Off-duty Notes #1

Dusit Zoo

Following the news of Dusit Zoo's closure being postponed for another month, public interest in visiting the zoo has surged. This includes our restless friend, who has returned from a two-week break from her PhD studies in Japan. Her return comes with a 20-point checklist of things to do, one of which is visiting Dusit Zoo. As her unwitting companion on this checklist adventure, I was happy to join her, as I had planned to see her before she returned to Japan. This trip to Dusit Zoo brought back a flood of childhood memories, filling my heart with joy.

Many people have visited Dusit Zoo before, but this time everyone's visit is different from before. In the past, everyone came to Dusit Zoo for tourism, but this time we believe that everyone came to capture the last memories before moving to another location. We are similar to other people, when our friends invited us, we thought, "Let's go, they're going to move anyway." And then we arrived... We entered from the Ratchawithi Road side. When we arrived, we found a large archway that said "Dusit Zoo". The entrance fee for adults is 100 Thai baht.

We don't remember what Dusit Zoo was like in our memory 23 years ago, but we are quite sure that it has changed a lot. There is a new water park zone added. When we entered, we found the African animal zone, where the stars were a pair of giraffes living with zebras. Many people tried to take selfies with the giraffes, but it was very difficult. This campaign requires luck. Another highlight that everyone came to do and take pictures of was "duck boat riding". : )

The Enduring Charm of Mae Mali

The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly Mae Mali, the beloved hippopotamus matriarch. Her gentle nature and playful spirit instantly captivated us, reminding us of a hippo we had photographed years ago. Little did we know, that hippo was none other than Mae Mali herself!

We were struck by her vitality and vibrancy, which left a lasting impression on us for over two decades. Today, at the age of 53, Mae Mali exudes an even greater sense of kindness and wisdom. Her presence is truly heartwarming.

We look forward to visiting Mae Mali in her new home and witnessing her continued reign as the queen of the hippos.
