Bangkok City Library has been a hot topic on social media throughout April 2017. The library was opened for a trial period before Songkran and officially opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 28, 2017.
Let's take a look at the newly opened City Library and see what it has to offer.
The Bangkok City Library, under the supervision of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is located at the Khok Wua Intersection on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road. It was established "to promote learning and knowledge development, allowing citizens to independently research and find information in various fields of knowledge. It also serves as a learning center based on the principles of the King's philosophy, the sufficiency economy philosophy, and the unique history and cultural heritage of Bangkok in all its aspects."
With such a magnificent concept, how spectacular will the actual construction be? Let's take a look inside! ^^
Upon entering the building, guests are greeted by a spacious lobby. The information desk and membership counter are located directly ahead. To the left of these services is the automated entry and exit point, while to the right is the luggage storage room.
Accessing the City Library: A Seamless Experience
Entering the City Library is a breeze for Thai citizens. Simply present your national ID card at the automated gate and you're in! (Finally, a smart use for our ID cards!)
If you're interested in becoming a library member, your membership card can be used in place of your national ID card, offering the same level of access.
For international visitors or those without a national ID card (who are expected to flock to the library due to its proximity to tourist hotspots like Khao San Road), fret not! You can still access the library by contacting the information desk to obtain a temporary access card. This card grants you the same entry privileges as national ID cards and library membership cards.
The library's opening hours are as follows:
- Tuesday - Saturday: 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM
- Sunday: 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM
- Monday and public holidays: Closed
In addition, I would like to share the process of applying for membership at the City Library. I have inquired with the staff and the steps are quite simple. Just follow these three steps to complete the process.
1. Submit a membership application form at the City Library or fill out an online application form via the website http://www.psclib.com/bma/opac_css/subscribe.php
(If you have any problems with membership application, you can contact [email protected])
2. Documents required for membership application (use any one of the following documents, no need to submit all of them)
- Copy of ID card
- Copy of government employee ID card
- Copy of student ID card
- Copy of certificate from educational institution
- Copy of passport
3. Membership fees
- For those under 15 years old, the annual fee is 5 baht and the book insurance fee is 20 baht per person.
- For those over 15 years old, the annual fee is 10 baht and the book insurance fee is 40 baht per person.
Note: The library staff has announced that membership applications are only accepted during business hours, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Please remember this information if you plan to apply for membership to avoid disappointment. While membership cards may not be issued immediately, you can still use the library services without any problems.
Due to safety policies, large bags or luggage are not allowed inside the City Library. Visitors with such items will be asked to store them at the baggage storage room, which is staffed by an attendant at all times.
While luggage storage services are available, it is highly recommended to bring only a small cloth bag/purse or a laptop sleeve for a more convenient experience at the City Library.
After successfully registering for a library membership card and storing our belongings, we attempted to use our national identification cards to pass through the automatic gate. During this period, there were some hiccups. The card reader sometimes worked normally, sometimes slowly, and sometimes not at all. However, there were staff members present to assist us throughout the process.
Upon entering through the automatic door, look to your right to find the computer for searching books. Before using it, you must first request a computer access code from the librarian at the information desk, located just before the entrance. (Although it may seem a bit complex, you can request the code from behind the information desk.)
For convenience, users can also use the online book search system at http://www.psclib.com/bma/opac_css/. This allows you to easily search for books using your mobile phone.
The city library offers a convenient self-service borrowing and returning system using automated machines.
The city library is divided into four floors. You can choose to walk up or down the stairs, which is spacious and allows you to exercise at the same time. Alternatively, you can use the elevator, which is also available for people with disabilities who need to use wheelchairs. There are also spare wheelchairs available, making it a truly accessible service for everyone.
The first floor of the City Library is designed according to the concept of "Following the King's Path, Following the Light of Wisdom." It is divided into an exhibition area for rotating knowledge content covering art, culture, traditions, history, and society.
Upon entering through the automatic doors, you will be greeted by a spacious reading hall.
To the left of the automatic door is the Tourist Information Service Point of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Tourism Division.
