A short drive from the radar station, we returned to Ang Ka, also known as Ang Ka Luang, a nature trail through a rainforest or cloud forest, and the Shrine of Krom Kiat. Ang Ka is a short nature trail, taking only 30-40 minutes to walk. There are two nature trails in Doi Inthanon National Park: Ang Ka and Kew Mae Pan. Kew Mae Pan is closed until the end of October this year.
“Doi Ang Ka” or “Doi Inthanon”... is the highest mountain in Thailand, located in the Thanon Thong Chai Range. Its highest peak, “Doi Ang Ka”, stands at 2,565 meters above sea level. The summit features a year-round spring that feeds various streams and waterfalls, including Mae Pan Waterfall, Mae Ya Waterfall, and Mae Klang Waterfall.
"Ang Ka": A Natural Wonder Atop Doi Inthanon
Ang Ka, a ten-rai natural pool nestled atop Doi Inthanon, boasts year-round water. The origins of its name remain shrouded in mystery, with three prevailing theories:

The Ang Ka ecosystem is unique due to its high altitude (over 2,500 meters above sea level), year-round flooding, persistent fog, average temperature of 12 degrees Celsius, and high humidity. This environment supports rare plant species such as ข้าวตอกฤาษี and กุหลาบพันปี. The dense vegetation, including mosses and ferns, covers the branches of large trees, leaving almost no empty space.
This circular trail, with a detour to the Krom Kiat Shrine, covers approximately 300-400 meters. Designed by Canadian zoologist and volunteer Michael McMillan Waltz, the trail is easy to navigate and suitable for all fitness levels. Upon entering the Ang Ka area, one is immediately struck by the humidity and lushness of the environment, a veritable cloud-making machine aptly nicknamed the "Cloud Forest." Water droplets condense and distill from the trees, creating a pervasive mist that may necessitate the use of raincoats.

The Shrine of Krom Kiat is located at a fork in the path behind the main trail. To reach it, visitors must retrace their steps up the path and then continue along the designated nature trail to Ang Ka Reservoir.

The "Shrine of Krom Kiat" is located in Doi Inthanon National Park. It was built as a memorial to Air Chief Marshal Kiat Mangkalapruk, the leader of the survey team for the establishment of the Doi Inthanon Control and Reporting Center. He died along with Mr. Niphon Boontrarom, the head of Doi Inthanon National Park, on May 29, 1971.
Forty years ago, the two individuals were on a helicopter to survey the location of the Doi Inthanon control center and report. Shortly after completing their mission, the engine suddenly malfunctioned, causing an accident in mid-air. The helicopter crashed into the area where the current Krati Shrine is located, near Ang Ka and the Doi Inthanon Bird Watching Point. The tragedy brought sadness to the entire Thai nation.
