Limited time, but I still wanted to visit the Old Town of Nan. This charming small city boasts a distinct culture and a delightful atmosphere. It was love at first sight, leaving a lasting impression on my heart.
My first trip to Nan wasn't for leisure, but for business. However, since I was already there, I had to make a few stops. My first stop was to pay respects at the Phra That Chae Haeng, a revered temple over 600 years old and a must-visit for anyone visiting Nan. It's located about 3 kilometers from the city center.
This royal temple serves as a monument to the historical love and connection between the cities of Nan and Sukhothai. It is also the designated temple for those born in the year of the rabbit.
We then chose to visit Phra That Khao Noi to enjoy the city view first, so that we could then wander around the city and walk the walking street with a light and carefree heart.
The highlight that makes this place a must-go destination in Nan is the Phra Phuttha Maha Udom Mongkhon Nanaburi Si Nan statue, which stands alongside a view of Nan city on Doi Khao Noi. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side today. It rained while we were going up to the temple, making the city view less clear.
After paying respects at the Khao Noi Temple and capturing stunning city views, we hurried back to Nan city to collect our belongings at our accommodation. This time, we opted to stay at Khum Muang Mint, which is conveniently located within walking distance of the Walking Street Market, Phumin Temple, Phra That Chang Kham Worawihan Temple, Ming Muang Temple, and the Nan National Museum.
For those who prefer not to walk, the accommodation offers bicycles for rent to explore the city.
The accommodation boasts a vintage ambiance, featuring a beautifully renovated two-story colonial-style Thai house that retains its old-world charm. Booking platforms like Agoda and Booking.com may offer rates as low as 800 baht, including breakfast. The friendly staff provides excellent recommendations for accommodations and nearby attractions.
The room is well-organized with a designated area for relaxation. It is decorated with vintage items that exude elegance. Free Wi-Fi is available. The bathroom is clean and well-equipped.
The ground floor also has a chill-out area in the garden. Let's go! After we've packed our things, we'll be on our way!
We left the alley and went to Wat Phra That Chang Kham.
Next, we crossed over to take photos at the frangipani arch in front of the Nan National Museum. Whether you visit during the leafless season or when the flowers are in bloom, the scenery is breathtaking.
After taking photos, we walked across to Wat Phumin.
The temple's most notable feature is the "Phra Ubosot Chaturamuk," a unique architectural marvel that combines a chapel, a hall, and a stupa into a single structure. Inside, four principal Buddha images in the Marawijai posture face the four cardinal directions, each positioned on a pedestal.
According to legend, when praying to the Four Faces Buddha, one should observe the faces of the four cardinal directions. Only one face will appear more benevolent than the other three. It is believed that praying to this specific face will grant one's wishes.
One of the most striking features of this temple is the exceptional murals. Among the most notable is the world-famous "Whispering Mural," also known as the "Grandfather and Grandmother Mural." This mural depicts a man and a woman from the ancient Tai Lue ethnic group engaged in a whispered conversation.
This is a poem in the northern Thai language (Kham Mueang) written for this image.
"I love you, my little sister, but if you put me in the water, I'll be cold."
The jackfruit is used to make a refreshing drink.
The mist descends, concealing the stars.
Bring it to the palace.
The key has been inserted and the car is ready to be driven.
And so I keep it in my heart, this year's love.
Make it happen, come on, come on.
In the dead of night, I awoke with a start, my heart pounding in my chest.
"My love for you, I cannot entrust to the water, for fear of the cold. I cannot entrust it to the open sky, for fear of the clouds obscuring it. If I keep it in the palace, the king will find it and take it away. Therefore, I entrust it to my heart, where it will sing and whisper of you, whether I am asleep or awake."

After capturing the surrounding atmosphere of the temple, we stopped by the Amazon coffee shop next to Phumin Temple to relax while waiting for the shops in the walking street market to set up. The rain clouds seemed to be gathering, so we decided to chill out here for a while.
Within the Amazon store's grounds, a 104-year-old antique wooden house stands (according to the security guard on duty). The front yard is beautifully landscaped with grass and frangipani trees. Do not enter the house, as it is not permitted. However, you can take photos from the edge of the fence.
As dusk settles, it's time to embark on a culinary adventure through the bustling night market. Northern Thai delicacies such as Aom, Nam Ngiao, and Khao Soi abound, while other dishes like Yum Khao Soi and various snacks are available at affordable prices.
After a delightful stroll and a satisfying meal, we returned to the hotel to freshen up before embarking on our return journey to Bangkok the next morning.
Before departing, we woke up to enjoy breakfast prepared by the training center. The spread included rice porridge, salad, American breakfast items, bread, tea, coffee, and fruit juice, available from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
For those who are visiting Nan and are looking for accommodation, we highly recommend this place. It's fantastic! It's only 5 minutes away from Nan Bus Terminal, making it very convenient.
Despite the 9-10 hour drive back to Bangkok, my heart remains in Nan. I'm already planning my return trip for another adventure.
