It was past four in the afternoon when we finally set off from the community by the Chanthaburi River. We drove aimlessly, even though there were signs pointing the way to Chao Lao Beach. Oh! I forgot to mention that today we will be staying at the "Chao Lao To Sang Beach Hotel" on Chao Lao Beach.
The road leading to Chaolao, which we drove on, was both narrow and under construction, with new asphalt being laid at intervals (I felt sorry for the car). We also had to cross two mountains on a two-lane road that was only wide enough for oncoming traffic. Fortunately, there were not many cars following or passing us, so we managed to get through another meal.
As the sun began to set, we arrived at Chaolao Toa Sang Beach. After checking into our hotel and storing our belongings, we ventured out to capture the breathtaking sunset. With dinner on our minds, we'll save the hotel review for later and dive straight into the exceptional dining experience that awaits.
It was already quite dark when we left the room. We had just driven in and were too lazy to drive out again. Besides, the hotel was quite full today, and it would be inconvenient if we couldn't find parking. So, we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant. It was a bit of a compromise, as in our experience, hotel restaurants, especially those with good views like this one, tend to be expensive and not very good. But we were tired and didn't want to go anywhere else.
The hotel's restaurant, aptly named "Sea Thru," evokes images of sheer, skin-tight clothing. However, the only thing "attached" to the beach here is the restaurant itself, as it sits directly on the beachfront of Chaolao Beach. With a large crowd and a buffet-style setup, we initially assumed the restaurant offered a buffet option, hoping to save some money. However, upon closer inspection, we discovered that the large group had arranged their own private buffet. We inquired about the price, and the staff informed us it was approximately 350 baht per person. We simply asked out of curiosity, as there were too many of us to consider joining.
We were seated in the middle of the restaurant, not by the beach or the walkway, but with a not-so-tall coconut tree above us. The two of us sat comfortably. The waiter brought us the menu. Hey!!! The prices weren't expensive. It must not be delicious, or maybe the portions are small. We tried to peek at the other tables, and their dishes didn't seem small. Let's try ordering some food.
(Top left) Bright green Chaolao Fantaci 179.- / (Top right) Beautiful purple Tosang dream 179.-
(Bottom left) Light brown, a recommended menu, can't remember the name 179.- /
(Bottom right) Punch is a Welcome Drink, which means it's FREE!!!
The menu featured several dishes with intriguing names, prompting me to inquire with the waiter for recommendations. I expressed my desire to sample the restaurant's signature dishes, local specialties, or dishes featuring local ingredients from Chanthaburi. The waiter suggested two options: Pla Pla Mueang Chanthaburi, which he described as having a flavor similar to a spicy salad, and Yum Saneh Chanthaburi, which incorporates the region's renowned "Chanthaburi noodles." Given my preference for lighter fare, I opted for both dishes.
Spicy minced fish salad with peanut sauce 150.-
Driven by our insatiable appetites, we ordered an additional dish: steamed seafood in a young coconut. While waiting for our meal, we decided to quench our thirst with some drinks. However, our appetites proved to be insufficient, leading us to order a staggering four different beverages. We simply couldn't resist the temptation.
Steamed sea bass with spicy lime dressing, served with peanut sauce.
The first thing served was a drink, but wait, I didn't order it. It was punch. The waiter said it was a welcome drink, and every table had one. Let me tell you, the first sip was amazing, so refreshing! That's where the "suuuuck" came from. It was sweet and sour, with a variety of fruits, and the best part was that it had pomegranate juice in it. The waiter said that it not only added color but also a familiar scent. No wonder it smelled so good!
Serve each bite on a ceramic spoon and drizzle with peanut sauce before eating.
The second and third glasses arrived together:
- Chaolao Fantacia: This vibrant green cocktail boasts a sweet and sour flavor, making it easy to drink and quick to induce intoxication due to its primary ingredients of tequila and Sprite.
- Tosang Dream: This beautiful purple mocktail offers a sweet and fragrant aroma, with a smoother taste than the Chaolao Fantacia thanks to its rum base. It's a delightful drink for those who prefer non-alcoholic options.
Both cocktails are priced at 179 THB.
