The Enchanting Khood Khuu: A Must-Visit in Chiang Khan

Following our breathtaking sunrise and sea of mist experience at Ep2 on Phu Tok, we embarked on a thrilling ride to another unmissable destination in Chiang Khan: the captivating Khood Khuu.

Khud Khu Waterfall: A Natural Wonder in Thailand

Khud Khu Waterfall is a majestic natural wonder in Thailand, formed by a rocky outcrop stretching across the Mekong River. This impressive waterfall boasts numerous large boulders, polished smooth and vibrant in color due to their long submersion in the river. The vast expanse of the waterfall nearly reaches both banks of the Mekong, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Located on the same road as Phu Tok, Khud Khu Waterfall lies approximately 3 kilometers from Chiang Khan district. Its proximity to other natural attractions makes it an ideal destination for exploring the region's scenic beauty.

Coming here has allowed me to experience a way of life that is still simple and authentic.

A life that is truly connected with nature.

We followed the signs until we arrived at our destination.

As it was still early morning, many shops were not yet open. The view from the top of Kaeng Kud Ku allowed us to see a panoramic view of the rapids, including the other side of the Mekong River.

A staircase leads us down to the nearby rapids. There are not many tourists this morning, and the fog is descending beautifully. It's so cool.

This is a blank paragraph.

The descending fog resembles a sea of mist at times.

As we approach the end of December, the Mekong River's water level has receded, revealing islands and vast white sand beaches.

These rapids, while historically posing challenges to navigation on the Mekong, have also served as abundant habitats for fish.

The legend of "Kaeng Kut Ku" tells the story of a hunter named "Jueang Khueang Dang Daeng," a tall and muscular man skilled in hunting. One day, the hunter tracked a silver buffalo from Luang Prabang (called a silver buffalo because its dung was silver). Upon reaching the Mekong River, he saw the silver buffalo resting and drinking water. The hunter ambushed and shot the buffalo. At that moment, villagers sailed past in a boat, startling the silver buffalo, which fled up a hill (later named "Phu Kwai Ngern"). The hunter shot the buffalo again, causing a part of the hill to collapse, creating a steep cliff known as "Phu Pha Baen."

Angered by the villagers who caused the silver buffalo to escape, the hunter retaliated by piling rocks in the Mekong River to obstruct navigation. As the hunter neared completion, a young novice monk witnessed his actions. The novice tricked the hunter into using split bamboo poles ("hia") to carry the rocks. The sharp edges of the split bamboo poles cut the hunter's neck, causing him to die at the edge of the Mekong River. The rocky area where he died became known as "Kaeng Kut Ku."

We were fortunate to arrive during the low tide, revealing numerous small islands and islets against the backdrop of the towering "Khao Kwai Ngern" mountain, shrouded in intermittent mist.

We watched a boat slowly depart from the rapids, its destination unknown. Perhaps it was going fishing, or perhaps it was crossing to the other side of the Mekong River. We don't know where it was going, but watching this way of life made us realize that life is simple. It only requires simplicity and what we have. What we have is enough.

We waited until the sun came up, it was like a vanilla sky.

As you walk back up, you'll notice more tourists and vendors setting up shop. There's a variety of food available, from fish, shrimp, and shellfish, all bearing the Mekong River name, to papaya salad, grilled chicken, larb, and waterfalls. You can enjoy your meal right by the Mekong River.

If you want to release fish for good luck, there are vendors selling them as well.

To get to Kaeng Kud Ku, you can rent a skylab car or a motorbike.

You can also rent a motorbike from your accommodation in Chiang Khan.

We recommend visiting in the morning for an even more breathtaking experience. The descending mist creates an incredible atmosphere.

Witnessing the sunrise over the mountain ridge is an unforgettable sight.

If you have the opportunity to visit Chiang Khan, Loei Province, don't miss this stunning location.
