The first sight that greets visitors is a community of old wooden houses along a canal, a sight that seems unbelievable given its proximity to the bustling metropolis. This hidden gem, known as the Hua Ta Khen Ancient Market Community, is located along the Praves Buri Rom Canal in the Lat Krabang district.
Khlong Prawet Buri Rom, a canal that, once crossed, feels like entering another world, quiet and peaceful.
We opted for an early Sunday morning visit, when most shops were still closed, creating a unique atmosphere.
**Historically,** this community was once prosperous, bustling with people due to its location at the intersection of three canals. It was a vibrant marketplace with a Chinese temple, a shrine, gold shops, pharmacies offering both Chinese and Thai medicine, and sawmills. In the past, people primarily traveled by boat. However, with the advent of modernization, people began using cars and roads instead, leading to the decline of this market over time.
Undeterred, the community has rallied to revitalize the market as a tourist destination, introducing cafes and restaurants while preserving the tranquility and traditional way of life that define its charm.
Some spots feature graffiti, offering opportunities for photo ops.
Houses in some communities have been converted into cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, and shops.
For those interested in visiting this community, you can go any day, but there will be fewer people on Saturdays and Sundays than on weekdays. If you want to take street art photos, you can go on Saturdays and Sundays without having to jostle with anyone.