Steamed seafood in young coconut 200.-
Soon after we settled in with our cocktails, the waiter arrived with our food. The "Pla Pla Muang Chan, Nam Jim Tua" (Spicy Minced Fish Salad with Peanut Sauce) was served in individual bites on ceramic spoons. The shredded white fish was mixed with fragrant herbs, chopped shallots, and lemongrass, and the aroma of lime filled the air. The highlight, however, was the peanut sauce drizzled over the fish salad. Not only was it deliciously sweet and salty, but it also had a delightful crunch from the finely ground peanuts and sugar added by the chef. This combination created a perfect balance of sour, salty, sweet, and aromatic flavors, further enhanced by the satisfying texture of the crunchy peanut bits. This dish was a true gem, and I give it a well-deserved 4 stars.
Fully equipped
The next dish was a large serving of "seafood steamed in young coconut," which was served in young coconuts that were not too young to have no flesh and not too old to be hard as a rock. I must say that I have never eaten such delicious steamed fish (I usually don't like it). The fragrant curry paste mixed with the young coconut gave a sweet and savory flavor that was initially confusing, as I thought it contained ground peanuts like the dipping sauce for satay, as it had a similar flavor but was much spicier and more fragrant with curry. So I asked the waiter, who said that there were no peanuts in it, it must be the strong flavor of the curry paste. All the ingredients, including shrimp, fish, and squid, were fresh and in large pieces. The vegetables in the steamed fish did not look wilted, but looked fresh and still had the crisp texture of fresh vegetables. I was going to skip the rice, but I ended up having to order some. Of course, I gave this dish 4 stars as usual. When I saw the price, I wanted to give it another star (but I felt bad for the Hokkaido beef that I gave 5 stars to). So I'll give it another half star, 200 baht. Personally, I think it's cheap.
Intense, full to the brim, almost overflowing
Artfully arrange vegetables to decorate the plate beautifully and stylishly.
Charm of the Moon Salad 180.-
The long-awaited dish finally arrived: the intriguingly named "Yำเสน่ห์จันทน์" (Yำ Saneh Chan). This dish features Chanthaburi's famous "เส้นจันทน์" (rice noodles) tossed with shrimp and squid, dressed in a vibrant and tangy sauce. For those who crave an extra kick, a wedge of lime and a side of "ถั่วตัด" (crushed peanuts) are provided. However, the chef's balanced blend of flavors, with a dominant sourness followed by a hint of salt, sweetness, and a mild spiciness, proved to be perfect for my palate. I would rate this dish 4 stars.
The third cocktail, an amber-colored concoction, was recommended by the bartender who noticed my fondness for mixed drinks. Though I've forgotten its name, I recall it was a blend of various whiskeys mixed with Coke and served over ice. The taste resembled whiskey and Coke, but with a more fragrant and sweeter profile. It was a flavor worth remembering.
Crafted with renowned "Sen Chan" noodles from Chanthaburi, this dish is a medley of fresh ingredients tossed in a vibrant and flavorful dressing. The perfect balance of sour, sweet, and salty notes tantalizes the taste buds, creating an unforgettable culinary experience.
Served with chopped peanuts and fresh lime for seasoning to your preference.
In reality, it wasn't seasoned, so it tasted good as it was, so I ended up eating the chopped peanuts as a snack.
As the fragrant coconut-infused seafood steamed in banana leaves dwindled, the spicy and tangy fish salad from Chanthaburi had already vanished, leaving only empty spoons and dipping sauce cups. To restore balance to the table, we ordered a plate of crab omelet to accompany the remaining rice, ensuring a harmonious culinary experience.
For a mere thousand baht, you can enjoy a delightful evening dining by the sea. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is delicious, the cocktails are top-notch, and the music is soothing. Overall, I would rate the Sea Thru restaurant, its food, and its drinks a 4.5 out of 5.
After a delicious dinner, the group enjoyed lively conversations with each other and the waiter, exchanging critiques, sharing travel anecdotes, discussing the food, and receiving recommendations for local attractions and restaurants. As the night wore on, it became clear that they had spent nearly half the night engaged in conversation. Exhausted but content, they decided to call it a night and rest up for the next day's adventures. See you tomorrow!
Slap your butt with coffee, then go to sleep. Bye.
