beautiful flower arrangements

The first step after mixing the clay is to pass it through a rolling machine to create thin sheets.

Press the mold to create patterns on the petals.

This will give you a pattern like this.

Then leave the stem for a while.

The assembly process involved using latex and hot glue. While it may seem simple, it was actually quite challenging.

After a long period of brainstorming, the project is finally taking shape.

Ta-daaa! Our first Thai terrestrial orchid is finally in bloom! Isn't it beautiful? Hehe.

After crafting their own orchid, the participants proceeded to the lab of the Phra Muen Orchids Conservation Group in Ban Pong Krai.

There, they received Phra Muen orchid seedlings to plant in the forest.

The Phra Muen orchid is a local orchid found in rainforests at least 1,000 meters above sea level.

Our little guide for today's trip

We then ventured into the forest to find the perfect spot for our little orchids. The journey was incredibly challenging, requiring a 4WD vehicle to navigate the rugged terrain.

After completing the orchid planting mission, we prepared to watch the sunset at the viewpoint.

Along the way, there were zipline bases to be seen. The distance between each base was quite long, with up to 30 bases.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the horizon, the breathtaking panorama of Chiang Mai's majestic peaks unfolded before our eyes. From our vantage point, we could clearly distinguish the towering heights of Doi Luang Chiang Dao and Doi Inthanon, among other prominent summits. However, it is important to note that this particular viewpoint is not accessible to independent travelers due to the steep and treacherous terrain, as well as the one-way traffic flow. For those seeking to experience the panoramic vistas, ziplining or ATV rides are available through Kankhan Baan Doi Homestay.

After enjoying the sunset to our heart's content, we returned to our accommodation. Now, our little stomachs were growling for food!

Our accommodation for tonight is Kang Han Baan Doi Homestay.

Dinner tonight was delicious and very filling.

After a satisfying meal, the audience was treated to an adorable performance by the village children.

As the night deepens, the temperature drops significantly. During our visit, the temperature hovered around ten degrees Celsius, making a heat tech insufficient. We had to rely on a fire to stay warm.

The Milky Way was visible during our visit, and we were able to take pictures of it from the temple.

The spotlights are usually on, but we were able to ask the abbot to turn them off. This photo was taken on February 5, 2017, around 5:00 AM.

The next morning, we went to Wat Pong Krai to make merit. The temperature was still in the low tens, as usual. It was freezing! 🥶

This morning, we went up to the viewpoint at Ban Pong Krai again to see if there would be a sea of fog. The answer is no. 555 We'll try again next time.

After enjoying the scenic view, we headed to Baan Suan Klang Doi to savor fresh strawberries straight from the farm. As we arrived, they conveniently turned on the water, resulting in the stunning visuals captured in the photo.

Willing to get wet for the sake of fun.

A relaxing corner next to a strawberry field.

The strawberries here are pesticide-free and ready to be picked. The owner is very kind, and the strawberries are also very sweet.

Next to the garden house in the middle of the mountain, there is a field of chrysanthemums. You can go in and take pictures.

After taking photos until we were exhausted, we returned to fill our little stomachs once again. We were very full and the food was as delicious as ever.

After a satisfying meal, we continued our adventure with an ATV ride.

Another exciting activity close to our accommodation is Pongyang Zipline & Jungle Coaster.

Today, we only had time to play Jungle Coaster. It was a lot of fun, but a little scary. I recommend riding alone for a more comfortable experience.

After a thrilling ride on the jungle coaster, we relaxed at Pongyeang Berry-Windy Hill, where the coffee is exceptional.

Besides delicious coffee, this place also offers stylish photo spots.

Fresh strawberries are available here! Picked straight from the farm, Royal Project 80 jumbo size, only 180 baht per kilogram!!

Before leaving, let me show you my accommodation, "Kang Han Baan Doi Homestay." It's a lovely place with a very friendly owner. The rooms are adorable, and the price is reasonable.

The signature windmills in the village are charmingly decorated and cozy. For those who are afraid of the cold, there are water heaters in every house.

The upper floor has a large glass window, so you can lie in bed and watch the stars at night.
