Experience the mist, admire the wildflowers, and conquer the peak of Phu Langka Mountain in Phayao Province.

Phu Langka, known as "Finjabe" in the Mien language, means "Mountain of the Gods".

Legends abound about the mountain gods in this land.

According to local beliefs, the mountain is protected by deities.

It is said that centuries ago, the mountain was abundant with fruits.

Villagers were allowed to pick fruits but forbidden from taking them down from the mountain.

One day, a villager picked fruits and tried to bring them back.

No matter how hard he tried, he could not find his way out of the forest and disappeared.

This story has been passed down through generations.

Phulangka: A Majestic Peak in Northern Thailand

Phulangka, a breathtaking mountain peak towering at 1,720 meters above sea level, reigns supreme as the highest point in the Thai-Laotian border's Sankamphaeng mountain range. Encompassing an area of approximately 7,800 rai, this natural wonder resides within the Pha Chang sub-district of Pong District, Phayao Province.

Characterized by its lush montane rainforest, Phulangka serves as the origin of the Yom River, nurturing a diverse ecosystem. Its verdant slopes are adorned with towering trees, including ancient pines, showcasing the remarkable biodiversity of this pristine environment. The mountain's untouched beauty and ecological significance underscore its status as a haven for nature enthusiasts and conservationists alike.

My journey began unexpectedly, with no preconceived notions of what I would encounter. There was little information available online about the location I was visiting, perhaps because it was not yet widely known among tourists. Information about "Phu Langka Forest Park" in Phayao Province was scarce. However, upon my arrival, I found myself compelled to return for a second visit. Perhaps it was because I had become enamored with the atmosphere of this mountain range.

In my memory, Phu Langka National Park is a place that is not crowded with tourists. We can drive up to a certain level, but if we want to walk up to Phu Langka, we have to rent a pickup truck from the local villagers, which the park has prepared. We will ride the truck up the mountain for a while, and then we will reach the point where we have to start walking.

The air here is rather cold, and the mountains stretch as far as the eye can see. I can't take my eyes off these mountains. The distance I've walked hasn't affected my fatigue. The dry and cold air makes me feel comfortable.

This is my second visit to Phu Langka. The first time I came, I couldn't experience the true essence of Phu Langka. The weather was overcast, with only clouds and mist floating around. The atmosphere was gray from early morning until almost noon.

The hidden beauty of this place draws me back time and time again. I come with the hope of seeing the view on a clear day, with mist clinging to the natural landscape. My reunion with my companions and beloved younger sibling begins once more. One travels from Bangkok with me, while the other comes from Chiang Mai. We meet at the starting point of the trek to Phu Langka, as usual. My younger sibling from Chiang Mai arrives early in the morning, waiting for the sun to rise over the mountain range. My friend and I arrive at the meeting point when the sky is already bright. And then, we missed the first light of that day.

This hiking trail leads us along the ridge, following the path with occasional directional signs. The natural beauty of the ridge varies from point to point. Some sections feature clusters of small and large pine trees swaying gracefully in the cold wind. Others showcase rock formations, where nature has sculpted a diverse array of stunning rock shapes. While some spots offer breathtaking views, they also pose potential dangers. When hiking or taking photos, we must exercise caution and respect for nature. The most scenic spot, known locally as "Angel Rock," is a steep cliff with a deep drop-off, devoid of any barriers.

This area boasts a diverse array of wildflowers that thrive along the mountain ridges. Our hiking trail led us to discover unique blooms that are endemic to this mountain or found only in high-altitude regions. I find immense joy in observing the abundance of wildflowers and grasses that adorn the mountain slopes. To me, they represent the vibrant colors of nature, a harmonious complement to the ruggedness of the mountains. The presence of these delicate flowers softens the harshness of the terrain, adding a touch of color and vibrancy. It is a poignant reminder that even within the strength and resilience of life, there is always a gentle and tender side that exists in harmony.

On this clear-sky day, Phu Langka captivated me with its stunning beauty. Although I missed the opportunity to witness the sunrise or the sea of mist that I had yet to see from this place, the atmosphere and our journey made everything memorable. We savored every moment, allowing everything to unfold at its own pace, without rushing to capture the scenery.

I don't know if I'll ever be back here, but if the opportunity arises, I won't let it slip away. This place, full of memories that we gradually built each year during the winter season, is called "Phu Langka Forest Park." In the future, it may be renamed "Phu Langka National Park." However, the reason why the nature here is still pristine is because of the care of the park officials and the villagers, the hill tribe people, who have helped to preserve it. It is also the duty of tourists like us to help take care of and preserve nature when we travel to such places. "When we take care of the forest, it will take care of us." I believe that.
