We secretly imagined a fun plot when Yai Muai invited us to visit "Mulika R.S. 124" in Kanchanaburi.

We have gathered information. This is a **new tourist attraction that takes us back in time to experience Rattanakosin during the reign of King Rama V, a period of immense change in Thailand. The abolition of slavery and the country's rapid development make this era a classic and captivating one.

Everyone seems to be going on trips dressed in traditional Thai clothing, acting like they're from the past, and taking pictures. Wow! I have to do it too!

Therefore, our trip to Mallika City is in the style of "A Chinese girl lost in the capital at Mallika City, R.S. 124." Let's follow along.

Travel

Mallika City R.S. 124 is located just a short drive from Bangkok, approximately 2-3 hours away. To get there, follow the Bangkok-Kanchanaburi route and then take Highway 323, the Kanchanaburi-Sai Yok route, until kilometer 15. Mallika City is situated on the left-hand side, next to a Bangchak gas station, before the entrance to Prasat Muang Sing.

Getting to Mallika City from Bangkok without a car:

Option 1: Bus

Take a minivan or bus from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok and get off at the Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal (BKS).
From the bus terminal, take a bus on the Sai Yok - Thong Pha Phum - Sangkhlaburi route.
Alternatively, take a minivan from Kanchanaburi to Sangkhlaburi.
Get off at Mallika City (32 km), located near the PTT gas station at the entrance to Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park.

Option 2: Train

Take a train from Bangkok to Nam Tok Railway Station.
From Nam Tok, take a taxi or songthaew (shared taxi) to Mallika City (approximately 1 hour).

The journey from Bangkok to Mallika City takes approximately 4-5 hours by bus and 3-4 hours by train.
It is recommended to book your bus or train tickets in advance, especially during peak season.

Although Mallika City is expansive, spending the entire day there might be excessive. Therefore, we planned to arrive at Mallika City at 2 pm to allow for an extended stroll until the evening. Subsequently, we intend to have dinner and watch a performance in the early evening.

The difference between arriving in the morning and afternoon is significant. In the morning, we can witness the daily routines of the villagers in Mallika, who wake up early to cook, prepare goods for sale, and open their shops. However, if we arrive in the afternoon, we will encounter a different set of activities, which we will explore later.

When Ah Mui arrived at Mallika R.E. 124, she exclaimed, "What is this place? Why is it so hot?"

It's really hot, isn't it? We're visiting in early April, so the weather is a bit warm. But don't worry, there are plenty of trees inside, so it should cool down as we walk around. First, we need to buy tickets at the entrance. The prices are reasonable, in our opinion. ## April 2017 Admission Fees: * Adults: 200 Baht / Children, Seniors, and Disabled: 100 Baht * Admission + Dinner + Show: Adults 700 Baht, Children 350 Baht (10% discount) ## Notes: * Children under 100 cm tall enter free. * Children between 100-130 cm tall and seniors aged 70 and above pay the child rate.

Today, we opted for the full option package, which includes admission, dinner, and a show, for a total price of 700 baht. However, we received a 10% discount, bringing the cost down to 630 baht per person. This means that after deducting the 200 baht admission fee, the cost for dinner and the show is 430 baht. We believe this is a good deal, as a decent dinner typically costs around 300-400 baht per person, and this includes a show as well. So, we decided to go for it.

We have our tickets, so it's time to enter the city. Ah Mui is being fussy, saying it's too hot to walk. Let's take a rickshaw then (the fare is 50 baht per ride).

To enter the city, one must first pass the gatekeeper.

The gatekeepers and the cart pullers waited at the entrance to collect tickets, while the city lord, with his impressive white beard and mustache, sat nearby.

Turnaround bridge

The bridge's name derives from its design. In the past, it was a single wooden plank spanning the canal, secured at one end and resting loosely at the other. When a boat needed to pass, the plank was rotated to allow passage. During the reign of King Rama V, the bridge was redesigned in the style of the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy. This new bridge was a wide, arched wooden structure with small shops lining both sides and a walkway in the center. King Rama V was fond of visiting this bridge to purchase imported dried fruits, such as dried persimmons and various other types.

The large Thai-style house served as a reception hall for distinguished guests of noblemen or wealthy merchants. The city layout, ticket booths, clothing change points, bathroom and surrounding area cleanliness, and security are all well-designed and maintained.
Oh!! You can't use modern money in the city. You have to exchange it for "satang ru" coins used in ancient times. There are exchange points both outside and inside Mallika City.

Drama

Some people have criticized the 200 baht entrance fee, not including the 150-300 baht Thai costume rental fee, as being expensive for some families. However, we see it this way: the rental fee for a Thai costume at a shop is usually 300-500 baht. If you don't want to spend money on renting a costume, you are not forced to. But if you want to feel immersed in the atmosphere, you can rent a costume. This issue should not be a cause for drama.

Cost: The entrance fee, ticket price, and food prices are reasonable in our opinion. Considering the long-term sustainability of such a business, it's important to support them. After all, they've put in a lot of effort. When we travel abroad, we're willing to pay more, so why not here?

Cons:

Limited shade: As the park is newly opened, there are not many mature trees, resulting in limited shade and sun exposure.
Inadequate staff: The staff in the changing rooms are limited, and the service needs improvement.
Lack of shaded resting areas: More shaded areas with seating are needed for visitors to rest and escape the sun.

Mallika R.E. 124 is a historical park that allows visitors to experience what life was like in Thailand during the Rattanakosin era. Mallika City is not suitable for... those who want to visit superficially, those who just want to take pictures in beautiful Thai costumes and then go home without wanting to learn anything. This is not a tourist attraction, but a place to learn about Thai culture during the reign of King Rama V, and they have posted a sign at the entrance.
