Doi Mon Jong: A Lush Wilderness Awaits

Doi Mon Jong, nestled within the Omkoi Wildlife Sanctuary in Omkoi District, Chiang Mai Province, is a captivating landscape of mountains, valleys, and plains. This pristine forest, teeming with diverse wildlife, serves as a vital source of water for the region.

The highest peak, Yod Huasingh, reaches an impressive 1,949 meters above sea level, ranking among Thailand's top ten mountains. This majestic elevation has drawn countless adventurers seeking to conquer its slopes and explore the natural wonders along the challenging trails leading to Yod Huasingh's summit.

Affectionately dubbed the "Hipster Mountain," Doi Mon Jong has become a popular destination for young travelers, drawn by its allure and the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding wilderness.

This trip, I joined "Boy" from the Uptomego page "Go Travel Everywhere" for a 2-day, 1-night adventure.

A total of 3 vans departed from Bangkok and headed to the Ban Mu Ser Community Service Center in Pa Kham Village, Omkoi District, Chiang Mai Province.

The route from Hod District to Omkoi District is a two-lane road with curves, ascents, descents, and potholes, requiring extra caution.

After preparing our belongings and hiring porters, we continued our journey by 4x4 vehicle from the Ban Mu Ser Community Service Center to the starting point of the trek. The unpaved road features ascents and descents, and there is a checkpoint for the Omkoi Wildlife Sanctuary where entrance fees are collected:

  • Children: 10 Baht
  • Adults: 20 Baht
  • Foreign children: 100 Baht
  • Foreign adults: 200 Baht

The camping fee is 50 Baht per tent.

The journey continues with a one-hour drive to the starting point of the trek. Lunch will be served before the hike, so be sure to pack enough water, electrolyte supplements, candy, and any other refreshments you desire. With everyone energized and ready, the adventure begins with smiles and anticipation.

Life jackets are readily available for use. Feel free to take one if needed. Let's get going! We'll get there eventually, even if we have to complain along the way.

From the starting point to the campsite, the distance is approximately 4 km and takes about 3-4 hours, passing through challenging slopes and various resting points.

  • Pine Forest Hill
  • Hoy Chan Viewpoint
  • Scenic viewpoint for couples

- Phuhin Chor

  • Two Khun Waterfalls Plaza

- Hip Hob Hill

  • Elephant Golf Course

Strolling through the shady forest, admiring the birds and trees, brings a cool and comfortable feeling. In some sections, the open grasslands bathed in sunlight can get a bit warm, but it's not overly challenging. Young people tend to enjoy this type of hike.

"Phu Hin Chor" is a resting point about halfway through the journey, and there are rocks to climb for amazing photos that you shouldn't miss.

The trail then meanders through the cool shade of trees, continuing along the shoulder of the mountain with an easy, non-steep incline.

Follow the porter and you won't get lost. The path is quite clear.

The journey offers endless opportunities for sightseeing, photography, and entertainment. During the early November season, the lush greenery is at its most vibrant, creating a refreshing and captivating experience.

After reaching Hip Hop Hill (formerly known as Dog Panting Hill), we took a moment to catch our breath and have a drink of water before tackling the final, grueling climb.

Once you pass the Hip Hop Hill, you will be greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view.

Continuing on a little further, you will reach the Chang Golf Course clearing (this must be where the baby elephants play golf!). The wide, open green grassland is quite beautiful. Those who can withstand the sun can take some photos before heading into the forest campsite.

They say this place is a minimalist wonderland, where you'll see tiny people walking in the distance along the paths.

The campsite is divided into two areas: the upper area (turn left) and the lower area (turn right). Our large group of over 30 people chose to set up camp in the lower area, which is close to the water source and has restrooms.

Looking up at the sky during a late-night bathroom break, I saw a million stars. If you're scared, bring a friend along! ;)

After setting up our tents and storing our belongings, we took a break to rest and then continued our journey. For those who still had energy, we continued exploring, while those who were tired could rest and join us in the morning. Our next destination was the unmissable Lion's Head Peak, a 360-degree viewpoint and the highest point of Doi Mon Jong, standing at an impressive 1949 meters above sea level, ranking among the top 10 highest peaks in Thailand.

The distance from Chang Golf Course to Pha Hua Sing is approximately 2 km. Walk along the ridge (slippery!) and there are some ups and downs to get your heart rate up. Don't forget your flashlight and a jacket.

During January and February, the meadows on this mountain turn a golden yellow. However, during November, the beginning of the tourist season at Doi Mon Jong, the scenery is still lush and green. The choice is yours.

There it is, Pha Hua Singh, the highest point of Doi Mon Jong. Wow, it's quite high.

Today is a lucky day. The sky is clear and the sun is shining. The sunset must be beautiful. Let's keep walking.

The late afternoon sun began to cast a golden hue, urging us to quicken our pace to catch the fading light. We had lingered too long, captivated by the scenery and our incessant picture-taking.

Upon reaching the peak of the lion's head, we are presented with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view, captivating the hearts of many.

They say that the peak of the mountain is the Monkey's Head. If I had more time, I would walk to the top. But I don't have enough time, and I'm starting to get tired. I'll just enjoy the sunset from the Lion's Head peak.

