The Enchanting Village of E-Tong: A Journey Through Mist and Time

Nestled amidst the majestic Pilok Mountains in Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province, lies the quaint village of E-Tong. Originally known as "Nat-E-Tong," meaning "Home of the Mountain Gods," the village's name evolved over time to its present form.

E-Tong's history is intertwined with the rise and fall of the wolfram and tin mining industry. Once a thriving mining town, the closure of the mines in 1985 left behind a legacy of abandoned structures and a sense of nostalgia. Yet, amidst the remnants of the past, E-Tong retains its tranquil charm, offering visitors a glimpse into a simpler way of life.

The village is enveloped in a perpetual mist, creating an ethereal atmosphere that invites contemplation and serenity. The scent of fresh earth and the sound of gentle rain paint a vivid picture of nature's embrace. The harmonious coexistence of Thai and Burmese communities adds to the village's cultural richness.

A visit to E-Tong promises an unforgettable experience. The allure of the mist-shrouded mountains, the tranquility of the surroundings, and the warmth of the local people create a captivating tapestry that leaves a lasting impression.

Let's embark on a journey through E-Tong, exploring its hidden treasures and uncovering the reasons why this village has captured my heart.

  • 03:00 PM: Arrived at E-Tong Village.

The drive up was accompanied by rain and fog, creating a beautiful and surreal atmosphere. It felt like entering a world of mist and enchantment. The scenery was breathtaking. It's definitely worth experiencing.

Note: The road has some potholes and bumps, so drive carefully. The winding roads with over 300 curves are a thrilling experience, but be cautious.

We have arrived at E-tong Village, a village shrouded in mist. The scenery is breathtaking.
It's time to gather our belongings and head to our room. Are you curious about where I'm staying with this incredible view? I'll reveal it later.
After settling in, it's time to explore the area and see what it has to offer. However, all we can see is fog. Let's take a closer look.

The thick fog descends, its tendrils caressing our skin.

The darkness has thickened, but it's beautiful in a different way, don't you think?
After walking for a while, I'm starting to feel hungry and sleepy. I'm going to find something to eat first, and then I'll see you tomorrow morning! Haha!

Day 02
July 31, 2017

Good morning! The fog is very thick.
I woke up the first time, the fog was still thick, so I went back to sleep.
I woke up the second time, the fog was still thick, so I went back to sleep.
I woke up many times, but the fog was still thick. If I went down, I wouldn't be able to take any pictures anyway.

Around ten o'clock, the fog started to thin out. My stomach started to growl. I took a shower, got dressed, and went down to take some pictures and relax. It's time to find something to eat and enjoy ourselves.

Is this the atmosphere of the abandoned hotel? If you read the reviews, many of them will have this point. It is definitely shown in every review. Because the atmosphere of the fog is light, the rain is light, the atmosphere is like being in Switzerland. It's really like that.
After taking the picture, we walked into the Pilok Mine.

The name "Pilok Mine" is a corruption of its original name. In the past, fierce battles were fought between Thais and foreigners, resulting in numerous casualties. The village became deserted and was subsequently referred to as the "Haunted Mine," which eventually evolved into the present-day "Pilok Mine."

The interior of the mine features remnants of vehicles and mining equipment from the past, providing photo opportunities for visitors. Notably, the water within the mine is remarkably clear, as evident in the provided image.

There is also a waterfall, which looks really fun to play in.

After exiting the mine, we arrived at a scenic spot where everyone takes photos. The air was fresh and the scenery was beautiful and refreshing. Let's take a look and see how good it is.

Let's take a peek and see what they're writing about.

I can't read this. It's in Thai.

After taking photos for a while, I started to feel hungry. This is brunch, not breakfast, haha. I woke up too late to eat breakfast. The recommended menu includes a delicious spicy salad and a tasty fried egg dish. You should definitely try it! The restaurant is called Krua Jeh Nee. This meal was very filling. You might be wondering why I ate so much. It's because we're going to hike up the mountain to conquer the Neung Chang Suk Hill. It's really high!

Let's conquer the Neung Chang Suk Hill together, a 1.2 km trek that will leave you breathless. But trust me, the view is worth it. Just wait and see!

The first view reveals a village nestled amidst towering mountains.

Looking left, there is fog.

Looking back, there is only fog.

Looking to the right, there is fog.

Looking ahead, we exclaimed, "Wow, we've reached Elephant Tusk Hill!"
We were grateful for the clear skies that allowed us to enjoy the view. We had almost given up hope of seeing it.

Do you see that mountain over there? That's Khao Chang Phuak, the one everyone wants to conquer, including me. I want to go, I want to go.

The more you look, the more you are captivated.

The fog finally descended, signaling the end of our climb. As I began my descent, a series of events unfolded. With a sudden "tick-tock" sound, I found myself slipping, crashing to the ground. Thankfully, the camera survived the fall. My initial concern for the camera's well-being was quickly replaced by a sense of relief as I realized I was unharmed. Regaining my composure, I cautiously continued my descent, reaching the bottom safely, albeit covered in mud.

Me: Hey dog, can I take a picture of you?
Dog: Sure, human.
Me: Look at the camera.
Dog: I'm looking. I'm also giving you a smoldering look. Is that good enough, human?
Me: You look great (Wait, is it a boy or a girl? I forgot to check, haha).

Return to the room to change clothes.
Continue taking photos while walking. Initially, I planned to walk to the flagpole hill, but judging from my current condition, I'm sure I won't be able to make it. I'll just walk around the camping area.

The view here is truly breathtaking, offering endless photo opportunities.

A way of life that coexists with nature.

The evening has begun, the fog is rolling in, and the atmosphere is incredibly pleasant.

Enveloped in mist, left and right, front and back.

Day 03
01.08.2560

I don't want to go back yet, but I have to. It breaks my heart every time I have to leave, from the place I wanted to go the most. I'll just keep it in my memory and come back again.

At 6:30 AM, the atmosphere was serene as monks walked for alms, accompanied by the rhythmic chanting of young novices.

On the way back, I took the yellow songthaew, the same route as before, from Thong Pha Phum to Ban E Tong. The last bus leaving Ban E Tong is at 7:30 AM. Remember, 7:30 AM is the last bus leaving Ban E Tong. Make a note of it, or you'll miss the bus, I'm telling you.
