After exploring Taipei, Taichung is another city we visited during our trip to Taiwan.
We learned that Taichung is the birthplace of bubble tea.
Taichung is a vintage city with many photogenic spots.
Taichung is also a city with delicious food.
Knowing this, we decided to spend some time in Taichung. Here's a look at our 1-day, 1-night itinerary in Taichung.
Let's see where we went.
We began our journey by purchasing train tickets in advance. The tickets clearly indicated the departure time. We boarded the train at Taipei Main Station.
The journey took approximately 3 hours, covering a distance of 171 kilometers. We had the opportunity to take a nap during the ride.
Upon arrival, we reached Taichung Station.
Stepping out of Taichung Station, the sky was a dull white from the day we arrived until the day we left.
This was in stark contrast to Taipei, which made us feel incredibly small. 555
At that time, what we were looking for was a taxi to take us to the hotel we had booked.
There were taxis lined up waiting along the road. The taxis here are yellow.
The meter starts at 85 NT.
As usual, the taxi here uses Map for navigation, including talking to the customer through the app to make sure they understand.
But it did get me to my destination, haha.
This is our accommodation in Taichung for 1 night, called OURS HOTEL, located at 228 Fuxing Road, opposite Fengjia Market.
It is 8 kilometers away from the train station.
OURS HOTEL appears to be newly built, judging by its fresh and clean appearance.
Its location is also excellent, being close to FENGJIA NIGHT MARKET, where we plan to explore for dinner tonight.
During check-in, we encountered a group of 6-7 Thai tourists, suggesting that this accommodation is already known among Thai travelers.
OURS HOTEL's guest rooms are decorated in a modern style and come equipped with a refrigerator, air conditioning, and a hairdryer.
The rooms also feature a variety of amenities, including a separate bathroom and toilet, which is convenient for guests who are sharing a room.
The hotel also offers extra beds and comfortable bedding, ensuring a good night's sleep for all guests.
Here is the information for accommodation in Taichung, in case anyone is interested in visiting Fengjia Night Market and looking for a conveniently located place to stay.

We had one day in Taichung, and even though we only had half a day to explore, we still managed to visit a few places. We arrived by train and had to kill some time before checking into our hotel.
Rainbow Village

You can get there by bus or taxi. We took a taxi and it cost us 280NT for the 8km journey.
Welcome to Rainbow Village, another landmark in Taichung that you must check in and take photos at.
The entire village is decorated with colorful paintings and drawings that tell stories.
Most of the paintings are in red.
The story of the Rainbow Village is that it was originally a village for war veterans. The government wanted to reclaim the land, but the villagers did not want to give it up. Instead of protesting, they decided to paint their houses in bright colors and unique shapes. This attracted so much attention that the government changed its mind and decided to promote the village as a tourist destination instead. As a result, the Rainbow Village has become a popular tourist attraction, and the surrounding area has seen an increase in transportation and commerce. Local residents have also benefited from the increased tourism, as they are now able to sell souvenirs and other goods to visitors.

The novelty for us is the paintings and stories on the walls, and every day there are many tourists who come to take pictures.
Including the food carts, which we went to explore. What are they?

It resembles Chinese sausage, but we didn't buy it. We bought a drink that looked like fresh sugarcane juice in a round bottle.
To our surprise, when we pointed to the picture on the shopfront, they poured milk tea into the bottle and shook it for us.
We were confused whether we were drinking sugarcane juice or milk tea. 555
Luce Memorial Chapel

From Rainbow Village, it's a short walk or two bus rides: take bus 27 and then transfer to bus 300. The distance is about 8 kilometers.
A taxi meter will cost around 270NT.
This time, we chose to take a taxi.

This is a small chapel located within Tunghai University.
After getting off the bus, you need to walk another 500 meters. The path is lined with lush green trees and beautifully landscaped gardens.
Reading travel reviews of Taichung, everyone seems to come here, so I just followed suit. Haha.
You can see students gathered in groups on the lawn or under the shade of trees, engaging in various activities.
Couples can also be seen walking hand-in-hand, passing by constantly.
Now that we've arrived, let's decide where to go next. Let's continue looking at reviews.
Traveling to various tourist attractions in Taichung usually requires two or three bus transfers.
If you only take taxis, like we did at the beginning, it's very expensive.
So next time, we'll try taking the bus. 555
Use your Easy Card to tap on and off the bus. Just follow what others do.
If you have a specific destination in mind, use Google Maps to plan your route and know which stop to get off at.
If you have plenty of time, you can take a nap on the bus. The air conditioning is nice and cool.
Goemei Wetlands

We took a bus for 19 kilometers from downtown Taichung. Bus number 309 goes directly to Gaomei Wetlands.
The fare is 60NT per person.

