"Rainbow Mist Waterfall" in Kapoe District, Ranong Province, is a hidden waterfall nestled deep within a lush forest. Reaching it is no easy feat, requiring an 11-kilometer roundtrip hike.

This trip was booked in April and took place between July 9-10, 2017 (2 days and 1 night). Our group consisted of 7 people. We started our journey from Bangkok and stopped in Ranong to visit and shop for one night.

On the first day, we purchased and prepared supplies in Ranong town before traveling to the Chiew Liang Ranger Station in the Klong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary, Kapoe District. Our group met with the officers there, approximately 60 kilometers from Ranong town. It was easily accessible using GPS navigation.

At this point, we will switch to a pickup truck provided by the staff. We will begin our hike around 9:00 AM.

The initial section of the trail follows the edge of the waterfall, crossing streams until reaching the campsite. Our group arrived at approximately 12:00 PM.

We took a lunch break at the camp, set up our hammocks and flysheets, and then set off for the waterfall. The path to the waterfall was quite steep, with an incline of 45 degrees or more for about 1 kilometer. We also had to rappel down the waterfall, which had an incline of 60-70 degrees or more. It was so steep that we completely forgot about the walk to the camp! It took us about an hour to reach the waterfall, and the rain made the path slippery and slowed us down even more.

The waterfall is amazing! The water is so cold and refreshing, it's like being a kid again. We had a blast playing in the water.

Typically, there are two options for hiking: in the afternoon, if you arrive at the camp early, you can hike to the waterfall directly; or in the morning of the next day. However, our group chose to hike in the afternoon of the first day.

"Day two" was relaxed. We woke up late, had coffee and breakfast, packed our things, and headed back... Done and dusted!

Preparation, Equipment, and Recommendations:

Essentials:

  • Hammock: Due to the unsuitable terrain for tents, a hammock is highly recommended.
  • Waterproof bags or pouches: Protect your belongings from the frequent rain.
  • Leech socks: While leeches are not abundant, they are present.
  • Tarp: Essential for shelter during intermittent rain showers.
  • GoPro camera: Capture the stunning scenery.

Additional Considerations:

  • No restrooms: Be prepared for the lack of toilet facilities.
  • Drinking water: Obtain water from the stream.
  • Gloves: Provide grip and protection while navigating the waterfall.
  • Studded hiking boots: Offer optimal traction on the challenging terrain.

Expenses
- Staff fee: 1,200 baht per person, team leader 1,400 baht / Our group uses 4 people
- Car rental fee: Pick-up and drop-off from the protection unit to the walking point 500 baht
