Bang! The sound of a gunshot echoed through the air.

A Weekend Getaway: Camping on the Panen Tung Hills

Looking for a quick escape from the city? Consider a weekend camping trip on the Panen Tung Hills, just a short distance from Bangkok. This easily accessible destination offers a peaceful retreat amidst nature.

Phaneun Thung is a unit within Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi Province, not far from Bangkok. You can easily get there by following the route. Our goal for the first day is to reach the summit of Phaneun Thung.

The highlight of our wildlife adventure was undoubtedly encountering the elusive creatures that call this place home. While I won't spoil the surprise of what we saw, I can assure you that we weren't disappointed. In fact, we were fortunate enough to spot two incredibly rare animals, considered true treasures of this region.

Let's go see the pictures! There are so many!

Reaching the summit of Phaneun Thung requires a pickup truck or 4WD vehicle due to the rough terrain, which is unsuitable for most passenger cars.

  • Pay the fee, inform the number of days to stay, the number of people. The park entrance fee here will be more expensive than other places, but I guarantee you will be satisfied.

  • There will be 2 camping areas:
  1. Ban Krang
  2. Pha Nen Thung
  • The ascent to the Pha Nen Thung camping area will have specific times for ascent and descent due to the narrow road.

For those without a pickup truck, you can rent a car from a local or wait in the morning for an official to call for people to share the cost of a ride up to Pha Nen Thung to see the sea of mist. You can also wait in front of the office to find people to share the ride with.

Beware of traffic when taking photos of the tree tunnel at the entrance.

A large troop of monkeys that we encountered upon our arrival.

A young monkey nibbles on tamarind seeds at the top of a tree, seemingly unafraid of humans. However, it is important to remember that we should not feed monkeys. Allowing them to forage for their own food is the most appropriate course of action.

A scenic spot for enjoying the sunset in the evening. You can easily walk here from the camping area.

Harmonious layers of rolling hills

Sleep under the stars at the campsite, greet fellow campers, get to know each other, and make new friends.

We encountered a dusky leaf monkey while going to the bathroom. This place is truly pristine. It was probably eating ripe figs nearby.

The first rare bird of this trip is the Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker.

Sea of mist at the viewpoint, Km. 36

Driving from Phanen Thung to Ban Krang, we encountered a spectacled langur. After surveying the road for both ascending and descending vehicles, we parked our car by the roadside and climbed onto the roof to capture some photos of the langur for your viewing pleasure.

The southern pied hornbill can be found in the vicinity of the camping grounds in both Ban Krang and Pha Nen Thung. They are very cute.

Rare Item: Black Gibbons at Kaeng Krachan

The black gibbon, a rare and endangered primate, can be found in the Kaeng Krachan National Park. This elusive creature is a true gem for wildlife enthusiasts and a testament to the park's rich biodiversity.
