The Ebenalp mountain range and the 0-star Aescher mountain Inn are located in the charming small town of Appenzell.

The journey by train from Zurich takes 2 hours to reach the final destination of Wasserauen station. Then, change to the Apenzellenbahn train at Gossau station.

The Gossau station will be served by the Apenzellenbahn train at platform 11/12.

The Apenzellenbahn train continues to its destination, Wasserauen.

Along the route of this train line, we will not describe anything, but we ask you to look at the pictures for inspiration. Even though they were not taken by a professional, they are still beautiful because the stations are stunning.

From Wasserauen station, you can see the Ebenalp cable car station. We will take the cable car up.
On the way back, if we want to visit the lake, we have to hike down. The cable car fare to Ebenalp
can be discounted with a Swiss Pass, which is about 19 ch. Let's walk to the cable car station.

Wasserauen station is a small station with a pleasant atmosphere.

Exiting the building, we saw a sign pointing to the left. We walked uphill, leading to the restaurant above. Alternatively, turning right and going downhill would lead to the path below. However, we opted for the left path first.

Looking down from the hilltop restaurant, you can see the panoramic view of Appenzell town and the cable car station we just rode up from. It's breathtakingly vast, stretching as far as the eye can see. Up on the hilltop, there's a restaurant with an incredible view. We had lunch there, just buying bottled water to drink. We brought our own food, but the view was simply amazing.

It's time to descend. We walk back to the cable car station at the original signpost and then follow the path down the mountain. No need for much description, just enjoy the view. Walk down the stairs next to the cable car station.

From the cable car station, look for the sign "Wildkirchli-Ascher". The path will descend along the slope, opposite the direction of the ascending cable car. Follow the signs as you walk, and you will find yourself on a path that winds along the cliff face. The descent takes approximately 2 hours.

As you descend, you will encounter the Wildkirchli Caves. Upon reaching the cave entrance, proceed inside. The interior is somewhat dark and slippery, but handrails are provided for support. Within, you will discover wall art and stone arrangements, the meaning of which remains unknown.

A short walk will lead you to the Aescher Hotel, which boasts stunning views. Perched on a cliff face at an altitude of 1,454 meters, the hotel is open from May to October and can accommodate only 50 guests. The on-site restaurant is always bustling with customers. Restrooms are available along the trail. I have personally visited this establishment and can attest to its charm.

Our original destination was Seealpsee, but we took a wrong turn. The correct path to the lake was to the right, as shown in the picture with the elderly couple. However, we went left instead. This led us down a path that cut through the forest. Although it was a bit off-road, we eventually found the entrance to the lake, which we decided to save for a future trip.

This way down leads to the forest. Let's see the way down. Haha.

This is the gate we walked out of. If you want to visit the lake without climbing the mountain, you can enter through this gate.

The return path also offers beautiful scenery and leads directly to the train station, making it an easy and straightforward walk without the risk of getting lost.
