**Hakodate**, a vibrant city brimming with charm, situated on the island of Hokkaido.

When discussing Hokkaido, many people only think of popular cities like Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, or the ski resort town of Niseko.

Hakodate, a major city located at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, is another must-visit destination for a variety of reasons.

While the journey to Hakodate from Sapporo may be lengthy, the experience is unforgettable and well worth the time invested.

I had the opportunity to visit Hakodate two years ago, but I haven't had the chance to compile the information for a review...

However, after watching the movie "Fan Day… Girlfriend for a Day," I was impressed by the many scenes filmed in this city, all of which were memorable.

This sparked the inspiration to gather those memories and share the story with friends through this post…

Perhaps this information will be of some use to those planning a trip to Hakodate.

During my trip to Hakodate, I spent two days and one night there.

Our trip was by car, so it was quite comfortable.

Stop by any place you like, no need to rush to catch the train on time.

This post will gather Hakodate's highlights in our style for you to enjoy.

Our first destination in Hakodate is Cape Tachimachi.

This cape is located at the southernmost point of Hakodate City on the island of Hokkaido.

This is the most beautiful viewpoint of the Tsugaru Strait, where you can also see the long stretch of the Omorihama rocky cliffs.

This area features benches for relaxation and a small food stall. During my visit, I tried the large skewered grilled oysters, which were a highlight.

Very fresh and delicious. You must try it. There are seats to eat by the fruit, the wind blows in your face, it's so cool.

How about that? Oysters are oysters, really full-bodied!!! The second destination is Mt. Hakodate (Hakodateyama).

Mount Hakodate is a renowned landmark in Hakodate, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. To reach the summit, visitors can take the Mount Hakodate Ropeway, a scenic cable car ride that takes approximately 3 minutes. The round-trip fare is 1,280 yen per person.

This viewpoint is ranked among the top 3 most beautiful views in Japan (the other two are Mount Inasa in Nagasaki and Mount Rokko in Kobe).

From this vantage point, we can see the city of Hakodate nestled below, embraced by the curves of the ocean on both sides (reminiscent of the parting sea!).

This passage recommends visiting in the late afternoon or early evening and staying until after sunset. This is because both sunrise and sunset offer unique and breathtaking views. Rest assured, the beauty of both times of day is unparalleled.

Please note that the weather on the top is quite cold and windy. Don't forget to wear warm clothes.

The third destination is Hakodate Morning Market Square.

This will be a hub for fresh seafood with over 300 shops.

Just like our local fresh markets, but with a focus on seafood and incredibly clean.

This market opens from early morning. It is recommended to come early in the morning.

The market will be divided into two zones.

The first zone is for fresh food to buy and cook at home. But the highlight of this market is the squid pond in the middle, where you can catch your own squid and have the vendor chop it up for you to eat fresh, wriggling in every part. It doesn't get any fresher than this... I had to try it, of course.

In my opinion, one serving is best shared between two people. It can be a bit too rich for one person to enjoy alone.

And this is the work...one squid, splattered.

The other zone is the **Donburi Yokocho** restaurant zone, which focuses on rice bowls with various toppings.

Inexpensive compared to what you see and get to eat!

The highlight is the 5-colored rice topped with raw fish, featuring 5 different colors. (Count them yourself to see if there are really 5 colors!)

The simplest and most straightforward way to order food is to take a picture of the sample menu displayed at the restaurant and show it to the staff.

This market offers a wide variety of fresh seafood, including shrimp, shellfish, crab, and fish. They even have fresh melons available for purchase and immediate consumption.

Destination 4: Take a leisurely stroll around the Bay Area

The Bay Area is located next to Hakodate Port. This area has been transformed into a place for relaxation, shopping for handicrafts and souvenirs, and restaurants. The bay offers beautiful views with many ships lined up.

This area's buildings were renovated from centuries-old warehouses, making the Red-Brick Warehouse a prominent Hakodate landmark.

For those with a sweet tooth, two must-try pastry shops are Pastry Snaffle's and Petite Merveille.

Oh, I forgot to mention that there are bicycles available for rent here so you can enjoy a leisurely ride.

The fifth stop is to try the famous Lucky Pierrot hamburger.

A must-try in Hakodate is the city's famous hamburger.

Widely considered the top burger joint in Hakodate, Lucky Pierrot boasts multiple locations, including Bay Area and JR Hakodate Station.

The menu at this restaurant doesn't just offer delicious hamburgers. The curry rice menu is equally delicious, as are the spaghetti and ice cream options. There's something for everyone.

The decor of this restaurant is inspired by the circus, with a clown logo and vibrant colors that are sure to draw you in.

The food is reasonably priced, but be prepared to wait in line as the restaurant is very popular.

The shop is open from 10 am to midnight. You can stop by for a meal until bedtime.

This bowl is huge!

Let's move on to another great place, the Goryokaku Fort, which is a must-see.
However, when I went there, I had a slight problem with my camera, so I didn't take many pictures (only these 2).
The pictures didn't turn out as I had hoped, haha.
A quick snapshot from the Adjoining Goryokaku Tower Observatory to show the panoramic view of the star-shaped Goryokaku Fort.
The entrance fee to the observation tower is 840 yen.
Actually, if it were during the snowy winter or the cherry blossom season, it would be even more beautiful...

The final destination, Onuma Park, offers stunning natural beauty.

This is a place you can visit if you have extra time, as it is located outside of Hakodate to the north.

If you take the train, get off at Onuma Koen. It takes about half an hour.

This will be a national park for relaxation. We can rent bicycles to ride around, or we can take a boat to enjoy the view.

At this park, we can see Mt. Komagatake, an active volcano, reflected in the waters of Lake Konuma.

Note: There are many flavors of ice cream to choose from here. I love it!
