Whenever summer arrives, everyone thinks of the sea, including us. The sea in Thailand is the most beautiful, don't you think? If we could spend a night or two on an island, it would be amazing!
Just imagine: the pale blue seawater, the soft white sand, the sound of waves crashing on the shore, the sight of the big round sun setting into the sea, little crabs running on the beach. Wow! We can't stay still anymore. Let's go be islanders!
Thailand boasts numerous beaches and islands, making it difficult to choose the perfect island getaway. Reflecting on past experiences, we decided to revisit an island that left a lasting impression: Koh Mak.
While some may find revisiting the same destination unappealing, we believe that familiar places offer a unique charm. The beauty of nature is ever-changing, and even if its splendor may diminish over time, our personal connection to a place remains constant.
Our choice to return to Koh Mak stems from a previous visit six years ago. We felt that we hadn't fully experienced the island'sの魅力, and this time, we're determined to indulge in a relaxing seaside retreat.
Let's talk about the journey first! There are 3 routes to choose from to get to Trat, but let's take the route we chose.
We took the motorway, or Highway 7, to Chonburi. Then we took Highway 344 Chonburi-Klaeng, passing Ban Bueng and Klaeng. Then we turned left onto Highway 3, passing Chanthaburi until we reached Trat.
Once you enter Trat province, you will pass a checkpoint (with a large roof) and then you will come to a traffic light. Turn right and follow the road to Koh Chang Pier. Drive on and you will pass Ao Thammachat Pier, followed by Center Point Pier. Drive for another 4-5 kilometers and you will find the Krom Luang Pier. We will board the ship here!
This pier is the boarding point for the Lilawadee, Panan, and Suan Suk boats. Check with the resort beforehand to see which company's boat we can board.
Koh Mak Island Getaway: A Relaxing Escape
This passage describes a trip to Koh Mak Island, highlighting transportation options, travel time, and the choice of a leisurely island experience.
Transportation:
- Three ferry companies offer regular departures to Koh Mak.
- Speedboats cost 450 baht per person for a one-way trip and 900 baht for a round trip. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on sea conditions.
- Wooden boats offer a more relaxed option for 250 baht per person, with a travel time of around 3 hours. (Prices may vary).
Booking:
- Bookings can be made directly or through the resort. Prices remain the same regardless of the booking method.
- The author initially booked with Lilavadee Ferry but missed the boat. They then opted for Suan Suk Ferry, which, while less renowned, provided a safe and comfortable journey.
Island Life:
- The author chose a 2-night, 3-day stay on Koh Mak, aiming for a relaxing experience focused on enjoying the island's natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere.
Departing from Bangkok early in the morning, we encountered road construction, causing a delay in our arrival at the pier. Consequently, we missed our scheduled boat trip and arrived at the island close to four o'clock in the afternoon.
Upon arrival, we headed straight to our accommodations.
The room offers a stunning view of the sea.
After settling in, let's take a walk and explore the beach.
Baan Koh Mak Resort is located on Ao Khao, a secluded and peaceful bay. From Ao Khao, there is a road connecting to various beaches, making travel convenient.
This place is what we call "Drunk Corner" 5555++. It's a bar by the sea, you see!! So we're right to call it that, right??
Before we know it, it will be dusk. Let's go eat dinner first, and we'll talk about it again tomorrow morning.
Day Two: The Journey Begins…
Waking up to the gentle caress of the morning sun and the refreshing sea breeze, I'm left speechless. The atmosphere is truly captivating, defying any attempt to describe it in mere words. It's a feeling that resonates with the saying, "It cannot be expressed in words."
Indeed, the experience is beyond description, demanding personal immersion to fully grasp its essence. In short, it's simply magnificent.
I originally planned to relax at the resort and not go anywhere, but there was something that made me change my mind and leave the resort. That's because if I came here and didn't eat delicious seafood, it would be like I didn't come to the sea at all.
And so, we rented a motorbike from the resort and went for a spin! The motorbike rental was 300 baht per day, but a friend from the same resort whispered that the shops outside the resort were only 200 baht. But!!! It was too late, haha.
I heard that if you come to the island, you have to eat seafood at Koh Mak Seafood. How could I miss it? Let's go!!!
Image of a person sitting at a desk with a computer and a book open in front of them.
The restaurant selection was spot on! The seafood here is incredibly fresh and lives up to its reputation and price. The flavors are not overly bold, but rather delicate. If you have the chance, be sure to stop by and try it for yourself - it's delicious!
After filling our bellies, we decided to take a walk to digest. However, the afternoon sun was a bit strong, so we opted for a shady path. Haha!
We stopped by Ao Suan Yai, a long beach that also serves as the departure point for boats to Koh Mak Resort. This beach is quite lively and bustling, unlike some of the quieter ones.
After a while of avoiding the sun, it's time to head back to our accommodation before we get too sunburnt. Who says people are afraid of the sun at the beach? We're not afraid of the sun, but we are afraid of getting tanned! 555+++
Excuse me while I go find a sun lounger to lie on and soak up the sun!

While I was napping, I suddenly felt an itch. Oh my god! Something bit me! At first, I thought it was a mosquito, but the villagers told me it wasn't. Oh no!
It was a "sea louse," also known as a "tongue worm." It's tiny but fierce, and it bit me so hard that my legs are covered in marks. The local auntie told me not to scratch, because some people are allergic and it can get infected. I want to tell her that "I already scratched it," and I hope I win this battle. 555+++
The last day for a castaway....
Hehe! I became a full-fledged islander because of the sea louse. I woke up and saw my legs covered in marks and huge bumps! It's a souvenir to take home.
Before leaving, we had breakfast at the resort. The food here is just as delicious as anywhere else. I even saw guests from other resorts coming here to eat.
Next, we need to go to the pier to board the Suan Suk boat. The pier offers a free shuttle service. While waiting for the shuttle, I took some time to capture the beauty of Koh Mak to preserve the memories.
Oh! And don't forget the sea slugs!
Next time you come back, you sea louse! You won't taste a drop of my blood. I'll bring insect repellent with me, you pest!
The sea helps to relieve feelings of fatigue. When you feel like you're running out of energy, the sea is a place that's ready to fill you up.
I don't like saying goodbye, but I'm sure we'll meet again.
The feeling that's happening right now, I've completely fallen in love with the sea.
Goodbye! See you on the next trip!
Thank you for stopping by and reading.
