The allure of the unknown: Embracing the journey on Thailand's modernized railways
The once-familiar phrase "whether we arrive or not, it doesn't matter" is gradually fading into the past for modern-day rail travel in Thailand. This shift is driven by the State Railway of Thailand's introduction of new trains on four major routes, totaling 115 carriages. As with any novelty, curiosity beckons, and this new fleet presents an enticing option for travelers who relish the journey as much as the destination.
Today, we embark on a fresh exploration of the familiar, delving into the novel experiences offered by these modernized trains on Thailand's well-trodden railway lines.
The journey began with an urgent need, leading me to travel on the newest train line in Thailand, .. Utarawithi .. with the Special Express Train 9 Bangkok - Chiang Mai. I boarded at Ayutthaya Railway Station and my destination was Sila Asan Railway Station (my hometown).
I mostly travel alone because it gives me a different kind of experience. I don't have to worry about how my travel companions feel, and I can do whatever I want. It feels better, in my opinion.
While waiting, I walked around and did some shopping. It happened to be the day of the government lottery draw, and a kind vendor was giving away free crepes. I received one as well. Note: The vendor was young, but she gave away free crepes until they ran out because it was the day of the lottery draw. Some people might have run out of money because of the lottery, so she gave them away for free. I think it's a good thing. She's a good thinker and a good doer. It's hard to find these days.
Train number 9 arrived at Ayutthaya Railway Station at 9:06 PM, marking the start of my new adventure.
The side of the train will display information in white letters, including the train number, carriage number, departure station, and arrival station. This information is provided for the convenience of passengers. If passengers are unsure of their destination, staff will be available to assist them in disembarking.
The entrance is secured by an automatic gate, providing a high level of security. To enter, simply touch the green arrow lightly, and the gate will open automatically. The process is effortless and convenient.
This is the sleeping area. The upper area is for storing luggage weighing no more than 10 kilograms. The lower area is the sleeping area for passengers. The image shows a second-class carriage.
The train is well-equipped with amenities to ensure a comfortable and safe journey. Security cameras monitor the train throughout the trip, providing passengers with peace of mind. Additionally, display screens inform passengers of upcoming stations, estimated arrival times, and the current outside temperature. This information allows passengers to prepare for their arrival and inform those who will be meeting them of their estimated arrival time.
The sleeping area is equipped with electrical outlets for charging electronic devices and reading lights for passengers' convenience during their journey.
Travelers with disabilities can rest assured that the facility is accessible and provides support services, ensuring a safe and worry-free journey.
The next section is the dining car, which is located in the middle of the train. It is very clean and has a lot of customers. The food is the type that is microwaved and then eaten. It is not expensive. Drinks are also available. There are seats for the general public.
Additionally, there are seats available for people with disabilities, offering the same level of comfort.
The menu is available at your table. Once you have chosen your meal, please proceed to the service counter to order and pay. Your food will then be brought to your table.
For me, I'd like to order a plate of green curry chicken fried rice with a fried egg and a Coke, please.
Here's my food. It looks good, tastes good, and the atmosphere is good. It's okay.
After finishing our meal, it was time to rest. The room had curtains, but the bright lights might make it difficult to sleep. However, if you are tired enough, like I was, you can sleep comfortably.
I slept for less than 3 hours before arriving at the final destination, Sila Asan Railway Station. The total travel time from Ayutthaya Railway Station was approximately 6 hours, arriving at around 3:00 AM. The train was clean, safe, and fast.