Looking back at the path we walked from the campsite and the elephant golf course.

The sunlight bathes the mountains, creating a breathtaking scene.

We eagerly await the golden light, sitting to watch the sunset.

Regardless of who we are, a simple smile can forge a beautiful friendship.

Just past the Pha Huasingh cliff, there is a scenic viewpoint and a great spot for photos. It's a steep climb, so be prepared for a challenge. Not many people venture down here.

Set up the camera, stand cool for 10 seconds, and run barely in time. Haha, tomorrow morning we will come again to see the sea of fog, right?

As the sun sets, we must return to the campsite promptly. Darkness presents safety hazards, and the roads become slippery. Remember to bring a flashlight.

Nestled amidst the lush greenery, the campsite boasts the presence of dedicated forest rangers. These vigilant individuals maintain a watchful eye over the area, ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors. With meticulous care, they embark on regular patrols, meticulously counting the number of campers to guarantee that everyone has safely returned to the designated campsite. Their unwavering commitment fosters a sense of安心 and warmth, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who venture into this idyllic haven.

Capturing the beautiful light on my walk back home.

Suddenly, wisps of mist began to rise, making one wonder how beautiful it would be if it turned into a sea of fog filling the valley.

Upon reaching the campsite, we freshened up, changed our clothes, and gathered together to enjoy a meal and conversation. We got to know each other, sharing stories of our journeys before retiring for the night. We had a 3:00 AM appointment to watch the stars, as we were told there would be a meteor shower (it would surely rain like rain).

In reality, it took a long time for each meteor to fall. We craned our necks until they ached, but we couldn't capture them in time. Haha, the stars tricked us. But it didn't matter. Just seeing the open sky and a million stars amidst the gentle cold wind brought us joy.

Simple and Short

Capture stunning stars with ease! Follow these steps:

  • Set your ISO to 1600-3200.
  • Use the lowest possible f-stop (aperture) on your lens. (For example, I used a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.)
  • Set the shutter speed to 25-30 seconds.
  • Get ready and capture the stars!

Enjoy the dazzling results!

At 5:00 AM, we had an appointment to watch the sea of fog and sunrise at Pha Hua Singh (wow, the distance is not short, round trip 2 rounds is almost 8 km, right?). Today the light is very beautiful. I secretly took pictures while walking.

Engrossed in taking photos, I'm afraid I won't reach the top of Phasing in time to capture the beautiful light.

Today, we were rewarded with a sea of mist, a sight for weary travelers. Although not as vast as we had hoped, the atmosphere, stunning views, and fresh air brought smiles to everyone's faces, filling this weekend with joy.

I walked past Pha Huasingh to take another picture at the same spot, the one with the protruding cliff. Turning back, I saw many friends at Pha Huasingh.

Continue to explore and zoom in on the fog.

And then the big sun rose as scheduled.

The golden light of the sun shone across the entire area.

We're back at the same spot, setting up the camera with a 10-second timer before sprinting into the frame like marathon runners. Phew, that was a close one! It took a lot of effort to get this shot.

It's a weekend, another happy journey for Ai Kuem.

Dew on the grass, ordinary but I like it a lot.

Relax and enjoy the fresh air to relieve fatigue. Take some cool and stylish photos to show off to your friends and prove that you are the conqueror of Mon Jong Peak.

Wildflowers are blooming beautifully.

The sun began to shine brightly, and the weather became hot. We walked back, enjoying the mist along the way. It was an amazing experience.

Despite the lack of dense fog, we managed to zoom in and capture some close-up shots. Haha!

The path we are walking on offers stunning views from the cliff edge. Please be careful, as the road is very slippery.

Forests are life.

Arriving at the Chang Golf Course, we met Boy, who came out to check on the members. "Haha, you guys have been gone for a long time," he said. "The view is beautiful, isn't it?"

It's time to break camp, eat, and throw our backpacks on our backs. We'll refuel with coffee and say goodbye to Doi Mon Jong.

After taking a group photo at the Chang Golf Course lawn, we quickly retreated from the sun and walked down the "Dog Panting Hill" or "Hip Panting Hill." The return trip was easy and relaxed, taking about 1 to 1.30 hours to reach our destination.

We came up in a hip-hop style, and we'll go down in the same way.

We were the first to arrive at our destination. Peter, the dog, greeted us upon our arrival. (We named him ourselves.)

The first group of 12 people arrived and boarded the vehicle to return home to shower and change clothes.

Have lunch and drink something cold.

Relax and unwind.

After bidding farewell to the trip, we embarked on our journey back to Bangkok. The distance was considerable, and it was around three in the morning when we finally arrived in the capital.

This trip concluded successfully, fostering new friendships among office workers from diverse backgrounds and professions. It was a pleasure meeting everyone (apologies for not remembering all names).

Thank you to Boy and the staff team from the Uptomego "I Travel Everywhere" page, and the porters from the Musoe village, who took great care of us and brought us to visit such beautiful and memorable places.

Easy to walk around, the atmosphere and air are super good. I will be back again, see you again in the winter, golden meadow.
