On the morning of January 18, 2018, after breakfast, we departed from Pai District, Mae Hong Son Province, and headed towards Pang Ma Pha District. Our destination was Tham Lod Cave, which took approximately one hour to reach. The route to Mae Hong Son is a winding mountain road, typical of the region known for its numerous sharp curves and steep inclines. Despite the challenging terrain, the journey was filled with breathtaking views. Along the way, we passed the Doi Kiew Lom viewpoint, a popular spot for tourists to capture stunning vistas of mountains and wildflowers. Local vendors also offered simple food and refreshments to visitors.

After enjoying the panoramic view at Doi King Lom, we continued driving, admiring the winding roads. Before reaching Pang Ma Pha Market, we encountered a right turn leading to Tham Lod Cave. The drive to the cave was approximately 20 kilometers on a moderately sized road with clear signage, eliminating any concerns about getting lost. Upon arrival at Tham Lod Cave, we found convenient and ample parking, alleviating any parking anxieties.

The cave exploration service includes a guide, for which a fee is required. There are two options: walking through the cave or taking a bamboo raft ride. The raft ride is considered the highlight of the trip and costs 300 baht for two people per group. After paying, a guide will lead you to the cave entrance, which takes about 10 minutes to walk to.

Entrance to the cave

The cave is incredibly beautiful, but it is also very dark. The guide will provide lanterns to help you navigate. Once you have finished exploring the cave, you will board a raft. The cave is very spacious, and the raft will be waiting for you inside. As you float along, you will be accompanied by a multitude of fish swimming alongside you. It is a truly breathtaking experience.

It's time to board the raft and explore the cave.

Paddling a raft to the other side of the cave mouth, you will be greeted by a breathtaking view. At the mouth of this cave lies the Phi Man Cave, which requires disembarking from the raft and hiking a short distance. Phi Man Cave served as a burial site for ancient cavemen. Tree trunks were hollowed out to create a boat-like structure, and the bodies of the ancients were placed inside and transported to the cave without being cremated. Ordinary people were laid to rest on the lower levels of the cave, while tribal chiefs were placed on the highest level. The heads of the chiefs were adorned with crown-like features.

Welcomes tourists back

And this is another tourist destination in Thailand that I recommend you must visit.