If you're looking for places to visit in Bangkok, feel free to ask for information. ^^
To the right of the reading hall is a magazine area where you can relax and read. Looking up, you will see a chandelier resembling an infinity symbol, cascading down from the top floor, sparkling and eye-catching.
It suggests that the pursuit of knowledge is endless and boundless.
Upon entering, you will be greeted by a rotating exhibition space showcasing knowledge encompassing art, culture, traditions, history, and society. The current exhibition, "Wandering Imagination in the World of Books," offers a visually captivating and informative experience.
The film screening room concludes the first floor.
The area is currently marked as "Do Not Enter," but it is expected that interesting things will be available for viewing in the future. Stay tuned!
Upon reaching the M floor, the information desk of the City Library explains that it is designed according to the concept of "When children follow the light of wisdom". It is an area that collects books, literature for children and young adults, a children's library for early childhood, and learning activities for families.
A perfect place to bring your children and grandchildren during the holidays. It offers a wide range of books, computers, toys, appliances, and activity areas.
Passing through the youth area, it leads to the translated literature section, which looks as spacious and comfortable as ever. ^^
The second floor houses the Public Relations Information Center of the City Library, which is designed according to the concept of "The World Celebrates the Royal Majesty, Flourishing Amity of the Metropolis." It serves as a space that collects information about capital cities around the world, books from embassies in Thailand, and books from Bangkok's sister cities.
This class focuses on foreign language books, books from neighboring ASEAN countries, and investment knowledge books donated by the Maruey Library, the Stock Exchange of Thailand. We would like to express our gratitude for this opportunity.
The reading area in this floor is still spacious as usual. However, what makes it special compared to other floors is that it also offers study rooms. If you come with a group, you can borrow the room for meetings.
The third floor of the City Library's Public Relations Information Center is designed according to the concept of "Learning Center of the King's Science." It serves as a space that collects knowledge in various fields and royal projects of King Rama IX, covering nine major categories: urban planning, transportation systems, environment, arts and culture, convenience and safety, medicine, economy and well-being, education system and integration, and inter-agency cooperation. In addition, there are documents, printed materials, and audiovisual materials related to Bangkok, as well as special books produced by Bangkok's agencies.
The majority of the space is dedicated to exhibitions showcasing knowledge in various fields and the royal initiatives of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Deeply moved by the boundless royal grace, truly missing His Majesty.
Another highlight of this floor is the rare book section, where many books are believed to be truly unseen before.
From this point, when looking out at the various pages, you will find a panoramic view of the Bang Lamphu community like this ^^
This classroom also contains a collection of books on the Chakri Dynasty, special publications produced by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and reference books.
The books are all interesting and worth reading. Highly recommended!
The exhibition hall serves as the final stop for this floor. The key highlights of this room include a replica of the giant swing pillar and a cross-section of teak wood. This specific teak tree is the same one used to construct the actual giant swing pillar that stands tall in front of Bangkok City Hall today.
Despite its seemingly modest exterior, the city library boasts a spacious interior with ample usable space. Visitors can easily spend hours exploring the library's vast collection. Information desks are available on every floor to assist patrons with their inquiries. However, with only two staff members stationed on each floor, who are responsible for a wide range of tasks, including collecting used books and reshelving them, it is possible that patrons may encounter brief waiting periods when seeking assistance.
The air conditioning in the city library is refreshingly cool, making the spacious area even more comfortable. The pleasant atmosphere is perfect for spending the whole day relaxing without having to go anywhere else. Even if you need to use the restroom, there are clean and tidy facilities available on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors.
Based on a three-hour observation of the City Library, it appears that the number of books is relatively small compared to the available space. The automated entry and exit system, as well as the automated book borrowing and returning system, are not yet fully functional. When questioned, staff acknowledged the issues and stated that they are working to resolve them as quickly as possible to ensure the satisfaction of all users. We commend the staff for their efforts and hope for a swift resolution to these challenges.
Bangkok boasts a wealth of stunning tourist attractions, drawing over ten million visitors annually from across the globe. Its captivating charm and unforgettable experiences consistently rank it among the world's top tourist destinations.
It is firmly believed that this city library will become a new recreational space for Bangkok residents and a new tourism option for international visitors.
