Before we delve into the specifics of Yanagawa, it is important to first provide a brief introduction to this relatively unknown small town.

Yanagawa, an often overlooked city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu region, offers a glimpse into a slower pace of life. Despite its relative obscurity, the city's charm lies in its traditional lifestyle, with residents residing along waterways and engaging in simple activities like boat rides to admire the Japanese houses lining the canals. This tranquil atmosphere provides a unique and captivating experience for visitors.

Traveling to Yanagawa is convenient. Take a train from Nishitetsu-Tenjin Station to Yanagawa Station, which takes approximately 50 minutes. For a cost-effective option, consider purchasing the "Yanagawa – Dazaifu" package ticket for 2,930 yen.

As the train departed from Nishitetsu-Tenjin Station, the scenery gradually transitioned from towering modern buildings to quaint villages and serene fields, offering a more relaxing view.

The train will pass through Futsukaichi Station, where you can transfer to Dazaifu. You can start your trip from Dazaifu and then return to Yanagawa, or you can go directly to Yanagawa and then return to Dazaifu.

After approximately 50 minutes, the train will arrive in Yanagawa. If you have purchased the "Yanagawa – Dazaifu" package, you can walk to the front of the station and wait for the shuttle bus. The shuttle bus runs continuously between the train station and the boat boarding point, taking only 10-15 minutes. You will then arrive at the "donkobune" boat ride, the highlight of this city.

Navigating the small canals that crisscross the city is not only popular with tourists. On occasion, we may also see Japanese couples enjoying a romantic boat ride amidst this enchanting atmosphere.

Despite the seemingly sullen expression, the elderly man is actually singing a song.
The boatmen here appear to be mostly senior citizens. It is likely that this is a way to promote employment opportunities for older people in the local community or those who have retired. Working in this way instead of staying at home seems to bring joy to the elderly men.

The banks of the canal are lined with cherry blossom trees, creating a breathtaking spectacle of blooming flowers during the boat ride.

The boat ride here is not just about sightseeing. There are some sections where you have to pass through narrow channels like this, which can be a little exciting. You might wonder if the boat will hit something or if it will make it through. Every time the boat passes through one of these sections, the people on board scream with excitement.