Gaomei Wetlands: A Scenic Destination in Taichung
Gaomei Wetlands is a renowned landmark in Taichung, offering a captivating experience for visitors. However, the ideal time to visit is during clear, sunny days, unlike our current overcast conditions. During sunset, the wetlands are particularly stunning with breathtaking light displays. Despite the gloomy skies, we decided to embark on a leisurely stroll to soak in the atmosphere. The distance from the bus stop to the wetlands is 2 kilometers, making for a 4-kilometer round trip.
This is a simple and short sentence.
The weather is pleasantly cool in Taichung, a coastal city.
Couples and tourists can be seen cycling or jogging, taking a leisurely break.
Taichung is indeed a romantic city.

We chose to rest at the pavilion halfway, enjoying the scenery. Others continued to the end of the path, which was a muddy lane. They went down to play and catch crabs. We ordered bubble tea and waited. This time, we tried the original matcha green tea. We took the bus back to Taichung City at night. It took three buses to get back to our accommodation. We got lost, or rather, confused.

Let's check into our accommodation, freshen up, and head to the night market.
There, we can try some of the local specialties. They say it's amazing, so we have to check it out.
Fengjia Night Market
Location: https://goo.gl/maps/zN65gtFykj62
Walking to FENGJIA NIGHT MARKET, you will notice a large number of coin-operated claw machines.
There are so many that it is overwhelming, and there are multiple stalls.
Once you enter FENGJIA NIGHT MARKET, it is very crowded.
Both vendors and customers here will have Street Food, which you can eat while walking.
As for us, we went to find a restaurant to sit down and eat, which is more convenient for us. Hehe.

After having many cups of bubble tea, I decided to try a watermelon smoothie instead.
The watermelon was huge! I ordered a cup with added fresh milk for 25NT. The main reason I bought it was because the seller was so friendly.
Giant Squid is a deep-fried squid dish, with a crispy texture and seasoned with a flavorful powder.
You can choose between spicy or non-spicy options. The squid is large, about the size of your palm. This is a popular Taiwanese street food.
You can also find it in Thailand, but since we're already here, we have to try it!
Fried river prawns. We approached this stall, but after the vendor explained the dish, we decided to back away. The prawns were actually from Thailand!
Anyway, we took a picture to show you that even food from our home country is available here.
As we walked around the market, we noticed that each vendor had their own unique way of attracting customers.
They were all very good at grabbing attention.
Here's another item we encountered: mala skewers for 80NT each.
We opted for the skin-on chicken skewers, which the vendor then proceeded to flambé with a fiery flourish.
Freshly grilled and drizzled with chili and fiery mala powder, the skewers were then wrapped in paper and handed to us.
Unable to resist, we immediately took a whiff. The aroma was intoxicating, and the taste, when we finally dug in, was simply divine.
We also explored other menu items, capturing their essence in photographs to share with you.

Most of what we see is grilled food, which is more attractive. The smell is so good that it attracts customers. 555
FENGJIA NIGHT MARKET is open every day until midnight.
There are souvenir shops, clothes, bags, shoes, etc. that we have explored, but we didn't buy them because we were too lazy to carry them back to Taipei.
We'd rather shop on the last day before returning to Thailand.
OURS HOTEL where we stayed does not have breakfast, but it is not a problem for us. There is a FamilyMart near our accommodation, 100 meters away.
We have to travel back to Taipei in the morning of the next day, so we'd better find a shop near the train station.
We can take a bus or a taxi, but the bus takes a long time to pass by.
So we decided to take a taxi to Taichung Station. It's really convenient for us.
The taxi fare in Taichung is quite expensive. 555
Let's see that Taichung Station has both an old-fashioned station, which is preserved.
And a newly built station next to it to blend the past and present of Taichung.
Let's take a souvenir photo at Taichung Station. See you at Taipei Main Station with the same scorching sky as always.
