After securing our trusty motorcycle for the trip from Joe Bike Motorcycle Rental in Chom Thong, a GT125 automatic, we initially planned to head straight to our accommodation. However, Joe suggested a detour to Mae Ya Waterfall before reaching the turnoff to our lodging, assuring us of the good road conditions and ease of access. Intrigued, we decided to take his advice and explore the waterfall.
Mae Ya Waterfall is located just over 13 kilometers from Wat Phra That Sri Chom Thong Worawihan, a short motorbike ride away. However, the light rain that fell intermittently made the journey a bit slower. Although the road conditions were good, caution was still required while driving.
Upon arriving at the entrance of the park, we noticed the absence of any park rangers collecting entrance fees. We proceeded along the clearly visible path, guided by the sound of rushing water. A voice clearly stated, "The water is strong today."
Mae Ya Waterfall is located in Doi Inthanon National Park. It was once considered the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand, but after the discovery of "Tee Lor Su Waterfall" in Tak Province, Mae Ya Waterfall has had to take second place. Mae Ya Waterfall is a large waterfall that is very beautiful. It is the largest and most beautiful waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park.
The children are playing in the water by the waterfall.
The force of the water flowing over the rocks
The Mae Ya Waterfall cascades down a steep cliff in 30 tiers, spanning a total height of over 260 meters. During the rainy season, the waterfall expands to a width of 100 meters, resembling a magnificent water curtain. The cascading water converges in a pool below, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
The water flowed steadily, revealing a distant waterfall.
Certain sections of the cliff face protrude, forming rocky shelters where tourists can take refuge from the cascading mist, resembling a pristine white curtain. This offers a unique perspective on the beauty of nature. While the pool below is accessible for swimming, today's conditions are not ideal. The swift and powerful current suggests that cautious observation is the preferred option.
During the dry season, the Mae Ya Waterfall may experience a decrease in water volume, but the waterfall remains crystal clear. The surrounding area is a lush forest with diverse vegetation. Downstream from the waterfall, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has installed a hydroelectric power plant to generate electricity using the waterfall's water. Tourists can camp at the Mae Ya Waterfall by contacting the park officials to request permission to set up tents.
We spent a long time walking around the waterfall. At first, there was no one there, but then people started to arrive. The waterfall was beautiful today, but the water was strong and flowing fast. The thing to be careful about when visiting a waterfall during the rainy season like this is flash floods, which can suddenly flow down the waterfall. Therefore, it is important to listen to the signs and the officials at this time.
We didn't spend much time at Mae Ya Waterfall, as the trail was only about a kilometer long. We strolled along, taking in the sights and enjoying the natural beauty, before arriving back at our trusty vehicle. It was time to head back to the resort.
